“Cherry Koch is a painter and installation artist based in Duluth MN. A 2020 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Superior, Cherry has developed a signature style. Lush colors and playful props convey a cheerful exuberance, but the oil portraits are are also suffused with melancholy.

Growing up in a family run restaurant, deli paper and diner scenes are a commonplace within Cherry’s artworks. Server and Bartender at Corktown Deli in Duluth MN.”

Party with the 86 Logic team at LIC for our happy hour at 7PM tomorrow! 🍻

Following our writers’ workshop at 5PM, we’ll have beers and hang with the editors, plus a brief Q&A 💬 where you’ll have the chance to challenge their logic and ask the most telling of questions, like: why doesn’t own a button up? Is ’s mustache real? When wears a chef jacket, does he actually believe he is a chef? Why does it take so long to get the issue you’ve ordered? & any other pressing industry questions—magazine-related or otherwise.
🔪🍅 The only thing we’ll be trying to sell you is a good time (OK, maybe some subscriptions or totes if you’re interested).

See you there 👋

“Yes, Chef,” featured in our latest issue, tells them true story of a fragmented experience being the only woman in Back-of-House, gathering from notes the author Halle Murcek once jotted on receipt paper. Having earned acceptance and burn marks, this brilliant author shows us the ways in which this precious time shaped her as a writer.

"Halle is a 36 year old Midwest born, New York bred writer who holds both a BA in Creative Nonfiction from Denison University and an MFA in fiction from The New School.
There are very few jobs she hasn't had in the industry; from server to food runner to expeditor to S.A. to bar back to host, Maitre D, manager and everything in between: she's done it all. Currently the Guest Experience Manager for Union Square Hospitality Group, you can find her bopping around the front doors of their restaurants and playing table tetris with the reservation books. The small things are her favorite because they matter the most. Halle uses her restaurant experience to fuel her creative juices in her writing and is currently working on a collection of essays about the industry. You can find her solo at any bar in the city with a book in one hand and an old fashioned in the other."

“The summer after I turned 21 was a big turning point for me. I had just dropped out of the citadel, got a job dishwashing and as a bellhop to support myself and was probably the most depressed and lonely I've ever been in my life…. creating imaginary landscapes from memories in my head where things were better helped me realize that a place like that was possible and I could ask for help. This painting encompasses what got me through these times.

The mountains, next to the protruding hand, form into the face of my past self which is looking to the egret that represents my present self. The past looks to the present with a melancholy gaze, and the present looks to the past with wistful sentimentality of perseverance. This is me flying through a memory, glad to see how I have progressed since.” — Landon Carter

It’s an honor to have published Landon’s work in our latest issue, featured on the right in the above image: If I Am Lost It's Only For A Little While" (2022). Layered Resin and Acrylic Paint. 36 in x 24 in x 2 in.
