Saints coach Dennis Allen did not expand on the reason for the swap, but confirmed the benching took place. “I think they got him a couple times with his eyes,” Allen said. “So I just felt like it was the right move for our team.” Taylor's benching was part of a rough performance from the Saints' secondary.

Also, a big rumor going on around that Alontae Taylor might don't be a Saints next year!

I am very disappointed of the New Orleans Saints defense right now. We started the season having a great defense and now in the end of the season they are playing super trash :(

Blake Grupe Cannot Be Trusted In Week 16

New Orleans Saints kicker Blake Grupe rebounded in Week 15 against the New York Giants. Grupe was a perfect 3-for-3 on extra points and drilled his lone field goal attempt from 50 yards out. Grupe and the Saints are set to take on the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night. While Grupe has not been awful, he has not been great for fantasy purposes and has only attempted two field goals over the past three weeks. The lack of opportunity should prompt fantasy managers to look elsewhere in the playoff semifinals despite the fact that the Rams have allowed the ninth-most fantasy points per game to opposing kickers.

Keep reading below to see the playoff scenarios for the Saints entering Sunday of Week 15. And head over to PFN’s free NFL Playoff Predictor to test various scenarios and see how they change the playoff picture.

What Are the New Orleans Saints’ Playoff Chances in 2023?
It is not usual for a team sitting third in the division to have a greater than 30% chance of winning the division, but that is the case for the Saints, according to ESPN’s Football Power Index (FPI). Entering Week 15, the Saints’ chances of making the playoffs reside at 42%, with their chances of winning the division sitting at 33.5%.

The NFC South could not be more evenly poised right now. ESPN’s FPI gives the Buccaneers the best chance in the division, but even then, we are talking just 35.5%, with the Falcons at 31.1%. The way the remaining games shape up, there are a number of intriguing scenarios for how the division and NFC Wild Card picture could play out in the last four weeks.

What Are the Saints’ Playoff Scenarios for Week 15?
Due to the Saints still having games remaining against both the Buccaneers and Falcons, they control their own destiny. Win out, and the division is theirs. Victory over the Buccaneers and Falcons will ensure that neither team can match New Orleans, assuming they do not lose in the next two weeks.

If the Saints drop one of their next two, then we start to enter the world of the NFL playoff tiebreakers. As things stand in Week 15, the Saints are third in the division because they lost the first meetings against both the Falcons and Buccaneers. Therefore, realistically, at a minimum, the Saints need to beat Tampa Bay and Atlanta in the final two weeks.

If New Orleans loses either of those games, it will make it very hard to come out on top in any tiebreaker scenario. Either they will be hurt by a head-to-head sweep, or it will be damning in terms of their division record, which already sits at 2-2 and would be, at best, 3-3 with a loss in either of those games.

The Saints could, in theory, go 2-2 down the stretch with both wins coming in those last two weeks and still make the playoffs. They would need some help and things to break their way in the tiebreakers, but New Orleans will enter Week 17 with a chance to win the division regardless of what happens in the next two weeks.

MORE: New Orleans Saints Depth Chart

Ideally, the Saints would like to open up some breathing room by winning this week and seeing both the Buccaneers and Falcons lose. That would shoot them to the top of the division and give them some margin for error in Week 16. However, it would not change the importance of those final two games.

Additionally, the best-case scenario for the Saints would see the Los Angeles Rams and Seattle Seahawks lose in Week 15. That would help them in the event they miss out on the division and need a Wild Card spot to make the playoffs.

Even then, they would probably still need to go at least 2-1 down the stretch, especially with a game against the Rams looming in Week 16. The Minnesota Vikings’ loss on Saturday has positives and negatives for the Saints.

Yes, it keeps another spot in the mix, but Minnesota has a head-to-head tiebreaker over the Saints which could count against them in certain scenarios.

The worst-case scenario for the Saints this week could see them a game back from both the NFC South and the NFC Wild Card standings. If they lose, they are guaranteed to be at least a half-game back from one or both, with the Buccaneers and Green Bay Packers facing each other in Week 15.

