The Bayon temple is the largest and richly decorated Khmer temple in Cambodia that was built in the late 12th or early 13th century. The temple features 216 serene and smiling stone faces on its many towers around the central peak. Scholars believe that the faces are associated with Buddha or the Hindu god Brahma or King Jayavarman VII. The temple is an architectural masterpiece that tells enduring tales of Cambodian history and legends.

The woman who made Cambodia!

While, King Jayavarman VII, is known as the most powerful Khmer monarch who ruled during the height of Cambodia’s Angkorean empire, there was a great female leader long before Jayavarman was even born. The first leader during the Funan era in Cambodia, which began around 613 AD, was a woman named Nagi Soma, daughter of the chieftain of the local Naga (serpent) clan. During her leadership, national unity was strong and the strength of her dynasty was known around Asia. Queen Soma was married to Kaundinya, an Indian warrior-prince from Kalinga, a historical region of India. The couple were later known as Preah Thong (Kaundinya) and Neang Neak (Queen Soma) and are symbolic personas in Cambodia's Khmer culture. Hence one can witness the mixture of both Indian and Cambodia's indigenous people, cultures, traditions in ancient architecture, rituals, ceremonies, etc., in present-day Cambodia.

The dancing female deities known as 'apsaras' (in Sanskrit, meaning the female spirit of the clouds and waters in Hindu and Buddhist culture) were the first beings to emerge from the sea of creation.

In this visual, a dancer in a traditional dress is seen performing 'apsara dance' (where gestures are codified to narrate classical stories), and an illustration of the entrance gate of Angkor Thom and the statues depicting Samudra Manthana i.e., churning of the ocean of milk can be seen in the background.

Churning of the ocean of milk…

Statues depicting a line of 54 guardian deities or ‘devas‘ holding the head of the serpent ‘naga‘ on one side of the causeway, while a line of 54 demons ‘asuras‘ hold the tail of the serpent on the other side of the causeway — leading to the southern gate of Angkot Thom, i.e., Great City in Cambodia.

Welcome to ‘This is Cambodia’ a virtual journey seen through the eyes of Shravan Regret Iyer

This is the southern entrance gate to Angkor Thom (meaning Great City) located in Siem Reap, Cambodia. This ancient city was established in the late twelfth century and covers an area of around nine square kilometers. The city lies on the West bank of the Siem Reap river and was abandoned in the early 15th century and believe to have sustained a population of 80,000–150,000 people.

The faces on the 23m towers at the city entrance gates are believed to be either those of King Jayavarman Vll, bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara, guardians of the empire’s cardinal points, or some combination of these.

Shravan Regret Iyer’s Project 3 Lenses (Wildlife, Wild Places, and Human Journey) – Celebrating 4 years

In 2017 on World Environment Day (June 5), we (Regret Iyer Productions) invited you to be part of the virtual journey to explore the breathtaking wilds of the Himalayas (‘Life in the Himalayas’). In the following years, we continued our virtual explorations (‘Bhutan, the last Shangri La’; ‘This is America’ and ‘One Earth’ visual series).

To celebrate our four years of virtual exploration, we invite you to another epic adventure, this time in the wilds of the Kingdom of Cambodia. In this virtual journey, we will explore, the country’s unique biodiversity, lifestyle, and architecture – including one of the world’s most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, a 12th century Temple city inside a 400 sq km of Angkor Archaeological Park nestled in the forests of Cambodia, also a UNESCO world heritage site.
