The Far Right is advancing and the ascent of J.D. Vance shows that the “New Right “ faction of the Republican Party has been integrated more fully into the party. This faction strives to make appeals to the working class through cynical outreach to unions, economic protectionism, and a strong anti-immigrant nativism. The New Right grew out of the decadence of neoliberalism and is a reactionary response to its failures, seeking to turn legitimate anger at the neoliberal era into the fuel for a resurgence of an authoritarian far-right that offers nothing but betrayals and attacks for the working class and oppressed. The Far Right is no longer a marginal wing of U.S. politics. No matter who wins the elections in November, the multi-racial, multi-gender working class and youth movement must unite and take the fight against the Far Right into their own hands — fighting against every advance, attack, and against the very system that produced it.

The Venezuelan Right is self-servingly denouncing the regime as a “communist dictatorship.” It does so to push a right-wing agenda of privatization and subordination to financial capital and to alienate the Venezuelan working class from “communism.” There is no communism in Venezuela and Maduro’s so-called “socialist” government is the representative of an authoritarian and capitalist regime.

In the Venezuelan elections, the working class had no candidate. Neither the pro-U.S. right nor Maduro’s bourgeois nationalism represented a political program in the interest of the workers and oppressed.

Joe Biden stepped down and we are in the midst of a wave of support for Kamala Harris. We are also in the midst of an ascendant far right led by Trump and JD Vance. This far right wants to institute mass deportations, attacks on reproductive and trans rights, increase police budgets, attack workers’ rights, continue and escalate the genocide and cut taxes for the wealthy.

Voting Harris won’t stop the far right. The Biden-Harris administration has attacked working class and oppressed people all over the world.

To fight the right, we will need to mobilize as workers and students, organized democratically in our workplaces and universities. We must mobilize our unions and student and community organizations, united as one fist against the far right, to stop the genocide and more.

And we must build a political alternative: an independent, internationalist, working-class political party to fight capitalism.

If you agree with these ideas, we invite you to get to know Left Voice.

Left Voice is part of an international project: in 14 countries: our groups put forward revolutionary socialist politics, participate in class struggle, and fight for a socialist society.

As Left Voice, we want to help in the process of building the party we need. Join us. Sign up in bio, or DM us.

07/28/2024

In recent years, Amazon has exemplified the relentless pursuit of profit maximization, using cutting-edge technology to streamline operations while exploiting a nonunionized workforce. This model has allowed Amazon to amass significant wealth and power on the backs of its workforce. The company has become a focal point for unionization efforts, as reaching a first collective bargaining agreement with Amazon would not only transform the working conditions for its over 1 million employees, but also challenge this hyperexploitative framework — having implications for the logistics industry and the working class as a whole.

Among the various sectors attempting to unionize Amazon workers, the Amazon Labor Union (ALU), which successfully established the first union at Amazon in 2022, has made a significant move by affiliating with the Teamsters union, which represents 1.3 million workers, most of them related to the logistics and freight industry.

Although Amazon workers (and logistics workers generally) occupy a key strategic position, this does not automatically mean greater power vis-a-vis the company. In order to make use of this advantage, it is necessary, first of all, to go beyond the methods of “traditional unionism” or the old union bureaucracies, to recover combative forms of struggle, to unite the demands of permanent and temporary workers, native-born and migrant workers, warehouse workers and transport workers, to be able to articulate a powerful force that truly challenge the company.

Sonya Massey was a 36 year old Black woman murdered by the police in her own home in Springfield, IL. Body camera footage released this week show that Massey called the police asking for help. Instead, she was murdered by those same cops who entered her home. The police robbed Massey’s two children of their mother.

Massey is one of many Black people who the police have murdered in their own homes: Breonna Taylor, Atatiana Jefferson, Roger Fortson… there are too many names.

Massey was a descendant of William Donnegan, a Black man who was lynched by a white mob in 1908. Massey was taken to and died in the same hospital where her ancestor died. “The more things change, the more they stay the same,” one of her family members said.

From slave-catchers and white mobs to the current police system, anti-Black racism is written into the very DNA of the police. That is why we fight to abolish the police and this whole racist capitalist system.

Both capitalist parties have increased police budgets while police continue to kill in record numbers. The Republicans are running on “law and order” and promoting racist lies about “dangerous cities.”

In a desperate attempt to co-opt the BLM movement, the Democrats kneeled in Kente cloth. But they support and defend police, including top cop Kamala Harris. Both Republicans and Democrats are enemies of all oppressed and working class people.

Mobilizing in the streets and workplaces against racism, police killings are necessary to stop the cops and the capitalists they defend.

Sonya Massey should still be alive.

