Helldivers 2 Fans Have Some Ideas For The DSS!

Helldivers 2 has been having a smashing time ever since The Game Awards. The Omens of Tyranny update brought everything that fans have been waiting for – melee weapons, vehicles, and of course, the elusive Illuminate. The player count is at an all-time high and the game has reclaimed its spot among Steam's top games.

Helldivers 2 Proves Easier Can Be Better

"No pain, no gain" isn't always the best policy. Sometimes, making it easier on the players can increase playtime and activity.

It's hard to imagine the state the game was in just a couple of months ago, with the player count dropping drastically due to nerfs and lack of content. This progress has made us forget about all the issues the game was plagued with. All but one issue – the Democracy Space Station, a.k.a. the DSS.

Helldivers 2 Community Gives Suggestions for Improving The DSS

After a lot of hard work and filler Major Orders, the Helldivers finally got their version of the Death Star operational. However, it was a major disappointment as it indiscriminately rained shells down upon friend and foe alike. Reacting to the backlash, Arrowhead promised that the DSS would be tweaked, and hopefully ready for action against the Illuminate.

Over on the Helldivers 2 Subreddit, a post by TripleWhiskeyShot sparked a discussion among players about what they'd like to see from Super Earth's superweapon. "Could be 380 still but give it a delay and a warning like the Mortar warning from Automatons. Also give it a zone marker or something on the map," said one of those comments.

However, others wanted to see the weapon systems of the DSS changed completely. Another suggestion to Arrowhead was that "they replace the constant barrage with orbital lasers from the DSS, turn it from WW1 artillery nightmare to a laser rave party". I'm not going to lie, watching a barrage of orbital lasers from the distance would look pretty awesome, but maybe a bit too overpowered.

Another neat and subtle suggestion said, "Have the DSS drop a shield generator at the center so you can either run away or run into the shield. Keeps some of the chaos but also gives you a fair warning and chance." The sheer chaos unfolding around you while you're protected under a shield sound like a scene right from the game.

Darren Rizzi aiming to become Saints' full-time HC!

When Dennis Allen was fired in November, it came as little surprise that special team's coordinator Darren Rizzi took over as head coach on an interim basis. As expected, the latter sees the team’s stretch run as a means of auditioning for the position full-time.

“It all depends on what the organization’s looking for,” Rizzi said when discussing the Saints’ HC search via ESPN’s Katherine Terrell. “Sometimes when you go with the hot name or the hot coordinator, I don’t think that a lot of times owners or GMs take into account the things that they haven’t done. They haven’t worked with the players on the other side of the ball, and they don’t have any experience with special teams.”

Indeed, Rizzi’s third-phase experience makes him unique compared to many other head coaching candidates. For many staffers, the path to an opportunity to lead a team involves a track record of success on the defensive or (especially recently) offensive side of the ball. Rizzi has worked exclusively as a special team's coordinator at the NFL level, but he has also served as a head coach.

The 54-year-old coached New Haven from 1999 to 2001 and took charge of Rhode Island for the 2008 campaign. Those tenures came at the Division II and FCS levels; however, other candidates with experience in higher-profile positions (including NFL gigs) will be available during the 2025 hiring cycle. So far, the Saints have been joined by the Jets and Bears in need of a full-time coach, and others will no doubt join them after the regular season ends.

New Orleans went 2-7 this year before Allen’s dismissal, making a run to the postseason nearly impossible for Rizzi. The team (officially eliminated from the playoffs on Sunday) has gone 3-2 since the coaching change despite dealing with numerous injuries on offense. Continued performances like those seen so far could help Rizzi’s case for taking on the full-time gig.

As he acknowledged, though, it will still be a challenge to get the posting for 2025. Rizzi interviewed with the Dolphins in 2019 before Brian Flores was ultimately hired, and he received another look in 2021 after Sean Payton departed the Saints (preceding Allen’s promotion to HC). A report from last month indicated Rizzi could be a strong contender to have the interim tag removed; it will be interesting to see if that winds up being the case once the season is over.

What The Saints Should Take Away and Need to Learn from Another Lost Season!

With the Falcons victory over the Giants on Sunday, the Saints have been eliminated from the postseason for the fourth consecutive year. It's become a familiar story for New Orleans, being out of it by midseason and then trying to rally to make something of it. Unfortunately, that strategy has failed yet again.

We're going to look at two angles for the Saints here, with the first focusing on what the Saints should take away and learn from another losing season. The other will be focusing on what they can take away, more of a positive spin. Call it lessons learned or having to face harsh realities, but these are some clear areas New Orleans needs to look at in the mirror.

What The Saints SHOULD Take Away from Another Losing Season:

Injuries Weren't Their Only Problem

Injuries are a part of the game, and that's not new information. Yes, it's unfortunate and it certainly played a factor in the Saints' losing season, but there's deeper issues here. The fact that the soft tissue injuries were more common early on (honestly going back to training camp) and it took the team until November to introduce their 'activation' period to cut down on them is pretty crazy.

Bad luck happens, but good teams do overcome the injuries and can weather that storm. Look at the Rams as an example. The coach does matter too. The argument can also be made to have better depth at positions, and that's an area where New Orleans needs to grow too.

