Around 30 Serbian islanders stood at the Milestone Rotary Sunday to show support for students and citizens protesting against the government in their home country.

Protests have been breaking out across Serbia since the roof of a train station in the city of Novi Sad collapsed Nov. 1, 2024, killing 15 people.

Thousands of Serbian citizens, especially students, have been protesting the last two months because they say corrupt government leadership did not take proper action to prevent the disaster.

Demonstrations have continued amidst rising tensions in the country. Most recently, a woman drove her vehicle into a crowd of protestors, injuring one person.

“Students (in Serbia) have been consistent, committed, and extremely brave. The least we can do from this side of the world is send our support,” islander Ivana Stoyanov told The Inquirer and Mirror Sunday.

The Steamship Authority has added a new freight boat to its fleet. The M/V Barnstable, a former offshore supply vessel bought by the SSA to be turned into a vehicle ferry three years ago, was commissioned in Hyannis Harbor Monday.

Two more converted boats, the M/V Aquinnah and M/V Monomoy, will also be joining the fleet when they finish being retrofitted.

The ceremony Monday lasted an hour and was capped off with a christening done by the family of SSA Barnstable rep. Robert Jones.

The Barnstable will be making its maiden voyage to Nantucket today without any passengers. It has not yet finished the trials required to carry travelers or cars. It will arrive at the Nantucket SSA terminal around 2:30 p.m. Monday and self-guided tours will be available to the public for an hour.

The boat is expected to start making trips with passengers next month once trials are completed, SSA officials said. It will be replacing the decades-old M/V Gay Head, which was sold by the SSA to Harwich construction company Robert B. Our Co., Inc last week.

Harbormaster Sheila Lucey advising boaters, swimmers, surfers and beach-goers that recent erosion at Madaket Beach has exposed dangerous construction debris in the surf and shorebreak.

The area should be avoided if at all possible.

Lucey said her staff will be monitoring the beach over the winter for the presence of additional debris.

“As the season gets closer we will make some decisions about removing it if it is necessary for public safety,” she said.

“We don’t know if anything else will become exposed as the season progresses but we will stay on it.”

The debris – chunks of concrete and metal support bars – is likely from homes that were removed or damaged by heavy surf and erosion in the past.

For the last four years, Jill and Scott Kelley have been hosting State Troopers and Secret Service agents for a lunch at their Baxter Road home, near Sankaty Light.

The tradition started during Joe Biden’s first presidential visit to the island in 2021, when a scheduling snafu left some of the security team without meal plans.

“Trooper (Kevin) Bates mentioned to me that none of the men had a Thanksgiving meal planned for them and everything was closed on the island,” Jill Kelley said Sunday.

“They were forgotten, and I didn’t want it to be that way,” she said of the State Troopers and Secret Service.

The Secret Service and state police were so grateful they each presented the Kelleys a plaque with messages thanking them, which they have in their home.

“They’re really good people, and they’re so grateful,” Jill said. “People forget about them. I like to show our appreciation.”
