Mary Lou Quinlan presents the one-woman play The God Box on Tuesday, May 7th & Wednesday, May 8th @ the Sheen Center.

Based on her New York Times Best-seller, when Mary Lou Quinlan’s beloved mother dies, her family is left bereft—until Quinlan finds her mother’s God Box or rather, boxes.

These simple containers are stuffed with tiny notes written by her mother, asking and praying for everything from the right flooring for her daughter’s new home to a cure for her own blood cancer.

Note by note, Mary Lou unearths insights into her mother’s compassion, faith, and perseverance, and revelations of her innermost thoughts—nostalgic, surprising, and even a bit shocking.

This powerful show takes audiences on a journey where Mary Lou faces the ultimate human challenge— learning to let go. Directed by Labyrinth Theater Company's Martha Wollner, "The God Box, A Daughter's Story" is an award-winning show, loved by audiences worldwide.

A universal story that is best experienced alongside the people who mean the most to you.

In Ireland, 1 February marks the beginning of spring and the celebration of Lá Fhéile Bríde, St Brigid’s Day. Celebrating the creativity of women. The day has long symbolized hope, renewal, and the feminine.

We celebrate the strength, creativity, resilience, and intellect of all of the women who have graced the pages and contributed to Irish America and the Irish America community over the years.

Irish playwright Samuel Beckett died on December 22, 1989. Following his wife Suzanne’s death in July of that same year, Beckett was confined to a nursing home suffering from emphysema and Parkinson’s. He died at the age of 83. Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1969. His wife viewed the award as a “catastrophe,” fearing the fame and attention it would garner. Beckett, however, was already quite famous for his plays such as “Waiting for Godot,” “Krapp’s Last Tape,” “Endgame,” and “Happy Days.” https://www.irishamerica.com/2018/02/beckett-unplugged/

Maud Gonne McBride, Irish patriot, revolutionary, and Home Rule activist, was born in Dublin on this day in 1865. Following her mother’s death, Gonne was sent to Paris for her education. When she returned to Ireland, Gonne moved to Donegal where she became involved in a campaign to protect people from home evictions. This was the start of her very active political career. She wrote articles on feminist and political issues and founded the revolutionary group, Daughters of Erin. However, she is best remembered as being William Butler Yeats’s muse, although she never returned his love.

Luke Kelly, musician, and founder of The Dubliners was born November 16, 1939, in Dublin. Kelly grew up in a working-class family. At the age of 13, he left school and went to England where he worked in building. He was fired and continued living in England while working various odd jobs. As the folk revival began to take form in England, Kelly began memorizing songs in addition to learning the banjo. He began performing in public. He returned to Dublin in 1962 and joined a ballad tour with the Ronnie Drew Ballad Group. At his suggestion, the group renamed themselves The Dubliners. Kelly also had a solo career. His rendition of “The Rocky Road to Dublin” is best remembered.

Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh was born in Co. Monaghan on October 21, 1904. Kavanagh is perhaps most famous for his epic poem “The Great Hunger” which chronicles the desires of peasant farmer Patrick Maguire. Kavanagh is also well known for his poem “Raglan Road” which was eventually made into a song and set to the music “The Dawning of the Day” by Luke Kelly and The Dubliners. Poet Seamus Heaney has acknowledged that Kavanagh had a great influence on his own poems. https://www.irishamerica.com/2018/12/patrick-kavanagh/

One of Ireland’s most famous playwrights and novelists, Oscar Wilde was born on October 16, 1854. Wilde was born to a wealthy family. His father was an eminent Dublin surgeon and his mother was a talented poet, where Wilde likely inherited his passion for writing from. He attended Trinity College Dublin and then went on to study at Magdalen College Oxford. His works, like the play “The Importance of Being Earnest” and the novel “The Picture of Dorian Grey” are riddled with wit and aestheticism. https://www.irishamerica.com/2014/05/oscar-doc-a-trip-to-leadville-colorado/?fbclid=IwAR2_1lWZPfKDaYuNx2pHgkOgWvznuVoGO2RaHOLcABayn5Pa0UxOvmsUkGY

Wolfe Tone visited Belfast for the first time on October 14, 1791, and established the Society of the United Irishmen. Tone founded the United Irishmen with the help of other famous nationalists like Henry Joy McCracken, Thomas Russell, and Samuel Neilson. The United Irishmen were inspired by both the French and American revolutions and tried to achieve parliamentary reform. Eventually, the society would go on to lead the 1798 rebellion, which failed.

Ireland’s first public railroad, the Dublin and Kingstown Railway, was opened on October 9, 1834. After founding and laying the first tracks in 1831, a short delay occurred in the building due to opposition from some landowners, the laying of tracks over an embankment, and the creation of the Booterstown Marsh. The first train departed on October 9, consisting of eight cars pulled by the “Hibernia.” The railway line was eventually expanded.
