Niambi Brown Davis

Niambi Davis is an avid reader, writer, fact ju**ie, hobbyist photographer, a lover of travel and the tropics. She was born in Philadelphia, PA, and raised on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. She and her family lived for many years in Washington, DC and for three and a half years, made the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago their home. In addition to "Sanctuary", Niambi’s work includes "From Dusk to Dawn", her first full-length novel, "Love’s Redemption", a romance graphic novel, and the novella "Sabor a Mi". She has researched and written African-American history radio scripts for SI Communications. Niambi has written for Travel and Enjoy Magazine, Travel Lady Magazine, the Queen Anne’s County Record Observer and for Dorchester Publication’s women’s magazines. She was also a contributing columnist to MyRomanceStory.com.

Today is World Eating Disorders Action Day. We wanted to share the very personal story of author Natalie Gold from her book,
"Binge Crazy: A Psychotherapist’s Memoir of Food Addiction, Mental Illness, Obesity and Recovery":

When I was a kid, I had two parents who were needy. Very needy, emotionally. They couldn’t help it. It wasn’t conscious. But they fed off me, because they needed me so much. They needed me to fill them up and give them a reason to go to work and to clean and shop and cook and manage. And somehow in all this, I got lost. And it has taken a very long time to get un-lost. Un-lost and found in the big city.

So when I sensed that someone was too needy the way my parents were, I made a run for it, buckled up and sped away as fast as I could. Afraid I’d have the life sucked out of me. Very sad. No wonder I turned to a substance like food to fill myself up. I was a kid then and didn’t know how to look after myself. Didn’t fully realize what was happening to me. But I did keep trying to get away. I’d hide in the back room, pretending to do my homework. But I’d really be daydreaming, listening to music or reading a book, and mostly trying to figure out the world.

But it didn't matter how much I figured things out. By the time I was twenty-one, I needed a mental hospital to help me get away. And to stop the life from being sucked out of me.

This is the story of how that came to be. And what happened during and after. This is also the story of a pernicious and chronic affliction – binge eating disorder, or BED – and how it develops and progresses over time, how it can contribute to obesity, how it can influence and affect every aspect of your life until you get the appropriate treatment and start on the long, often gruelling path to healing.

I still feel sad about the death of Patty Duke. A wonderful child actor. A wonderful adult actor. Maybe it’s because she was always there with re-runs of the old b&w TV show with that theme song that still gets stuck in your head. Plus great performances like her Oscar-winning one in “The Miracle Worker.” I loved her in “Captains and the Kings,” one of those 70's mini-series with everyone from Charles During to Celeste Holms! She played a president, a first lady (Martha Washington), herself, an angel… We can’t blame her for how corny the “Valley of the Dolls” movie was. In celebrating her life, her family reminds us that she was a mental health pioneer and one of the first public figures to share their struggles with mental illness. Today many celebrities promote their personal demons the same way they promote their latest movie. They use mental health problems as an excuse for bad behavior. Duke instead was an advocate and educator for the issues of mental health. She'll be missed, but she left behind a legacy to inspire us. , .

As a reader, I've been wondering what makes a novel a good book and what makes it a great book. Overall the story and the characters need to stay with you even after you turn the last page. You don't necessarily need to like the characters, but maybe you need to root for them. You also don't necessarily need more of the story since in some great books the story is wrapped up and there is nothing else to say. But you need to think about the book after you're finished reading it. Maybe even debate the ending or a character's actions.

I'm still trying to figure this out. What do you think makes a book good? And what makes a book great?

We couldn't let the recent announcement that Samhain Publishing was shutting down go without comment. Samhain is one of the pioneers in publishing romance fiction in e-book formats. Arrow Publications was launched around the same time as Samhain, so we've followed them with great interest over the years. We were fortunate to meet Samhain's publisher, Christina Brashear, when she was a panelist on a workshop about multi-platform publishing and devices that we hosted at the 2010 RT BookLovers Convention in Ohio. Christina did a fantastic job and provided the audience and panel with a lot of good advice. What she said nearly six years ago is still true. E-book publishers cannot put all their eggs in one basket by selling their titles exclusively on their website. Christina also noted that apart from the name recognition of the author, covers are an important to pull in a potential buyer, followed by a good blurb and an enticing excerpt. Good advice for all those indie authors out there, too.

We wish Christina and everyone at Samhain all the best in their next ventures. We're sure they will be exciting and groundbreaking!