Injuries are unfortunate, but the Saints just can't use this as a primary driver for having another losing season.

They Have to Get Better at Playing Complete Games

With as many one-score losses as New Orleans has had over the years, they have to find a way to finish games. If some of those games go the other way, then maybe it means they're in the playoffs. Maybe it means they're just on the cusp of something. Regardless, they are what the record says and the need to play four quarters of football every week and show up in all three phases of the game has to be a focal point.

Everything Has to Be on the Table in the Offseason

Four years without a postseason appearance isn't really acceptable if you're a fan of the Saints. It also shouldn't be acceptable if you're in a high position with the team. They went three straight years (2014-2016) without getting in and that prompted some major changes. When you get into territory of the 2001-2005 Saints, then you're in trouble.

It goes without saying, but the next Saints head coach has to be the right one. Continuity with Dennis Allen didn't work out, and he clearly wasn't the guy to follow in Sean Payton's footsteps. If that plan includes Mickey Loomis as the GM and Derek Carr as your quarterback, then early sustainable success has to be the measuring stick. There are some tough conversations to be had in the building, and when it's all said and done there could be an entirely new coaching staff in the building on both sides of the ball.

Here's something I said in a recent radio appearance, which I believe is really true on the outlook of the Saints.

You cannot just look at how this team has gone for four years and just sit here and say that you think you're close. I don't think the close argument is there. I think you're in a bad division and you're trying to convince yourself that you can compete in this bad division and look where it's kind of got you. It's not changed anything for this team.

Maybe The Offseason Strategy Needs to Change

There's areas on the roster the Saints have to get much better at, and hopefully they see that. Being able to navigate the salary cap every year is great, but here's the thing. It has to work to avoid criticism. It hasn't. The first time it really worked against New Orleans was in 2021 when the revenues during COVID caused nearly a $16 million decrease. They played some catchup and have handled it, but is it really hindering them?

They're in a spot where they can't tear it down, because financially it's impossible. They're going to call this a retooling, and that's honestly all it can be. Realistically, it might be another couple of years before they can get out of that cycle. What's the strategy to get there? That's the multimillion dollar question ahead of them to figure out.

The Saints have many lessons to learn from another season of disappointment, but will they and how will it change? When they get finished with their final three regular season games, we'll see how serious they are about change.

Young Saints players have a chance to prove themselves on Monday Night Football!

The New Orleans Saints might receive a visit from the Ghost of Christmas Future this Monday.

The team officially ruled quarterback Derek Carr (left hand) out of Week 16's game against the Green Bay Packers (10-4) at Lambeau Field, paving the way for rookie Spencer Rattler to make his fourth start and first since Week 8.

With second-year running back Kendre Miller expected to receive a heavy workload due to Alvin Kamara's absence (groin), the two young Saints could give New Orleans a glimpse into its future.

Last Sunday, Rattler had his best performance of the season in relief of Jake Haener in a 20-19 loss to the Commanders (9-5).

He led the Saints (5-9) on four second-half scoring drives after being shut out in the first half. In his three starts from Weeks 6-8, New Orleans scored on six of Rattler's 33 series.

Rattler was 10-of-21 for 135 yards and one touchdown. Perhaps most importantly, he avoided being sacked after taking 14 sacks in his first three starts.

Rattler spoke about his development since his first stint as a starter and listed a couple of factors.

"Different coach, a lot of injuries. A lot of missing pieces. That was a big part of it," Rattler said, via NewOrleans.Football.

The Saints fired former head coach Dennis Allen after they fell to 2-7 following a Week 9 loss to the Panthers (3-11). In five games under interim head coach Darren Rizzi, the Saints are 3-2.

New Orleans was also hit hard by the injury bug midseason. While New Orleans is missing wideouts Chris Olave (concussion) and Rashid Shaheed (knee), it's gotten healthier along the offensive line.

Guards Lucas Patrick, Cesar Ruiz and center Erik McCoy are among the Saints linemen to return in recent weeks.

"Having guys back makes it a lot better," Rattler said.

Miller is another one of those guys. This season, he has 28 carries, 130 yards (4.6 yards per carry) and one touchdown.

Due to injury, Miller has appeared in only 12 career games, but he has shown explosiveness when available.

Here he is as a rookie last season against New England, taking a swing pass at the line of scrimmage, turning up field and accelerating for a 33-yard gain.

He showed similar quickness on this 17-yard gain last Sunday against the Commanders.

In the All-22 footage below from Sunday's game (second play), you can see the massive lane the Saints offensive line gave him to run through.

Miller is also a physical runner, as he showed on an eight-yard touchdown run in Week 14 against the Giants. He was met by Giants defenders at New York's 6-yard line, kept the pile moving and pushed his way into the end zone.

Miller could use an impressive finish to earn a larger role as the Saints' No. 2 back next season. Kamara, 29, recently signed a two-year extension, but Miller, 22, could position himself as New Orleans' next lead back.

Meanwhile, the Saints have a contract decision on Carr, who is owed $30 million (injury guaranteed) if he's on New Orleans' roster on the third day of the 2025 league year (March 14, 2025).

Rattler could make the team's decision easier with a strong end to the season.

We'll see a lot of Rattler and Miller on Monday, and their performances will determine how much we see them thereafter.
