Rope Sect “Enstrangement” LP/CD

Since their humble debut in 2017 with the Personae Ingratae EP, Germany’s ROPE SECT have quietly built a formidable canon of work ever since, punctuated by their massively hailed The Great Flood debut album in 2020 and further enhanced by the stop-gap mini-album Proskynesis in 2022. While an undoubtedly unique entry for IRON BONEHEAD, ROPE SECT’s eerily minimalist deathrock speaks to the darkness in everyone, whether they’re full-on metal or far from that. Simply, power and poignancy come in many forms, and ROPE SECT have secured theirs with an idiosyncratic sound that continues to find new listeners across a wide spectrum of experience. Following from the more electronic textures found on Proskynesis, ROPE SECT return to refine their sound further with Estrangement. A full-length work comprising eight songs in 43 minutes, Estrangement is suitably structured for maximum immersion: twilit in every respect, each song stretches out to generous lengths, revealing a staggering sense of space that’s sensual and suffocating in equal measure. Indeed, ROPE SECT return to those fertile fields of haunting introversion found on The Great Flood and plough them with just the subtlest hint of sparkle without losing their unapologetically lo-fi approach; credit those clarified-but-not-too-much sonics to the mastering by Mario Dahmen at Liquid Aether Audio. As such, Estrangement feels comforting for its familiarity, but its secrets likewise plunge deeper into the human experience, hushed yet portentous for their quiet magnitude…

It was but the early autumn of 2018 when INVOCATION released The Mastery of the Unseen EP through IRON BONEHEAD. Although only two songs, The Mastery of the Unseen was presciently titled, for the Chilean power-trio made masterful strides since their debut CDR in 2016 and the extremely promising Seance Part. I demo released later that year. Exhibiting the same sulfurous energy as the first works but now displaying a uniquely feral poise, that two-song salvo set the stage for yet another presciently titled work in early 2020: Attunement to Death, again released by IRON BONEHEAD. Indeed with this mini-album did INVOCATION reach a hellish harmony with their classic South American diabolism, but on Attunement to Death did they imbue it with an ever-deeper - and ever-more-unique - aspect that bountifully displayed their authentic grounding in the occult. At long last, nearly a decade after their formation, INVOCATION unleash their full-length debut: The Archaic Sanctuary (Ritual Body Postures). Upon first blush, thankfully, very little has changed in the Chileans’ sound; restless, roiling, and most definitely RIPPING, their teeth-gnashing gnarliness is squarely situated between black metal and death metal, with no compromise nor fence-sitting to be found. But, where the mini-length predecessor saw the trio exhibiting confidence to spare, The Archaic Sanctuary utterly EXPLODES with it…

Deathless Void “The Voluptuous Fire of Sin” LP

Hailing from the resurgent Dutch black metal scene, the then-mysterious DEATHLESS VOID made their public debut with a self-titled EP in early 2022, released by IRON BONEHEAD. Across its three-song / 15-minute runtime was a vacuum of violent, post-modern death energy. Their foundation was undoubtedly black metal, but their vision was not blinkered by the past; if anything, the jet-stream of crushing chaos across Deathless Void was futuristic, albeit a ruined vision of such. Reprising two of those EP tracks, The Voluptuous Fire of Sin becomes the penultimate first statement from DEATHLESS VOID. Much of that foundation is fortunately still in place - palpitating physicality mutated into cold, cutting, gleaming-yet-bloodstained steel - but the now-quartet have excised some of the noisier crags of that EP in favor of a more organic soundfield, which exceptionally amplifies the latent nightsky melodicism of their black metal. In terms of that EP, one could point to later Katharsis or Antaeus or especially turn-of-the-millennium Thorns as touchstones; on The Voluptuous Fire of Sin, there’s a palpably late ‘90s feel in both songwriting and production, such that one could psychically slot the album among the No Fashion Records roster back then. Still, said EP whipped forth its own dread and delirium, and DEATHLESS VOID duly maximize that sensation here. The riffs and rhythms may attack in a somewhat-familiar manner, but coursing through their bloodstream is a haunting aspect that hovers both above and below, each texture daubed in nightmarishly psychedelic color - all emanating from BLACK. Not for nothing does the record (violently) begin with “Psychedelic Warfare” on to “Purple Triad,” with “The Ecstasy of Sin” able to be tasted when “Crossing the Threshold” until, finally, there’s a “Curse Upon You”...