With losses on the card against both the Vikings and the Packers, the Saints could all but eliminate themselves from the Wild Card picture if they lose to the New York Giants in Week 15 and then back that up with a loss to the Rams in Week 16. There would be too many head-to-head losses piling up against them at that point.

When Could the Saints Clinch the NFC South?

The Saints’ season finishing with the Buccaneers and Falcons in back-to-back weeks has its pros and cons. On the one hand, it means they are guaranteed to remain alive in the playoff picture entering Week 17. However, the counter is that they cannot clinch the division until Week 17, either.

Even if the Saints go 2-0 in Weeks 15 and 16, and the Buccaneers and Falcons go 0-2, the division will be alive entering Week 17. The Saints’ earlier losses to the Falcons and Buccaneers mean that two losses to their divisional opponents could see the division snatched from their grasp in Week 18 if results go against them elsewhere.

12/14/2023

How long will it take for Mickey Loomis & Ms. Gayle Benson can take with Dennis Allen poor performance for two years now and it hard to ignore!

Who is going to be coaching the New Orleans Saints in 2024? Could Dennis Allen return after struggling to reach (much less hold on to) a winning record in either of his two years as their head coach?

That’s no sure thing, but some recent scuttlebutt suggests the Saints are at least hesitant to consider making a move from Allen just yet. The latest buzz comes from ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, who shared what he’s hearing in a back-and-forth with his colleague Dan Graziano:

“I don’t think the Saints want to make a change on Dennis Allen, but another losing season would mark two in a row, which wasn’t the norm in the Sean Payton era (though he did have a stretch of three consecutive 7-9 seasons from 2014 to ’16). It still needs to be seen how much grace New Orleans’ front office and ownership is willing to apply.”

Honestly, it’s odd that the situations would be compared; Payton earned his goodwill with a Super Bowl XLIV championship and a record-setting run with Drew Brees, helping the quarterback not just reinvent himself after a career-threatening injury but build a Hall of Fame resume.

Allen fixed Rob Ryan’s mess of a defense, which was no mean feat. Then he developed it into an elite unit. That was enough to give general manager Mickey Loomis and team president Dennis Lauscha the confidence to back Gayle Benson’s decision to hire him despite his historically poor run as a head coach a decade earlier with the Raiders. But when you look at the Saints’ fortunes since Allen was promoted to head coach, there’s little logic behind sticking with him.

An admittedly injury-ridden Saints team limped out of their Week 14 bye last year with a 4-9 record. They gave Allen free rein to recruit Derek Carr, investing $60 million guaranteed in a passer whose last team ditched him and whose free agency experience was lukewarm at best. What does Allen have to show for it a year later? The Saints are coming out of Week 14 with a 6-7 record. They’ve improved by just two wins.

There’s no valid reason to stick with Allen. His defense — his defense, the unit he’s drafted and developed and filled with veteran free agents — is eroding by the week. What was supposed to be the strength of the team has allowed the seventh-most rushing yards and tied for the third-fewest sacks in the NFL this season. They can’t stop the run or rush the passer. Allen’s offense still can’t score points between Carr panicking in the red zone and rookie kicker Blake Grupe shanking 29-yard field goals. Visiting fans are taking over the lower bowl in the Caesars Superdome, and Carr is being met with boos whenever he jogs off the field after another stalled-out drive. The team is in a bad place even after a lopsided (yet unconvincing) win over a division rival last Sunday.

So, we’ve got two reasons for the Saints to keep Allen. In the first scenario, they’ll outlast their rivals in the NFC South and win the division to host a home playoff game (likely against a Super Bowl contender like the Dallas Cowboys), which likely won’t go well. It’ll also drop their first-round pick in the 2024 NFL draft away from the best prospects, which could be devastating when bad trades from Loomis cost them their second-, third- and fourth-round picks. But Loomis can say, they did reach the postseason after falling short last year. And that’s tangible progress.

