dogs reacting to their environment is NORMAL, and not something we should view as abnormal or bad. what can be bad is when their reactions are not appropriate relative to the situation and/or are damaging to their overall wellbeing and livelihood. rudder was attacked by a large on-leash husky in our apartment building when he was a puppy, so he gets nervous when large dogs (especially with uppy ears) stare him down or do stalking behavior toward him. i’d say that’s a fair reaction! i’m not gonna get upset at him for reacting that way. i’ve done A LOT of work with him over the years to rebuild his confidence. he’s come a loooong way, but he has a right to feel the way he feels. my job is to help him through it and try to set him up for success. i’m really proud of how far he has come. dogs are sentient beings with feelings of their own. give them (and yourself!) some grace. if you feel your dog’s reactions to its environment are not appropriate or are interfering with their wellbeing, i encourage you to seek the help of a trainer. [for context: if rudder had been off leash, he would have been fine. he would have shown submissive body language and retreated to me. same thing if we had more space — he either would have tucked his tail and moved away or walked by and avoided eye contact with the dog. it’s the situations where he’s stuck in a tight space with a threatening dog where he still struggles, and i don’t blame him for it. his recovery time is REALLY fast now and i try to make it fun and seem like no big deal!]