07/24/2024

We have to be clear: Teamsters president Sean O’Brien’s appearance at the RNC is a scandal. While trying to position himself as independent from both parties, his appearance was far from neutral. O’Brien did not delineate himself at all from the reactionary politics that dominated the convention. He even called Trump “one tough SOB.”

He tried to frame his appearance as proof of his “independence” from either major party by saying that Teamsters “are not beholden to anyone and to any party,” in reality, it served to give working-class cover to the GOP, whose actual political program has nothing in common with O’Brien’s anti-corporate, anti-elite (while chauvinistic) speech.

Trump is a billionaire who made a fortune from expanding his family-owned real estate development business, while Vance made his millions from corporate law and venture capitalism. While they (correctly, on the surface) lambast big corporations and politicians for being in the pockets of elites, they are in the very same pockets — and are the elites themselves.

For O’Brien, the working class doesn’t need to build its own party, and can instead stay “independent” by negotiating with both political parties about particular labor issues while ignoring their views and policies as a whole. His false version of class independence means teasing the two parties that have been the architects of the inequity and deterioration of working-class living conditions.

For us, there is a different alternative: to be truly independent from the Democrats and the Republicans, and from the ruling class, which is served by all capitalist political parties. This alternative requires advancing as a class-independent political subject that can command our own political destiny outside of — and in direct confrontation with — the capitalist parties.

Biden’s decision to drop out of the presidential race and endorse Kamala Harris, along with the strengthening of the GOP following the Republican National Convention, has boosted the Democrats’ electoral prospects. But neither Trump nor Harris represent a progressive alternative for the working class and oppressed.

The future of class struggle, the defeat of the Far Right, and the emergence of a working-class political organization lies in the new labor movement, the movement in solidarity for Palestine, the new student movement, the youth that fights against climate change, for trans and LGBTQ+ rights, and against imperialism.

07/23/2024

The Republican National Convention represented a party more unified than they have been in a long time. This sense of party unity is particularly notable because it is a unity that is solidified behind Trump as a victor who has worked to remake the party in his own image. Gone are the guardrails against Trump that Republican leaders tried to erect in 2016 and during his presidency. Now Trump stands triumphant, strengthened, and, as one RNC speaker called him, the “Founding Father of the America First movement.”

Trump chose his heir, Vance, a soldier of the new right. Vance is a telling pick as a VP because it shows that Trump was choosing from a place of strength. Rather than choosing someone from another wing of the party — as he did when he selected Mike Pence — to shore up support, Trump chose someone who represents the next generation of his own wing. Vance is a right-wing idealogue, connected to the so-called New Right of ultraconservative political thinkers who say the are opposed to neoliberalism, and is organic to Trump’s base in a way that Trump himself isn’t. While Trump is an eclectic figurehead, Vance is an ideologically committed soldier.

The picking of Vance is all part of a project to reorient the Republican Party toward making more appeals to the working class. The economic program that drives much of the New Right is not inherently opposed to unions in the private sector, and Vance, as a member of this new wing of the Republican Party, represents a continued realignment that makes overtures to the native worker in the U.S.

Win or lose, Trump has reestablished himself in politics and given a huge boost to the New Right. All this adds up to a more reactionary situation with a Far Right on the offensive. Even if Trump is defeated at the ballot box — as we saw last time — this will not defeat the Far Right. Rather than focus on turning out the vote against Trump, we need to focus our energies on creating a movement and organization that can challenge and defeat the Right.

In response to an attempt by Kenya’s government to tax basic goods as part of an IMF-imposed bill, a youth uprising has emerged that shows no signs of ending soon. Anti-imperialist youth internationally can strengthen the movement and show solidarity with the protests by demanding an end to austerity, foreign debt, and imperialism. Let the youth in Kenya inspire resistance to imperialism across the world.

The attempted assassination of Donald Trump has added fuel to a polarized political scenario, and may put his campaign in a better position in the context of an extreme crisis in the Democratic Party.

The crisis facing the bipartisan regime makes phenomena like the assassination attempt against Trump all the more likely. Against the Right and against the attacks of the state, we are strongest in our workplaces and in the streets, free of the influence of either capitalist party and their allies. Learning from the past eight years, this political generation has the task of building a force that does not separate the fight against the Right from fighting for the working class and oppressed against this capitalist system.

On July 4th, many Americans celebrate U.S. Independence Day. But we know that the U.S. is a capitalist imperialist state, which carries out exploitation, oppression, and violence at home and abroad. This is nothing to celebrate.