What if the Saints miss the playoffs and still keep Allen? That’s when the excuses might start rushing out: injuries to star players like Michael Thomas and Marshon Lattimore (just like last year) plus Carr, who is valiantly playing through a sprained throwing shoulder, three injured ribs and two concussions. That’s an easy way to wave off his poor performance this season.

The rebuttal to that is the Saints having the healthiest roster in the league through the first 10 weeks and still idling at 5-5 before the injuries hit. But if the team leadership group has seen Allen’s team get worse by the week and find new ways to lose football games into mid-December, odds are strong that Benson, Loomis and Lauscha aren’t going to acknowledge that criticism in January. It would take something drastic to convince them that hiring Allen and committing harder to his vision for the team was the wrong move.

Allen is two years into his four-year contract. Carr’s heaviest guarantees extend into 2024. Maybe the plan all along has been to give Allen those two years with his quarterback and see if he can make something happen before kickstarting a reboot in 2025 (maybe without Loomis, the longest-tenured general manager in the NFL) once the salary cap has skyrocketed to wipe out years of financial maneuvering and cost deferments. All fans can do is stand by, see how this all plays out, and hope the team gives them a product worth cheering for.

Saints get mixed bag of Derek Carr, Chris Olave injury updates!

The New Orleans Saints find themselves in the thick of the NFC South race as one of three 6-7 teams in the division with four weeks left in the regular season. Health goes a long way in preserving a team’s playoff hopes this time of year and the Saints have dealt with plenty of injuries over the last couple of weeks.

This week is no exception, although they did get very good news regarding the status of quarterback Derek Carr. Saints head coach Dennis Allen said that Carr is doing well health wise and the veteran QB is off of the week’s initial injury report, per Katherine Terrell.

Carr has been banged up virtually all season and was limited in practice last week before getting in full reps on Friday. In addition to multiple concussions, Carr also sprained his AC joint and fractured three ribs throughout the season.
Despite all of that he has yet to miss a game, starting all 13 so far in his first season in New Orleans. That’s a good way to endear yourself to a city, though Carr’s play hasn’t exactly wowed Saints fans.

The four-time Pro Bowl QB averages 221.5 passing yards per game along with 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions. His 89.4 passer rating ranks 17th among qualified quarterbacks.

On the other side of injury news, star wide receiver Chris Olave missed Wednesday’s practice with an ankle injury, per Erin Summers. It’s the third consecutive week Olave has landed on the injury report after dealing with an illness and a concussion over the last few weeks.

Just as Carr has, Olave hasn’t missed a game this season. He leads the Saints in every receiving category and is 72 yards away from his second consecutive 1,000-yard season to begin his career. He’ll have two more days to practice in some sort of capacity.

Other Saints injury news!

Olave is just one of ten Saints players on their first injury report of Week 15. Among the other nine, three did not practice on Wednesday while six were limited with various injuries.

Tight end Taysom Hill returned to practice after missing last week’s game with injuries to his foot and left hand. Wide receiver Rashid Shaheed also practiced in limited fashion with a thigh injury that kept him out of the Saints’ Week 14-win last Sunday.

On the defensive side of the ball, Cameron Jordan was limited with an ankle injury, while fellow defensive end Isaiah Foskey missed practice as he deals with a quad ailment.

The Saints will need all hands-on deck for the rest of the season as their margin for error is slim to none. These next two games will determine whether New Orleans will remain in the hunt for the NFC South crown with two divisional battles against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Atlanta Falcons on the docket to end the season.

The Saints currently sit in third place behind the Bucs and Falcons after losing their first matchup to each team. New Orleans hosts the New York Giants this week who have suddenly entered the NFC playoff race with three consecutive wins.

Pelicans' Zion Williamson responds to Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley criticism about conditioning, effort!

Following the Pelicans' blowout loss to the Lakers in the Semifinals of the NBA In-Season Tournament, there was no shortage of criticism toward the New Orleans franchise. Zion Williamson received the brunt of it.

Immediately after the game, TNT's Charles Barkley and Shaquille O'Neal questioned Williamson's conditioning, effort and motivation as he scored just 13 points and was a minus-33 in the box score in the Pelicans' 44-point loss. Four nights later, Williamson responded both on and off the floor.

