ABOUT THE ARTISTS & EVENTS:
Rosary O'Neill, Ph.D., Rory O'Neill Schmitt, Ph.D., and Rachelle O’Brien, MA are thrilled to announce the SISTER CITIES: NEW ORLEANS AND PARIS art exhibition in Paris. The artwork highlights New Orleans and Paris, showing the long-lasting friendship of these two cities. This exhibit includes stunning fine art photography, short films, and multi-media artwork focusing on the beautiful architecture, inspiring landscapes, and poetic people of Paris and New Orleans.
The art reception (November 5, 2024, at 6pm) will celebrate the artworks in the exhibition. Sister Cities: New Orleans and Paris showcases the beauty of authentic New Orleans and Paris. At the brief artist talk (in French and English), the artists will welcome guests and share the connections between New Orleans and Paris. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served and the public is invited to attend.
In addition to viewing the fine art photography and multi-media sculptures, attendees will participate in an immersive experience including music and film in the galleries. Short films created and produced by the artists will be exhibited: Garden District, Love Immortal, and Degas is Here.
The award-winning film, Garden District, will be making its Paris premiere at Sister Cities. This short film has won global awards for best director (Oley Sassone), best short film, best actor (Barret O’Brien, Bryan Batt), best actress (Janet Shea), best supporting actress (Sherri Eakin), best set design, and best editing (2021-2023).
Sister Cities attendees will have the opportunity to listen the original song, “Love Immortal”, written by New Orleanians Eric Laws and Rachelle O’Brien. This music was inspired by Kate Chopin in New Orleans. A short film, Love Immortal, created with local artist, Jeff Louviere, will make its world premiere at the exhibition. Accompanying text for the short film (in French and English) tells the narrative of Kate Chopin’s connections to Louisiana and France.
An additional artists’ presentation (November 7, 2024, at 6pm) will further delve into the life of Louisiana literary icon, Kate Chopin, followed by a reception and a book signing by Dr. O’Neill and Dr. Schmitt. Authors, Dr. Rory Schmitt and Dr. Rosary O’Neill, will discuss Kate Chopin and Edgar Degas in New Orleans (from research of their books published in 2024 and 2023). These acclaimed New Orleans native mother-daughter co-authors have significantly researched Chopin and Degas for their nonfiction books, published by Arcadia Publishing & The History Press. Key photography in the book (much of it including in the exhibition) was created by sisters: Rory Schmitt and Rachelle O’Brien.
Kate Chopin in New Orleans is an explosive biography focusing on the sensual life of the renowned feminist novelist in Louisiana. Set against the backdrop of Reconstruction Louisiana, the book explores Chopin's journey as a writer and her impact on American literature. Chopin’s novel, The Awakening, was set in Louisiana and 2024 celebrates its 125th anniversary.
Sister Cities was supported by the generous sponsorship of New Orleans & Company. Additional sponsors include Brennan’s Restaurants, Parkway Bakery and Tavern, Arcadia Publishing, and Foyer International D’Accueil De Paris- Jean Monnet.
Join us for the ultimate celebration of Kate Chopin's literary legacy in her beloved city of New Orleans!
