If everything in your life is going well, you may feel some level of contentment, but what about when you're in a place where you don't want to be, enduring some sort of pain or problem that you most certainly don't want ... whether it's physical, mental, or emotional (or all three of them hitting at once) ... I can tell you from first-hand experience, it's a real challenge to be content in those times. In fact, it can feel impossible.

Contentment is only found by having faith in Christ and it's only truly learned in the hard times ... you have to go through some pain, suffering, disappointment, loss, heartache, anxiety, etc.
Your comfort-zone won't transform you!

We humans are constantly talking to ourselves because this is how we try to make sense of the world, relationships, work, God, faith, pain, stress, etc. It’s how we try to figure out the best way to cope and navigate through life. You may not realize it, but you’ve been talking to yourself all day, but what have you been saying to yourself ... Is it true, godly, positive, and healthy? Or is it false, ungodly, negative, and unhealthy? The Bible says we "reap what we sow" ... and that "sowing" begins with our thoughts (aka = our inner self-talk). If you want a life of freedom, growth, transformation, and impact ... then you better start working on your inner self-talk.

On this episode, we wrap up our series from J.C. Ryle's outstanding book, "Thoughts for Young Men." Specifically, we'll be looking at Part 4 of the book where he gives what he calls, "Special Rules for Young Men" .... and he gives 5 of them.

By God's help he tells young men to do the following ...

1. Break off every known sin.

2. Shun everything which may be an opportunity to sin.

3. Resolve to never forget the all-seeing eye of God.

4. Be diligent in the practice of your Christianity.

5. Resolve that wherever you are, you will pray.

As I've said before my brothers, these words from J.C. Ryle are gold, precious stones that will keep you from many painful consequences and open up a world of blessings upon your life, marriage, family, friendships, career, ministry, etc.

Do not blow off what you hear from Pastor J.C. Ryle.

As usual, I make a few comments of my own along the way as we go through this last section of the book.

5. To determine as long as you live to make the Bible your constant guide and adviser.

6. To be extremely careful who you choose as close friends.

On this episode I share a little of what's been going down with me lately, and then we continue our study in Proverbs chapter 5. I specifically focus on verse 9 where God provides some sobering warnings of what sexual sin will do to our lives.

God is not anti-sex or sexual pleasure. On the contrary, He wants us to enjoy sexual pleasure, but He wants the fire to be kept inside the fireplace ... and that fireplace is marriage. When we take the fire outside the fireplace, we burn the house down!

We cry out to God, “Why is this happening to me? Why me? Save me! Deliver me! Take this away from me!”
Pain and suffering ...
Why do we deal with it?
And what should we do in the midst of it?
There are three reasons why we go through pain and suffering:
1. It's your fault! (Sowing and Reaping)
2. Welcome to the Planet!
3. God is Purging, Purifying, Preparing!
Stop turning to sinful things to try and medicate your pain and suffering. Learn to turn to better things!

So over the last week, I've been studying James chapter 4, verses 7-10. That's what we dig into for this episode. If I had to sum up the main point of this particular passage I would say it's a description of what it really looks like for a man to leave sin for God.

📖 There are seven clear commands we need to obey ...

1. Be subject therefore to God.

2. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

3. Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.

4. Cleanse your hands, you sinnners.

5. Purify your hearts, you double-minded.

6. Be miserable and mourn and weep, let your laughter be turned into mourning and your joy to gloom.

7. Humble yourselves in the presence of the Lord, and He will exalt you.