With the Pelicans back at home hosting the West-leading Timberwolves, Williamson delivered one of his best performances of the year, scoring a season-high 36 points (on 13-of-17 shooting) to lead New Orleans to an impressive 14-point win. Following the game, he was asked about the criticism he's recently received.
"What exactly did they say?" Williamson asked in response to a question of whether or not the Hall of Famers' commentary was legitimate.

When informed it was about conditioning, Williamson responded: "If it comes from a great place and a place where they just want to see me do better — thank you. But if it comes from anywhere else, everyone's entitled to their own opinion. You can't control that."

In response to a follow-up, Williamson simply stated, "At the end of the day, I can't control what no grown man does. I can't control what no grown adult does. All I can do is control the things I can control, lock in on myself, lock in on my teammates, coaches and everybody with Pelicans, the city and try to win."

Williamson's performance was a resounding response to the criticism as it came against the Timberwolves, owners of the NBA's top-rated defense and best record. His 36 points were a break from a miniature slump in which he was held under 15 points in three of New Orleans' previous four games.

Over 20 games this season, Williamson is averaging 22.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists while shooting 58.4 percent from the field. Based on their comments, it appears that both O'Neal and Barkley just want to see the 23-year-old reach his full potential.

What did Shaquille O'Neal say about Zion Williamson?
After the In-Season Tournament Semifinal, O'Neal shared that he sees a lot of himself in Williamson. He made a few points as a plea to see more from the Pelicans' big man.

I want to make some points about Zion. He does not run hard — it's not a diss, this is going to be a lesson from one great big man to another guy that can be a great big man. I had the same problem my first and second year. I thought I was running hard, cause Charles (Barkley) talked about this — my talent is gonna get me 20 [points]. But when I start going to 20, 30 and 40 [points], it's because I started doing certain things.

He doesn't create easy points for himself. I saw a couple of times, he had a couple guys at the basket — he doesn't seal. He doesn't demand the ball. If you've got a small guy on you, we talk about it all the time — 'barbecue chicken alert' — Charles talks about it all the time, you can't let a little guard you. And he doesn't have that look.

Like, I'm not the greatest athlete ever but I know a look when I see it. In every sport I know a look. Tiger Woods had that look, Jack Nicholson had that look. He just doesn't have that look and he doesn't rebound. I'm sitting there and I'm watching. Charles is on him because that's Charles' category, I don't want to be on him that hard but he's not rebounding.

I was just like him — I was just like that. People used to pull me to the side … once he decides to get that killer and go for it, he's going to be a dangerous man.

What did Charles Barkley say about Zion Williamson?
While Barkley insinuated that Williamson was overweight and lazy, he, too, compared the Pelicans star to a younger version of himself. His biggest point was that Williamson should undeniably be New Orleans' best player, but he currently shares the spotlight with Brandon Ingram and CJ McCollum.

The thing that disturbs me is — he's not a young kid. When Moses (Malone) told me I was fat and lazy, I was a rookie. He's been in the league long enough — he's got two guys on his team that are better players than him and they shouldn't be

He was the No. 1 pick in the draft, he should be a better player than Ingram — we like Ingram, obviously and we love CJ (McCollum) — he should be the best player, and he's not even close.

No. 1, he's gotta get in shape. I told you, I've been very disappointed — he's averaging six rebounds a game. He's only had two double-doubles all season. Man, if my grandmother was alive — she used to call me after every game that I didn't get double-figure rebounds and just kill me. A big guy that talented should never get less than 10 rebounds — he should be averaging 11 or 12 rebounds per game.

But he doesn't run the floor at all — when you actually watch the game — now the Pelicans deserve some blame, they've got him playing point forward, but he can't play point forward because he doesn't move the ball enough. He doesn't run hard enough, and they don't go up and down fast enough. He should be a finisher, not a starter.

Saints Signing RB James Robinson!

According to Aaron Wilson, the Saints plan to sign RB James Robinson to a contract.

