On November 6th, the South Carolina Forestry Commission presented the City of North Myrtle Beach with their 18 years of Tree City USA status.

Tree City USA is a program that provides communities with a four-step framework to maintain and grow their tree cover. It also gives them an avenue to celebrate their work, showing residents, visitors, and the entire country that they’re committed to the mission of environmental change. The four-step framework includes maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry, and celebrating Arbor Day. Tree City USA began in 1976 and is one of the Arbor Day Foundation’s oldest programs.

The North Myrtle Beach Tree Board was established in 2005 to manage public trees, with special concern for heritage trees (24” diameter or greater) and to advise the city in all tree-related matters. Since 2006, the city has been awarded the status of Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation. The board remains very active in fulfilling the requirements of the Tree City USA program by hosting an annual Arbor Day celebration, recognizing Earth Day, and holding various tree-related events throughout the year.

Conway Holding Dedication Ceremony for Chestnut Bay Resiliency Project
The City of Conway will hold a dedication ceremony for the Chestnut Bay Resiliency Project at Freeman Drive on November 15, 2023, at 11:00am.

Through FEMA-funded buyout of properties subject to repetitive flooding, the City removed many homes near Trinity Church. Kevin Chestnut, the City’s former Public Works Director, realized that the City owned enough contiguous parcels to construct infrastructure to hold additional flood water in the area. The existing stormwater for half of the Sherwood neighborhood is piped directly into Crabtree Canal, and Chestnut had the idea to daylight those pipes into a stormwater detention/retention area where the water will be slowed and cleaned before discharge into Crabtree or absorption into the ground. The site will also provide additional storage during flash flooding before overwhelming Crabtree.

‼ Volunteers Needed For Basket Building ‼

The City of North Myrtle Beach Parks and Recreation Department intends to build a living shoreline at the newly constructed bulkhead at the Heritage Shores Nature Preserve.

The Preserve is located near the 53rd Avenue North public boat ramp in Cherry Grove.

As a part of that effort, Keep North Myrtle Beach Beautiful is looking for volunteers to help build over one hundred wire mesh boxes to attract and retain juvenile oysters (the photo is courtesy of DNR and is an example of the wire mesh boxes). Juvenile oysters help encourage the re-establishment of the natural environment by filtering harmful pollutants from the water. One juvenile oyster can filter about 2.5 gallons of water in an hour.

Volunteers will assist in building basket structures during the months of December 2023 through February 2024. Those baskets will be transported to the preserve for installation in late April 2024. This call for volunteers is to help build and oversee the basket building effort and/or to recruit and instruct additional volunteers.

The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources will conduct an introductory training session from 1 PM to 4 PM on November 28, 2023 at the NMB Parks and Sports Complex.

For further details or to register and confirm your participation, please contact Megan Petit at [email protected] or by phone at 843-281-3732 by November 21, 2023.

‼ Installation of Underground Utilities ‼

On Monday, November 13, the City of North Myrtle Beach will begin installing traffic control/detour signs. This is in preparation for the City's Utility Relocation Plan along North Ocean Boulevard from 29th Avenue North to 34th Avenue North. Construction will begin within 10 days of installing the traffic control/detour signs.

This project will consist of converting overhead electrical and communications wiring to an underground conduit system; then, removing the overhead wiring and power poles. Similar conversion projects have been accomplished throughout the City with positive results.

Please be advised, drivers may experience delays, lane closures, and detours as the project progresses along North Ocean Boulevard from 29th Avenue North to 34th Avenue North.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience.
