Sunday August 21st is National Senior Citizens Day!
On August 21, 1988, Proclamation 5847, National Senior Citizens Day was declared by President Ronald Reagan. Its purpose is to recognize the achievements and contributions of the 60 year old plus folks in our country.
Now just how are you going to observe national senior citizens day?
Here are a few suggestions from Senior Life Jersey
#1. Celebrate.
If you are a senior citizen, this day would be the perfect time to reflect on how you got here and your future. More importantly it is a time to celebrate, you have worked hard to get this far, so spend some time being mindful, then go and embrace your day, treat yourself, you deserve it!
#2. Reach out to a senior family member.
Do you have a senior family member, a parent, grandparent, aunt, or uncle? If not a family member, how about a friend’s parent that is close, a neighbor, or church member?
Plan to use this day and visit them and spend some time together, make it even more special by taking another senior with you for the visit, and if young ones are available take them as well, make it a real holiday. Take some goodies if you can, and have the little one’s draw a picture as a gift. If you just can’t make the visit, how about a phone call to let them know you are thinking of them and what their wisdom has meant to you.
#3. Make a donation to a nursing or retirement home.
Call a local nursing facility and ask if there is a particular need, or shortage of anything.
One of the kindest and most rewarding things one can do is to donate essential goods or gifts to a nursing/retirement home. Give your nearest facility a call and ask them whether they have a shortage of anything. Or simply drop off some flowers, juice boxes, or any other suggested treats. You can really bring a smile to someone’s face!
Now Five Senior Fun Facts!
#1. 60 is the age a person is considered to be a senior citizen.
#2. Less than 4% of people over 65 years old are in nursing

Three Common Options For Assisted Living in Moorestown and Nearby Communities
Health concerns increase as we age, we often need some help with task that were previously easy, like bathing or going to the store. Many families turn to assisted living facilities for support and care, for older relatives.
Remember these are non-medical facilities for assisted, independent living, not skilled nursing facilities or nursing homes.
An Assisted Living Community is housing for Seniors that provides long-term daily support, and personal care, including meals, bathing, medication management and transportation. The senior community network, Senior Life Jersey, says “ They are plenty of considerations to think about when it comes to choosing a home for a loved one in assisted living community, including space, level of care, and lifestyle."
Here are three common assisted living options in our area.
1 Private apartments
2 Shared rooms
3 Private rooms
#1. Apartments.
If the Senior wants to, and is capable of living independently, an apartment in an assisted living facility could be a great option. Moorestown area Assisted Living Communities (ALC), have studio, one, and even two bedroom units available, with several floor plans, they can be furnished or unfurnished. Bathing, meals and medication management are often standard.
A resident can live in their own unit, which may include a living room, bathroom and a small kitchen. Studios usually have kitchenettes, a refrigerator and a microwave.
Many of the area communities offer high-end options, which are quite comfortable and feel like a luxury town-home. They allow residents more privacy when it comes to receiving care that can be delivered on a schedule preferable to the resident.
#2.
Shared rooms.
A shared room is where two or more seniors live in a single bedroom in a dorm style setting. This cost efficient option is ideal for companionship and couples. Loneliness is a growing concern for seniors. Feelings of boredom
Mount Laurel's Hotel ML to Reopen 2022
Mount Laurel's
Hotel ML & CoCo Keys WaterPark to Reopen 2022
When The Mount Laurel Hilton opened in 1977, it was a gem of a hotel, it boasted 300 rooms, a salon, sports bar, restaurant, resort size pool, tennis and basketball courts, and a view of the Philadelphia Skyline. Dick Vermeil, the first coach to take the Eagles to a Super Bowl, had the Eagles stay there the night before home games.
Those days have long gone, and the hotel has since flown a few hotel flags including, Clarion, Radisson, and Marriott. The addition of the Coco Key’s WaterPark, about fifteen years ago, brought in good business initially. However, the Sage organization, owners at the time, began to struggle with its business clientele, and eventually lost the Marriott flag.
It sold at on-line auction and reopened as the ML Hotel ,
New owner’s Morris Wilner, and family, had good intentions, and did have some good years but then Covid showed up, water parks were hit particularly hard, the hotel shut down.
Mount Laurel is home to many South Jersey hotels, with ten or more that have over 100 rooms and a bar.
The Hotel ML is located at 914 Route 73 in Mt Laurel, right is next to the Route 295 exit, a prime location. Now may have of been an ideal time to purchase such a place. That may why John Wei decided to do just that.
Mr. Wei is a prominent Philadelphia entrepreneur choreographing this exchange. He dropped a cool $13 million on the property. His plans are to get the hotel reopened in 2022, with the WaterPark following soon after.
The people behind the rebranding are keeping their secrets however, encouraging customers to come and see when it is all done.

