Attention residents of Newton County: Because of our recent cold spell and what may come for the rest of the winter, county officials would like to remind everyone of options you have if you are in need of warming shelters.

For residents that live in Newton County, who are in a high-risk cold-exposure situation and cannot get to a warming shelter you can call the Newton County 911 center NON-EMERGENCY phone number at 219-474-5661 to request non-emergent transportation to a warming shelter. Transportation will be prioritized based on available resources when not already assigned to other calls. Transportation during business hours can be arranged through Newton County Community Services or other sources for after hours.

If you are experiencing a medical emergency related to cold exposure you must call 911 for immediate medical help.

The Government Center building is listed as the main warming shelter during the hours of 8am-4pm but can be extended depending on resources. Other places such as libraries, community centers, and churches are also available during business hours but you would need to check with them before going there.

Remember these are just temporary shelters and are not set up for overnight stays. More planning and steps would need to take place if you would need a shelter for overnight.

Due to the forecasted extreme cold, all branches of Newton County Public Library will be open 12:00 PM-5:00 PM on Monday, January 20th. Please stay warm and safe.

We will be closed this Monday, January 20, 2025, for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Trash pickup will still be on Monday. As always you can pay online at www.townofmorocco.in.gov or the night drop in front of the building.

Huge shout out and congratulations to one of our own! Mike Clement’s has worked his tail off the last 12 months and the reward was worth it! He is just a few steps away from being certified as a paramedic. Working full time as an EMT with our county and answering calls as a volunteer Firefighter is hard enough but doing all that and attending school to further his EMS goals, is extremely difficult! Mike makes for our third member to become a paramedic. Well done sir we’re proud of your accomplishments!.
