When Daddy has to go to work on Mother’s Day afternoon (we celebrated with a fancy breakfast made by Daddy, church at home and then take out fajitas for lunch, and a family game of Settlers!), you have afternoon dessert of chocolate cake in a mug for everyone while we read the next few chapters of our read aloud chapter book!

My family has had three weeks of distance learning from home now. And I can’t even begin to tell you how many ways we’re already used our Usborne Books to help with homework and supplement our learning! These are just a few that I remembered to take pictures of. Here’s a fun project that we did today! My kids teachers sent home homework for their core subjects (K and 3), but no homework for the others. Which I’m ok with. But I don’t want them to go completely void in those areas, so we’re doing fun science experiments, and reading great social studies topic books when we have extra time to keep those subjects up and have fun!

How to turn an egg into a bouncy ball!!

Place an egg in a mason jar and fill with enough vinegar to cover egg fully. Place mason jar lid and ring on loosely and make observations of what happens for two days.

Dump out liquid from the jar (after the two days) and see what happens!

(Ok... it can bounce, but not from high heights! Do not drop from standing up... the inside stays raw 😜)

Pro Tip 1: experiment with bouncy egg OUTSIDE! 😂

Pro Tip #2: Do one for each sibling so there aren’t tears when one sibling breaks it and the others didn’t get a chance to try it.

(We’re currently experimenting to see what happens to a hard boiled egg! We’ll update in a few days!)

STORYTIME! 😁📚🥰

Grab you kiddos and let them listen to two of our family’s favorite picture books!

During social distancing, we will have opportunities to teach math, spelling, phonics, algebra, science and any other subject that is taught in school.

One thing that will be greatly missed is the interactions with other children who come from different places and different situations. I think books about these things are great reminders during this time.

Books bring peace...

I don’t know about your household, but God has blessed me with four strong willed, competitive children. While these qualities can be big blessings for them in many areas of their lives, it leads to lots of sibling fighting and tears at home.

We love games, but someone is usually in tears by the end because there has to be a loser (good life lesson, just not always fun to deal with). What Mom and Dad ask them to do isn’t always what they want to do, so you guessed it, more tears.

But reading... brings peace. They sit and listen. No fighting. No losing. Quality time spent together.

Read to...

📚strengthen brains
📚build imaginations
📚connect with others
📚bring peace to the room

Thankful today for God’s gifts of strong willed children and books! 💜