What are your reasons not to celebrate July fourth? ⬇️

06/28/2024

Earlier this week, 400 Kenyan police arrived on the Caribbean nation to carry out an intervention organized by the UN and backed by the U.S. This is the first round in a multi-phase deployment of a total of 2,500 officers from countries including the Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Benin, Chad, and Jamaica, and will cost some $600 million.

For more than a year the U.S. and other imperialist countries have been organizing the "Multinational Mission". The U.S. has pledged $300 million to the operation and has already provided millions in funding along with France and Canada.

Haiti has experienced a breakdown of the state over the past several years with the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021 and popular protests forcing the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry in April this year. Henry's government had been illegitimately established with the backing of imperialism and not the support of the Haitian people. Since his forced resignation, various gangs have taken control of 80% of the country.

The instability and violence in Haiti real, but the U.S. and UN highlight them cynically to justify intervention that will not resolve the challenges the Haitian people face and will certainly come with another form of widespread violence. This instability comes in large part from a history of imperialist coups, military interventions, and illegitimate debts weaponized against the country since it first established itself as a nation through a successful slave-led revolution.

This has nothing to do with the interests or security of the Haitian people. Instead it is about stabilizing U.S. dominance of Haiti and the larger region. From the heart of imperialism where a generation of youth has been developing an anti-imperialist movement in solidarity with Palestine, we must also put forward solidarity with Haiti.

For the right to self-determination of the Haitian people! No to imperialist military intervention! Out with colonial imperialism in Latin America! Down with the IMF and the World Bank! For a socialist Haiti within the framework of a Federation of Socialist Republics of Latin America and the Caribbean!

Join Left Voice in a discussion on the fight for a free Palestine, the encampments and the fight for socialism.

As we enter our 8th month of protests we will discuss: what will it take to free Palestine? How are capitalism and imperialism intertwined and how does this help us understand our strategy to end the genocide and to free Palestine? We will discuss a working class strategy against the capitalist regimes across the Middle East, pointing to the working class as the subject that can free Palestine.

We will discuss the phenomena at the encampments and how as socialists in the US: what can we learn from these experiences? We will discuss the anti-imperialist character of our struggle, the need for class independence and the need for democracy in our movement. And we will discuss the current struggle against repression as central to our struggle for a free Palestine.

Join us to discuss the way forward for our movement.

06/01/2024

This Pride month begins amid Israel’s continued genocide in Gaza. Over 8 months, the Zionist state has killed over 36,000, displaced over a million, imposed conditions of famine on countless, and razed Gaza’s infrastructure to the ground. This is the face of a state that claims to be “the only democracy of the Middle East.” For years, in a cynical perversion of our struggles, Israel has touted itself to be a “safe haven” for q***r people, draping itself in our colors and pinkwashing its image to camouflage its atrocities for decades. But let’s be clear: any state that murders tens of thousands of people has nothing to do with q***r liberation.

Q***r struggle and the struggle for Palestine are interconnected, and we must take up the fight against imperialism and colonialism. Since its very inception, Israel has served as an imperialist enclave, particularly for the United States. In the belly of the imperialist beast, it is particularly necessary for us to fight against the U.S. war machine.

This month, our enemies will drape themselves in rainbow flags and claim to be our friends. From corporations that exploit us for their profits, to the Israeli state that murders our Palestinian siblings, to the Democratic party, which argues that we must support them to stop the far-right but then funds a genocide, we must resist all of these attempts to co-opt our struggle. And we fight against any homophobia and transphobia in the movement for Palestine, and any attempts to separate our struggles.

This Pride, we must fight to build a movement that stands with the radical workers and youth who are fighting against imperialism and capitalism. Against the cooptations of the imperialist bourgeoisie, and against the theocratic program of Hamas, Iran, and other fundamentalist leaderships that don’t fight for the liberation for all, we fight with urgency for a free, secular, and socialist Palestine – one that can truly guarantee freedom for all regardless of ethnicity and identity.

🚨ONTARIO WORKERS DEFEND STUDENTS🚨

The President of the University of Toronto has done what so many university Presidents around the country have done—She issued a notice to an encampment in solidarity with Palestine demanding that they clear out by Monday at 8:00 a.m. or be in violation of a trespass notice. As we have seen around the world, students are often arrested, beaten and brutalized by the police as a result of university policies such as this one.

President of the Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL), which represents 54 unions and one million workers in Ontario issued a statement instead calling on labor unions to an action on Monday at 8am at the encampment, promising that workers will stand against the police and the university administration in defense of students.

As the UAW union in the University of California system goes on strike against the repression of the Palestine movement, labor around the world is standing with the student movement and the encampments.

Solidarity with the students of University of Toronto, workers of Ontario Federation of Labor, and all students and workers standing with Palestine!