The transition in style that Goatlord underwent between the releases of “Demo ‘87” and the “Sodomize the Goat” demo in 1988 began to expose some differences in the individual members’ visions for the band’s future direction. Although guitarist Joe Frankulin has been quoted as stating that the deliberate attempt to slow the pace of certain sections of the songs quite dramatically had gone a bit too far, vocalist Ace Still instead embraced this change wholeheartedly, which eventually led to him parting ways with Goatlord prior to the band’s signing with Turbo Music for the recording of their first album, “Reflections of the Solstice,” in 1991. In the wake of Ace’s departure, Frankulin and company enlisted the vocal services of Mitch Harris, who would soon become better known for his involvement in Na**lm Death. Curiously, although it is commonly recognized that Harris indeed recorded lead vocal tracks for the entire album, it is instead the voice of Ace Still that appears on the released recording. Given the band’s known indulgence in hallucinogenics, it is as fitting as it is mysterious that Ace Still somehow re-emerged from the fog to record the lead vocal tracks on “Reflections...,” and it is perhaps equally interesting to note that Harris’ vocals only surface as a backing track on “Sacrifice.” These differences in musical visions aside, “Reflections of the Solstice” followed much in the same vein as the “Sodomize the Goat” demo. In fact, every song on the album had also been previously recorded for the 1988 demo, and the band continued to masterfully fuse frenetically-paced death/thrash segments with more tortured, black/doom dirges…

There are few styles in metal so uniquely tethered to a particular place and time as that produced by a handful of Greek Black Metal bands in the early 1990s. Without question, the unholy trinity of this scene was composed of Rotting Christ, Necromantia, and Varathron. These three bands produced the most significant recordings in the canon of Greek Black Metal, and, to many fans and followers of the scene, Varathron’s 1993 debut LP, “His Majesty at the Swamp” represents the apex of the sound and spirit of Hellas’ contribution to the Black Metal genre. All of the representative traits of the style find their expression on this album – sonorous and melancholic guitars, the rich, occult atmosphere, ecstatic vocals, imbued with sinister intent, funereal keyboard flourishes, the bleak dampness of the production, the conjuration of a sense of abject solitude, and the somber pace of the tracks – aligned in perfect resonance with the pulse of Greek Black Metal. Having gone in and out of print several times through the years on various formats and in varying degrees of quality, band leader and original member, Necroabyssious, decided to issue a definitive version of “His Majesty at the Swamp” on his own label, Order of the Blood Dog.

Random story…
I once shared a flight out of Berlin with Daniel after one of the NWN fests. I was on my way to India for work and him and his friends were going back to Frankfurt. I was in my business attire and they were still wearing their beer soaked clothing from the night before. We chatted for a bit while waiting for the flight and discussed the nuisances of running an underground label. I still remember him saying “not everything needs to sell out so fast. It’s sometimes better to find out about old releases and find them still available in underground Distros.” This resonated with me at the time and still does to this day. In today’s insta-cult metal scene where everything is ultra limited and releases are pumped out constantly like cheap commodities to be collected, we need to be reminded of the true essence of the underground, to push the best music and keep them available on physical format.

In hindsight we must’ve looked funny to bystanders - business casual me vs half drunk Metalheads.

As the journey unfolds, guests such as Serbian singer Jovana Ćuk and the Engberg brothers, Daniel and David, lend their voices to the epic narrative. Fåntratt stands in league with the likes of Örnatorpet, Bo Hansson, Ildjarn, and Paysage d’Hiver, yet forges its own path. Fåntratt is the latest addition to the Nordvis roster.
