Omval was made quickly, within a week, right after a gig (with serpent player Berlinde Deman) that left me really inspired. Back home, I reinstalled my live setup and tried to recreate the atmosphere of said concert. Of course it turned out completely different, but the recordings of these ‘hardware jams’ were very useful nonetheless, and form the main component of the collage that is Omval. I think the result has the organic quality of a performance, with a complexity that I could never achieve in a live set.

Flag Day is proud to present the debut work by Sawn Half. Sawn Half is the harsh noise project of Joe Hassick, a New Jersey based artist.

Sink is beautifully abrasive. Heavily textured, flowing, j***y, broken and blown out. My definition of a perfect harsh noise album. Sawn Half deserves your attention and I feel incredibly lucky to be able to promote this kind of work. This won't be the last we hear of Sawn Half on Flag Day.

Flag Day is proud to present this new work by Texas heavy hitter, Scathing.

I don’t release as much harsh noise as I’d like. So I was thrilled when Kenny agreed to a release. Scathing has been consistently releasing some of the most punishing harsh noise since the projects debut.

Clipping Wings of Grief 45 minutes of pure catharsis.

"An array or swarm of vitalities, intertwined, of non human powers which transit channels. Trajectories that follow machinal logics, preselected and predictable; suddenly they exploit an aesthetic of the interruption or malfunction. Uncertain assemblages without intentions that remembers well the emergentivism, unpredictable and highly creative of Alexander. The nisus of the Greek which is the pulse of things to reach anew, the creative impetus.

Cracks, leaks, turbulence. Frictions, rebounds, scrapes. Ignitions, drags, silent intermissions. Batiments, without cause, immersed in a logic of contingency.

How much in common do we have the human and the non-human. How much shared vitality. The same impulse of things in beings. Lags, obstructions, desynchronizations. Fluids, currents, forces. Channels, connectivity, and broken connection.

From the darkness of the macrobial soil or an intertidal zone, to the interior of a tubular structure, the similar search: the porous and the minute, the precarious taking an unusual power.

Is there any allusion to the high instability caused by consumption? A sonic reflection on the transversality of the vital where conflicts, confrontations, catastrophes and incidents articulate a microworld?"

Moldy Cushions was recorded from the summer of 2022 until spring 2023 at my new Clamorworks studio in San Pablo, California. Additional parts were recorded in Brasília, Brazil while working on the SESILab science museum and in Hyderabad, India while on tour with Seeded Plain. This is my first solo album since 2016's Bizarre Flight on Gertrude Tapes, with most of the time in-between focused on other collaborative projects.

The pieces on Moldy Cushions started as improvised sketches, with many of the structural elements developing during editing. A few of the instruments on this album were commissioned pieces that are now in the hands of artists whom I collaborated with. The buzzing drones on Neoprene Concourse are from an instrument that I was given by João Fernando Arrais Serodio out of Leme, Brazil.

Bryan Day - invented instruments, broken electronics, vintage computer synthesizers and field recordings.

Artist Spotlight: Eloine

Bryan Day is a sound artist, musical instrument inventor, and conceptual artist based in San Francisco. Using scavenged electronics, repurposed mechanical components, and amplified materials, he re-imagines them into constructivist sound sculptures. Since the late-1990s, he has built over a hundred sound object devices, from amplified measuring tape, hacked radio transceivers to electromechanical installations using magnets, hard drives and pendulums. His recorded work ranges from noisy electroacoustic improvisation to drony minimalism and audio collage, which is showcased in his projects Euphotic, Collision Stories and Seeded Plain. Day has performed, taught workshops, and built sound installations across Europe, Asia and the Americas. During his days, he can be found designing, building, and repairing science museum exhibits at the Exploratorium in San Francisco.

Eloine’s new album “Moldy Cushions” comes out April 19th

"The composition of “évaporation“ started in my Parisian studio in 2021, and has been completed in Le Havre for the mixing process during 2022. It is my fourth solo album, after Resonant Doom, Ilumen (coup de coeur of Charles Cros Academy 2021), and Siamoises.

First was the desire to make a purely studio release (“Distortions de vapeur“ excluded, a piece which I play also in concert) while including some of my musical interests in different domains such as electronic, contemporary music, electroacoustic, and film scoring.

The title refers to many facts like physical (elements change of state), climate (water cycle), and philosophy (loss of the senses). All this is only a starting point, never a musical illustrative program.

The field recordings are used here as sound sources recorded during travels and then hardly transformed (as in “Yamuna River Variations“, “Ta Peau est une surface brûlante“) or totally newly recorded and almost untouched for the need of the composition (as in Morsures solaires).

All compositions have been written and played by me using modular synthesis, virtual instrument software, electric guitar, hand percussion, keyboards, and field recordings."

-Eryck Abecassis

All titles composed and arranged by Eryck Abecassis on modular synthesizers, guitar, sampled instruments software, Roger Linn linnstrument keyboard, field recordings.

Studio : Mobile courgette (Paris), LH 151 (Le Havre)
Train station, streets and beach recordings location : New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Madrid, Héraclée Beach La Croix-Valmer.

BACK IN STOCK:
Terence Hannum "Disoslving the Bonds" CD (Flag Day Recordings)

"Terence Hannum is perhaps best known as the keyboardist and vocalist of prolific Chicago-born experimental metal trio Locrian, who blend dense, crushing drones and harsh, sweeping black metal to stir up some serious dark energy. But Hannum is also an accomplished visual artist, writer, and solo musician. I was expecting his brand-new album, Dissolving the Bonds, to contain some Locrian-style dissonance, but when I hit play I was treated to five warm tracks of calming, ambient beauty. These cinematic pieces focus on swelling layers, dreamy melodies, and subtle chanted vocals. The title track nods to John Carpenter synth compositions, and my favorite song, “Tender Resignations,” is essentially a pop tune with oscillating organs that recall the sound of the second Su***de record, 1980’s Alan Vega and Martin Rev, which Ric Ocasek of the Cars produced for no pay. The album culminates with “Everyone Has Gathered Here to Destroy You,” a glacial, 15-minute work that buries hypnotic synth patterns under growing and shrinking layers of static. Hannum has an uncanny ability to conjure specific moods, and when it comes to tranquility, Dissolving the Bonds is a masterpiece." - Chicago Reader