The UC Divest Coalition, Students for Justice in Palestine and UAW Local 4811 were among the organizers of the UCLA Student Walkout and protest. Hundreds of students matched through the campus also supporting the AFCSME Strike happening.

Speakers denounced Imperialism, the genocide and specifically UCLA Chancellor Gene Block who is supposed to testify against anti semitism on campus. Block stood by as students including Jewish students were brutalized by the hours long Zionist led right wing attack on the pro Palestine encampment.

UAW 4811 Rank and File members called out their union leadership to “Call UCLA Next” in the stand up. The caucus university must be run by the students, workers and community.

05/19/2024

Earlier this evening, Detroit police arrested protesters, including members of Left Voice and at a demonstration outside of “Genocide” Joe Biden’s speech at the NAACP dinner. The protest was organized by several different Detroit based activist organizations and stood in solidarity with the people of Gaza against Biden’s continued support for the genocide.

In typical brutal fashion, the police seemingly targeted people as they were leaving the protest and even tased a member of DWB. The total number of people arrested is still being determined as are what charges, if any, will be leveled. These arrests are part of an on-going crackdown of pro-Palestine protests happening across the country, showcased in the brutal repression of Gaza Solidarity Encampments. The line of the regime is clearly to force the movement off the streets with targeted and arbitrary arrests, heavy charges — in some cases such as at the City University of New York (CUNY) participants in encampments are facing felony charges — and increased brutality in how protesters are arrested.

The arrests seen in Detroit today and the repression around the country are an attack on our basic right to protest and an attempt to silence dissent ahead of the presidential election. All who care about protecting our right to free speech and defending the right to protest must oppose these arrests and stand with the protesters against further repression.

We call for the immediate release of all arrested and the dropping of all charges!

05/15/2024

Today marks the 76th anniversary of the Nakba, or “catastrophe” in Arabic. Yet the displacement and dispossession of Palestinian people from their homeland began even before the creation of the Zionist State of Israel in 1948, and continues to this day.

The Nakba was characterized by widespread violence, including massacres, forced evictions, and the destruction of homes and villages. Many Palestinians were killed or fled their homes in fear of violence, resulting in the displacement of around 750,000 Palestinians who became refugees. Many were forced to live in precarious refugee camps in Palestine and surrounding countries.

But it hasn’t ended. The ongoing genocide has already taken the lives of over 40,000 Palestinians, displaced over 1.5 million, and nearly destroyed the main cities of Gaza. Israel continues its attacks on Rafah, and a full invasion remains a threat.

Students all over the United States are building a movement for Palestine and against U.S. imperialism like we have not seen in decades. All over the country students, faculty, and supporters were building encampments and occupations for Palestine, to divest their universities from Israel, and to fight against the repression of pro-Palestine speech. While most of the encampments were swept, the fight continues in the streets, in our schools and universities, and in our workplaces and unions.

We must continue to fight to halt the genocide, end the siege and occupation, withdraw all Israeli troops from Gaza, and cease all U.S. aid to Israel.

We defend the right to national self-determination of the Palestinian people and we stand for a workers’ and socialist Palestine in which the Arab and Jewish people live together in peace, as part of a federation of socialist republics of the Middle East.

05/09/2024

In November 2023, Amazon workers signed a petition demanding “an immediate end to the company’s complicity in the genocide being carried out against Palestinians in Gaza.” The workers denounced Amazon’s provision of technology and artificial intelligence services to the state of Israel. This was not the first instance of Amazon worker actions in solidarity with Palestinians: Two years earlier, in October 2021, more than four hundred workers at Amazon and Google staged protests against Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion contract the multinational companies signed with the Israeli government to provide services to the occupying army. Nimbus was intended to create a “digital ecosystem” for “increased surveillance and illegal data collection on Palestinians,” in addition to facilitating the “expansion of Israel’s illegal settlements on Palestinian land,” the workers declared.

This is the starting point of Josefina L. Martínez’s new book, Amazon desde dentro: el secreto está en la explotación (Amazon from the Inside: Exploitation is the Secret to Its Success), published in March 2024 in Spain.

In the introduction, the author stresses that “at a time when the barbarism and hypocrisy of the world’s most powerful states takes on ever-more brutal forms, these small steps are very significant. Indications of new militancy, which, if extended, would open the possibility of an alternative to the current conditions of capitalist dystopia.”

Repression of the movement for Palestine is ongoing and intense. As the student movement is violently attacked, social media platforms are not only censoring content on the repression, but suppressing pro-Palestine content entirely and contributing to the criminalization of activists.
In light of the attacks on our democratic right to protest, these actions cannot stand.
