Breaking News!

The Margibi Sports Steering Committee has announced that Margibi County may not take part in the National County Sports Meet due to a lack of funding.

It’s disheartening to learn from an insider within the Margibi Sports Association (MSA) that the county might miss this year's National County Sports Meet. Despite the recent announcement of the final selections for both the kickball and football teams on social media, it was made clear by the Steering Committee Chairperson during a gathering at his home on Wednesday, January 8, with several notable members of the sports association and Chief Patron of Sports Atty Victoria Wolobah Duncan present.

It’s important to note that since the tournament's inception, there has been no financial support from the county authorities, legislative caucus, or even from influential local citizens.

If the county withdraws, it will face penalties from the Ministry of Youth & Sports before participating in the tournament, and it's concerning that players contracted to receive payments from the county may not be compensated under these circumstances.

So far, Margibi County has received 75% of the USD 15,000.00 allocated by the Ministry of Youth & Sports to prepare for kickball, football, and basketball.

Margibi County is placed in Group B alongside host Grand Gedeh, Montserrado, and Grand Kru Counties, with its first match scheduled for Sunday, January 12, against Montserrado County.

Acting Immigration Commissioner General Denies Involvement in Lofa ‘Ritualistic’ Killing Amid Violent Protest.

Acting Immigration Commissioner General Elijah F. Rufus has denied any connection to Yakpawolo Moisemai, the suspect arrested in the murder of Mayoungor Keleko, a 45-year-old woman found dead in Voinjama District, Lofa County. Rufus stated that he is merely a victim of mistaken identity due to the shared surname and emphasized that he does not know Moisemai, having left Lofa in 1992.

Tensions rose in the county following Keleko's death, leading to accusations against Rufus because of his surname's similarity to the suspects. Moisemai later died in custody by su***de, which escalated the situation, resulting in the burning of a magisterial court and a police station.

Rufus claims that the allegations against him may stem from suspended Liberia Immigration Service (LIS) Commissioner Stephen H. J. Zargo, who is believed to be spreading negative propaganda to undermine Rufus's reputation and regain favor with President Joseph Nyumah Boakai. Reports suggest that President Boakai is leaning towards Rufus for the permanent commissioner position, causing Zargo to retaliate.

Additionally, many immigration officers support Rufus, hoping he will be officially appointed to lead the LIS for the next five years instead of reinstating Zargo, who was suspended in November 2024 for mishandling official duties.

Update‼️

Tensions are escalating in Lofa as an irate crowd targets the Magistrate Court.

Reports indicate that the unrest stems from the discovery of a deceased primary suspect in an alleged murder case that took place on New Year’s Eve.

The report reveals that Yakpawolo Moisemai, a 19-year-old primary suspect in the murder investigation of a 45-year-old woman in Duwoigomai town, was found dead in a police cell in Voinjama City.

On New Year’s Eve, Moyoungor Keleko's lifeless body was discovered on a farm road. Authorities were notified, leading to the formation of a 15-member jury to examine the remains.

The jury's findings suggested foul play, indicated by severe lacerations on her hands and a broken neck.

Police apprehended five suspects, including Moisemai, who became a key figure in the investigation. To prevent any potential influence on his testimony, investigators chose to isolate him from the other suspects. It is reported that Moisemai allegedly took his own life while in custody.

He was taken to Tellewoyan Memorial Hospital, where he was declared dead. His body has been placed in the mortuary at Tellewoyan Hospital.

Unverified reports suggest that tensions are escalating in Duwoigomai town in the wake of these developments. Moisemai's death could complicate the ongoing investigation for the authorities.

Update!

President Joseph Boakai has left Liberia to attend the inauguration of Ghanaian President-elect John Dramani Mahama on January 7, 2025, accompanied by "Speaker" Richard Koon and other dignitaries. Joining him are his wife, Mrs. Kartumu Y. Boakai, Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Information Minister Jerolinmek Piah, and several senior Liberian officials, including Minister of State without Portfolio Mamaka Bility, Chief of Protocol Antoinette M. Wolo, and Liberia Maritime Commissioner General Neto Z. Lighe.

During Boakai's absence, Honorable Sylvester M. Grigsby, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, will oversee the Cabinet in collaboration with the Vice President and maintain communication with Boakai until their return on January 7, 2025.

Ghana’s Ministry of Information has reported that the inauguration will welcome 21 heads of state, three vice presidents, four ministers, and 24 envoys, marking a historic occasion as Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang will be sworn in as Ghana’s first female vice president alongside Mahama.

In an interview at Roberts International Airport, Representative Richard Koon confirmed his invitation from the Ghanaian government to attend the inauguration. He expressed his intention to address legislative reforms during his visit, stating, “I will be asking the Ghanaian government for support in reforming our legislature; that’s the primary message I’m taking to Ghana.” When asked about J. Fonati Koffa’s involvement, Koon noted he was unaware and suggested that if Koffa is in Ghana, it is on his own accord.

The inauguration is set to take place on January 7, 2025, in Accra, marking Mahama's second term in office.

Former Speaker J. Fonati Koffa has faced a political setback as key allies, including Representatives Sumo K. Mulbah, Prescilla Cooper, and Thomas Romeo Quioh, have shifted their support to Speaker Richard Nagbe Koon.

This realignment occurs as the House of Representatives concludes its extended session. Koon, representing Montserrado County District 11, has solidified his leadership since taking over under the Unity Party-led government, gaining support from influential lawmakers who once backed Koffa.

Koffa's declining influence reflects the changing power dynamics in Liberia’s Legislature, positioning Koon as a prominent figure while Koffa must reassess his role.