The Senior Gold Prescription Discount program helps eligible New Jersey residents pay for prescription drugs, insulin, insulin needles and syringes and needles for injectable medicines used for the treatment of multiple sclerosis.
Program Summary
Members receive assistance for prescribed legend drugs, insulin and insulin supplies.
Senior Gold does not pay for diabetic testing supplies (e.g., test strips and lancets). If Senior Gold beneficiaries have health insurance coverage, such as Medicare Part B that pays for diabetic testing supplies, a pharmacy must bill that insurance plan. Senior Gold will not pay for them.
Members pay a copayment of $15 plus 50% of the remaining cost of each Senior Gold covered drug.
Once members reach annual out-of-pocket expenses exceeding $2,000 for single persons or $3,000 for married couples, they pay only a flat $15 copayment per prescription for the balance of that eligibility period;
A Senior Gold beneficiary must be a New Jersey resident;
A Senior Gold beneficiary must be 65 years of age or older, or at least 18 years of age and receiving Social Security Title Disability benefits;
A Senior Gold beneficiary must have annual income for 2022 between $38,769 and $48,769 if single or between $45,270 and $55,270 if married.
All Medicare-eligible Senior Gold beneficiaries must participate in Medicare Part D. Senior Gold beneficiaries must pay the monthly premium directly to the Medicare Part D plan of their choice. They also are responsible for paying any late enrollment penalty imposed by Medicare for each month they were eligible to enroll in Medicare Part D but did not enroll.
Senior Gold benefits help to make Medicare prescription drug coverage more affordable by reducing any other out-of-pocket costs associated with that coverage, such as deductibles, co-insurance, and the coverage gap known as the "donut hole."

Look-out Moorestonians, Extreme Heat with and threatening Thunderstorms Expected!
An extended heat wave and scattered thunderstorms are in-store for us over the next two weeks.
The CDC (Center for Disease Control says, People aged 65 or older are more prone to heat-related health concerns. Older adults can’t adjust to sudden temperature changes as fast as younger people. This may happen because of certain medicines they take or chronic illnesses that affect their ability to regulate body temperature. When not treated properly, heat-related illnesses can lead to death. But you can take steps to stay cool during hot weather."
Here are some safety precautions to take during extreme heat conditions:
Use ceiling and other fans to provide additional cooling and better circulation.
Wear loose fitting light colors clothing, not dark colors that absorb the sun’s rays.
Operate appliances in the morning or evening when it is cooler outside.
Seek out air-conditioned spaces, if possible, if your home becomes too warm.
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid drinks with caffeine or alcohol.
Ease-up on strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Alice Paul Activist and Moorestown Resident
Women’s rights have come a long way, while there is still work to be done, we can thank some of the heroes of the 20th century for the better situation we have now. Alice Paul is one of these heroes, a suffragette leader who initiated changes in women’s rights around the globe.
Her life was truly dedicated to the sole purpose of attaining equal rights for women. Much like other famous protesters of the time, she was incarcerated several times while protesting in England. Alice Paul believed other women’s rights organizations such as the National American Women’s Suffrage Association (NAWSA) were to tame and employed more direct tactics in an organization of her own. This organization was the Congressional Union for Women’s Suffrage (CUWS) which merged with the Women’s Party 4 years after its conception to form the National Woman’s Party (NWP).
Paul was Highly educated, attaining her second doctoral degree from American University in 1928. She believed in the power of education and believed in the intelligence of women, citing that “World War II would never have happened if women had a say at the Paris Peace convention.”
Her many achievements are astounding for the time in which she lived
Despite most of her activism being behind her, she remained politically active. It was in this home that she successfully lobbied for the Equal Rights Amendment.
You can Paulsdale, a historic estate and house museum located at 128 Hooton Road, Mount Laurel Township, New Jersey. Built about 1840, it was the Farmhouse was birthplace and childhood home of Alice Paul.
Ms. Paul spent the latter part of her life in a Moorestown.
