Wolfgang Van Halen recently opened up on the WTF with Marc Maron podcast about the criticism he faced after stepping in as Van Halen’s bassist, replacing longtime member Michael Anthony. Reflecting on his experience, Wolfgang shared how the transition impacted him personally, especially as he worked closely with his late father, Eddie Van Halen.
“I was just having a great time enjoying my newly sober dad, jamming with my family, and living in the moment,” Wolfgang said. “It was such a happy, joyous experience. But once it became public, I started to understand why some people might be upset or critical of me.”
When asked if the backlash was more about Michael Anthony’s departure than his own role in the band, Wolfgang didn’t shy away from the issue. “Yeah, it was really about that. But honestly, that was between my dad and Michael,” he said. “My focus was being there for my dad, helping him stay on the sober path, and keeping things moving forward. That’s all I ever wanted to do.”
Wolfgang’s honesty highlights the personal challenges of joining a legendary band while navigating fan expectations and family priorities. His story reminds us that sometimes, the music is only part of the journey.
