Happy Memorial Day!!

Did you know that it was called Decoration Day starting on May 30th, 1868, started by Union General John A. Logan who codified the holiday by decorating the graves of fallen soldiers from the Civil War?

Also, Memorial Day was celebrated on the last Monday of the month until 1971 after the Uniform Monday Holiday Act took effect. The red poppy tradition of honoring fallen soldiers comes from a Canadian poem written during WWI.

In America, flags are flown half-staff till noon. And Congress passed a law in 2000 that at 3pm that all American’s stop what we are doing to take a minute of silence to honor the fallen soldiers on Memorial Day.

Did you know that the holiday Cinco de Mayo is about the victory of the Mexican army defeating the French army on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla?

Fun facts about Cinco de Mayo:

1. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day, that falls on September 16th.
2. The victory at the Battle of Pueblo was short lived.
3. The US celebrates Cinco de Mayo more than Mexico; it is really only celebrated in Pueblo & Veracruz by the locals.
4. In 1933, Franklin D. Roosevelt commercialized Cinco de Mayo to improve relations with Latin America.
5. More avocadoes are consumed on May 5th than on any other day of the year.
6. In 2005, the US declared Cinco de Mayo an official US holiday.

Tip #14 Use points & miles for FREE airfare!

Booking airfare can sometimes be a bigger cost than anticipated. One way to get around that is to have a credit card that you use every day and pay off every month to give you the best options for airfare. There are many options available depending on your needs and how you spend money.

If you don’t travel overseas as much then getting a credit card more like Southwest is great for domestic flights or a very limited overseas location. If you want to visit more places like Asia or Europe, find a credit card like AMEX or Chase Sapphire. These cards give you a lot of perks and more airline options to choose from. Then there are cards where you can build up loyalty points with the airlines as well as points on your credit card like the American Express Delta Card or Citi American Airlines Advantage Card.

Regardless of whatever card you decide on, having a credit card that works for you is a MUST!!
