Out today, “MirrorMirror: The Reflective Surface in Contemporary Art” by Michael Petry () is a dazzling and intriguing exploration of the use of mirrors and reflective surfaces as a medium in global contemporary art.

Featured in the book for his series of Stag sculptures, including “Golden Sleeping Stag” and “Reclining Golden Stag,” British artist Carl Hopgood () applies gilded surfaces to sculptures that both reference ancient Greek mythology and are molded after the shape of his own body. In these works, a sleeping, gilded stag lies on a white sheeted mattress and looks as though the lightest touch would wake him, appearing dangerous as well as gentle. Here, Hopgood uses the reflectiveness of the gold to emphasize these juxtapositions between violence and beauty, and hopes that these q***r works are able to “reflect the battle of a hedonistic past and the battle between love and lust, the conscious and the unconscious.”

“Esther Mahlangu's art is a symphony of colors and traditions, weaving together a narrative that transcends borders and generations. Her upcoming book is a treasure trove, unlocking the secrets of her creative process and inviting readers into her rich cultural tapestry.” — John Legend ()

Esther Mahlangu is globally acclaimed for her bright and bold abstract paintings with vivid, geometric patterns that are rooted in South Africa’s Ndebele artistic tradition.

A disruptor from an early age, Mahlangu was the first person to reimagine Ndebele visual artistic style—historically used for decorating houses—on painting media such as canvas, and she has since become a much-loved cultural ambassador of the Ndebele Nation.

Out today, “Esther Mahlangu: To Paint is in My Heart” celebrates Mahlangu’s remarkable journey as a pioneer of contemporary African art, whose vibrant and distinctive paintings have captured the hearts of many worldwide.

Out today, “Hockney’s Pictures” is the definitive retrospective of one of the world's most popular and acclaimed artists.

The story of David Hockney () is one of passion: passion for seeing, passion for telling, passion for images. All his pictures—sometimes tender, as when he draws close friends and family; sometimes playful, as in his paintings of lazy, carefree days at the pool; sometimes awe-inspiring, as with his monumental images of the Grand Canyon—convey what it means to be in the world, to see it, to move in it, to love it.

This constant exploration of how to communicate such feelings through art emerges with particular clarity in this stunning, lively volume, now updated to include recent works which have been selected and organized by Hockney personally, and track his lifelong experiments in ways of looking and depicting.

Harry Gruyaert () was one of the first European photographers to take advantage of color. Heavily influenced by pop art, his dense compositions are known for weaving together texture, light, color, and architecture to create filmic, jewel-hued tableaux. As a result, they often seem closer to painting than to photography.

Although his wanderlust has taken him to many exotic locations, Gruyaert has frequently returned to his country of birth. Here, he found unexpected beauty. Urban lighting, neon storefronts, glimpses behind suburban dwellings, passersby wandering drunkenly home, ports that never sleep, countryside with seemingly infinite horizons.

Out today, “Harry Gruyaert: Homeland” presents both Gruyaert’s more recent color photography and his black-and-white images from the 1970s that punctuate this visual immersion and journey through the lowlands.

We are saddened to learn of the passing of world-renowned archaeologist and distinguished Thames & Hudson author Professor Colin Renfrew, described by Cyprian Broodbank, his current successor as Disney Professor of Archaeology at the University of Oxford, as “one of the titans of modern archaeology” who “pioneered new, theoretically informed ways of thinking about the explanation of social and political change in the past . . . while advocating scientific techniques of dating and provenance as an integral part of archaeological endeavor.”

Thames & Hudson is proud of its longstanding association with Professor Renfrew. Archaeology students the world over have for decades been fortunate to have as their vade mecum the bestselling textbooks "Archaeology" and "Archaeology Essentials: Theories, Methods and Practice" by Colin Renfrew and Paul Bahn. Bearing all the hallmarks of Colin Renfrew’s incisive thinking, scientific knowledge, and lucid prose, this has rightly become and remains the standard work in the discipline.

We as a publisher mourn his death and the loss of a close and loyal friend, whose contribution to our list has been immeasurable and enduring.
