I remember Catherine telling me that she had repeatedly asked her dad, David Jesse Shumaker, to write for her an accounting of his trip from Indiana to Florida in a covered wagon. But I don’t remember ever hearing the true story that he wrote, I TRAVELED FROM INDIANA FROM FLORIDA IN A COVERED WAG....

READ XANDRA'S NEW ORLEANS STORY -

When I think of New Orleans food, I think of Brunch.

I grew up about 100 miles from New Orleans, which is where my parents are from. So I’ve been there many times visiting family, and also have lots of friends there.

Did I say that brunch is a really big deal in New Orleans?

Especially on Sundays.

I could not spend a weekend with a relative or friend there without being served a nice brunch.

For brunch, a person does not crawl out of bed and drag themselves to the kitchen (as is my usual MO on a typical weekday morning). No, we are expected to be awake and alert and dressed up for New Orleans Brunch!

So one weekend we were at my grandma and granddad’s house for a family reunion. It was Sunday morning, and the big event had been the day before. I knew that Grandpa would be serving a nice brunch today, as he always did when I was visiting.

I was awakened by the voices of lots of my relatives. They were all down in the kitchen in a good-natured discussion about whose Eggs Benedict was the best!

We were in Tuscany, one of the most beautiful places on this earth.

Have you ever been there?

If no, go if you get the chance.

If yes, go again.

We were staying in Florence at a small family-owned hotel, Albergo Bonifacci. The hotel guests were served dinner with the Bonifacci family most evenings, but Mama Bonifacci didn't cook on Saturdays or Sundays.

And it was an absolutely perfectly beautiful Saturday in Tuscany.

We spent the day buzzing around like wasps.

Did you know that "Wasp" in Italian is "Vespa"?

Yes, we were touring the gently rolling hills in the heart of Chianti just south of Florence on the iconic Italian motor scooters.

Mine was pink.
