Napa Valley was not unfamiliar to this millennial, or at least not the city of Napa. The movie “The Parent Trap” was constantly playing on the Disney Channel back when I lived in Mexico as a child. I was familiar with Napa at an early age all thanks to Lindsay Lohan’s characters, Annie and Hallie, and their father Nick Parker, played by Dennis Quaid. I also knew some of the sights of San Francisco from watching The Princess Diaries. It has been a dream to live in the places where these movies take place. I never imagined in a million years that I would end up here.

What the movies do not tell you though is that living in California is expensive. Being an adult is expensive. But the high costs never scared me. My friends think that I am crazy for moving here from Texas. I have had Californians ask me “You moved, WHY?!”  And my answer is simple, I am a young, single, pet-free, free-spirited woman who craves experiences, likes to live life to the fullest and seeks change. California offered me an opportunity to experience something new and with that, some of the most fun and best years of my life so far.

Lately, I’ve noticed that many of my millennial California friends are not as adventurous as me – and maybe more financially responsible than me. I was raised by a father who believes in having a good time while we are still here on this earth. I always think, “If I die tomorrow, I might as well die happy.”

I’ve had lunch at in St. Helena and had ice cream at St. Helena’s too. I had drinks at in Napa and ate a savory pie at , also in Napa. I guess what I am trying to say is, if you have a chance, my advice is you go out,  eat the sandwich and you can have the drink.

I am excited to see what new places I will frequent and what new drinks I will try. Because as long as I’m alive, I plan to enjoy life.

“When you break a piece of pottery, you put it back together with the gold and the idea of it is you’re embracing the imperfections, the beauty is in the flaws. And so I think that was one of my favorite parts about my costume. Not only was it so relevant, uh, to me and my work and what I do, but like the whole story of Kintsugi, the idea of Kintsugi, is something that more people need to bring out,” she said.

“Cuando rompes una pieza de cerámica, la vuelves a juntar con el oro y la idea es que estás abrazando las imperfecciones, la belleza está en los defectos. Y creo que esa fue una de mis partes favoritas de mi disfraz. No solo fue tan relevante, eh, para mí y mi trabajo y lo que hago, sino que como toda la historia de Kintsugi, la idea de Kintsugi, es algo que más gente necesita sacar a relucir”, dijo.

As the affordable housing discussion looms large, a segment of potential homeowners who don’t typically make headlines are left behind: moderate- and above-moderate-income households, sometimes referred to as the “missing middle.”
——
Magali Garcia and Christian Escobedo, both raised and employed in Calistoga, moved to Napa in 2020.
Not by choice, but by necessity.
The young married couple with children aspired to become homeowners. But as they looked for a modestly-priced home in the city where they lived and worked, their dreams quickly faded.
Garcia, 29, and Escobedo, who met while working at luxury spa and resort Indian Springs Calistoga, fell in love and started a family, hoping to remain in their hometown.
The housing market ultimately forced them out.
Faced with limited housing options, competing with cash bidders, rapidly inflating prices and the influx of vacation home buyers from outside the area, they found they could not compete in the Calistoga market.
“Growing up in Calistoga you envision your life being there,” Escobedo said. “You love the community; you love the town, but then you reach a point where, realistically, it’s almost impossible to own a home in Calistoga unless you are making considerable amounts of money, and at the same time you are getting outbid by people who have the cash on hand.”
The median list price for a typical two-bedroom, two-bath home in Calistoga exceeds $1 million according to the latest Zillow data.

Four Latino winemakers Luies Gallegos, from Surcos Wines, Salvador De La Cruz, Ludor Wine, Victor Mendoza, Suspiro Wines and Roberto Alfaro, Arador Wines, led a panel and a tasting of wines paired with Mexican cuisine. The Sauvignon Blanc was paired with pico de gallo, a rosé with a spicy guacamole, Pinot Noir with queso fresco and Merlot with refried beans.

Mendoza added working in the Napa area is something he feels proud of, because of the world- wide recognition the valley has. But being a Latino winemaker in Napa adds to this pride. “Those in the audience should be proud too,” he said.

“You are putting the Napa area up high,” Alfaro said. “The pride is not just for us but for all of you too.”

Mendoza said the world maybe is realizing how talented Mexicans can be.

“Los Mexicanos somos chingones,” he said. And with those words, a round of applause erupted.

While local leaders across different municipalities have no jurisdiction over the reproductive services offered in the community, said Napa County Board of Supervisors

Joelle Gallagher, it’s a matter of freedom. “We all should enjoy the freedom to decide if we do or do not wish to bear children, and when, where and how that occurs,” she said in an email. “It amounts to being anti-family, anti-parent, and anti-child.”

The Right to IVF Act would have standardized IVF and would have made IVF more affordable through funding support and possible insurance coverage. In 2024,
a single IVF cycle can cost as much as $30,000, leaving most patients forced to take out loans or pay out of pocket for the treatment.

Nearly all patients must go through more than one cycle to conceive via IVF, the most physically invasive fertility treatment available.

As an IVF mother and advocate, I fear that the failure to protect fertility treatments could bring frightening and deeply personal consequences, such as not being able to expand my own family further.

The California Highway Patrol this week said it was unable to determine fault in a July incident in which a young woman crossing the street was severely injured after being struck by a Calistoga Police vehicle.
-
Meanwhile, officials confirmed Tuesday that the driver of the vehicle that struck the 22-year-old is back on patrol following the conclusion of the investigation.
“We have received the investigation report that concluded [CHP] was unable to determine either a primary collision factor or that the officer committed a traffic violation,” Snideman told the Calistoga City Council Tuesday evening. “Therefore, there were no contributing factors in the city’s control to the accident.”
-
The Calistoga resident was walking in a crosswalk at the intersection of Washington and Berry streets when the accident occurred. She sustained multiple injuries including broken bones and traumatic brain injury and is recovering.