He was one of four running backs to work out with the team today.

Robinson, 25, wound up going undrafted out of Illinois State in 2020. He made the team’s 53-man roster and was named their starting running back. Robinson then went on to break the record for most scrimmage yards by an undrafted rookie.

The Jaguars traded Robinson to the Jets midseason in 2022 for a sixth-round pick. New York declined to tender him as a restricted free agent, and he signed a two-year deal with the Patriots.

New England opted to release Robinson and he caught on with the Giants in August. He was released a few weeks later before signing on with the Packers for a stint.
In 2022, Robinson appeared in 11 games for the Jaguars and Jets, rushing for 425 yards on 110 carries (3.9 YPC) to go along with 11 receptions for 51 yards receiving and five total touchdowns.

The Heat Is Turning Up on Zion Williamson!

The NBA’s in-season tournament shined a somewhat brighter spotlight on players than is typical for this part of the regular season.

Tyrese Haliburton, for example, played in his first game televised by TNT and may have ascended into a new level of stardom thanks to his exciting style of play that led the Pacers to the championship round.

Zion Williamson, on the other hand, is currently experiencing the negative consequences of not showing up in a big moment.

Williamson and the Pelicans were thoroughly trounced by the Lakers in the semifinals, with Zion collecting only 13 points, two rebounds and three assists in a whopping 44-point loss. After the dispiriting effort, Williamson was criticized from every corner.
First from Shaquille O’Neal: “I had the same problem my first and second year. I thought I was running hard,” O’Neal said on TNT after the game. “Because my talent’s going to get me 20 [points]. When I started getting to 30–40, it’s because I started doing certain things. … He doesn’t create easy points for himself. … He doesn’t demand the ball. … He doesn’t have that look like, ‘I’m the greatest ever.’ I know a look when I see it.”

Then Times-Picayune Pelicans reporter Christian Clark cited team sources who said the team has “repeatedly stressed” to Williamson that his conditioning needs to improve, but he “doesn’t listen.”

And finally, Zion’s former teammate JJ Redick also offered a strong critique on ESPN, saying, “He’s still not in shape despite everything that he’s gone through, despite numerous conversations with legends of the game about being in shape.” He added that Williamson “has not bought into his own career yet.”

Zion has absolutely shown stretches of dominance during his NBA career. And his stats are nothing to scoff at—22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.8 assists a night would be solid for many players. Except Williamson is not one of many. He entered the league with massive expectations. Injuries have absolutely played a significant role in his difficulty to stay in an elite stratosphere—he’s played more than 30 games only once before this season and even missed an entire year.

But Williamson is now in his fifth year as a pro. The injuries may not be under his control. The conditioning most certainly is. And seemingly everyone from the front office to legendary players to former teammates is identifying it as a problem. How much longer is Zion going to let this narrative be a part of his career? He’s too talented to let conditioning be the defining aspect of him as a player and has too much potential to let it go to waste over something like this.

To Zion’s credit, he admitted he needed to be better after the semifinal loss. And in the offseason, at least, Pelicans president David Griffin commended Williamson for taking care of his body better than he had in the past. I don’t think WIlliamson is putting zero effort into this problem. But, especially knowing the heights his game has reached at times, it’s certainly fair to question whether that effort is consistent enough.

This isn’t important only for WIlliamson; it’s also important for the Pelicans. New Orleans has a talented team that’s handcuffed by counting on Zion. And so far this year, the mix of Williamson, CJ McCollum and Brandon Ingram hasn’t been good, with the Pelicans sporting a minus-10.3 net rating when those three share the floor. Zion’s name was floated during trade rumors around draft time. At what point should New Orleans seriously consider going back down that road, especially with all the other talent on its roster?

These thoughts and questions are thorny and uncomfortable. But they are the result of years of Zion thriving only in fits and starts. With the expectations growing for what the Pelicans can accomplish, Williamson can no longer hide what’s been a disappointing season. And the only way for him to turn down the noise is to make sure he’s exhibited a commitment to being the best possible version of himself the next time the spotlight comes back around.
