The Cactus Blossoms dropped a new album today, and it’s a stunner! To celebrate, we’re giving away a pair of passes to see them (with Humbird opening) on Friday 9/13 at The Fitzgerald Theater in St. Paul. Comment on this post for a chance to win!

While The Cactus Blossoms (brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey) have drawn frequent comparisons to musical siblings like the Everlys and Louvins over the years, each of their 5 studio albums has shown growth. The band’s classic country and old-school pop roots are still there, but their evolution is obvious. “Every Time I Think About You,” released via their own Walkie Talkie Records, finds the brothers - along with longtime bandmates Jeremy Hanson (drums), Jacob Hanson (guitar) and Phillip Hicks (bass) - defying easy categorization as they jump from freewheeling rockers to gentle pop ballads, shedding the weight of expectation and creating a collection that feels timeless and devil-may-care in equal measure.

Audiences of a Humbird performance can expect whimsical, soundscape-y improvisations - electrified, gritty, Midwest Americana with a little magic fairy dust thrown in. For songwriter Siri Undlin, growing up steeped in church choirs and traditional Irish ensembles led to conducting extensive folklore and musical research around the world as a Watson Fellow. That work inspired years of DIY touring around North America. Undlin continues to expand and experiment as a writer and bandleader in a way that is fluid with each season.

FREE TICKETS—COMMENT TO ENTER THIS GIVEAWAY! We’re giving away a pair of passes to see bathtub cig with Trash Date, Robot Slide and Nat Harvie on Wednesday 9/11 at the Turf Club in St. Paul. Comment on this post for a chance to win!

Bathtub Cig is the intimate depression pop project of Hilary James Born in a Minneapolis bedroom during the spring of 2017, it is an honest attempt at coping with her long struggle with mental health. She is joined by Dave Power on drums, Skyler Nowiski on bass, and Adelyn Strei on guitar and harmony. Their 2018 debut EP, Old Light, draws comparisons to a synth-pop version of Frankie Cosmo with raw lyrics.

Trash Date is a rock trio from Minneapolis: Kate Saoirse, Megan Mahoney, and Joey Hays. All three have been active in the Twin Cities music scene for years, often backing up other local bands and artists.

Robot Slide is a guitarless band from the Twin Cities consisting of three brothers, Matt, Jake, and Todd, and their good friend Liam. The spirit of brotherly love is channeled in their whimsical, imaginative, and sometimes bizarre ‘sort-of-pop’ songs.

Minneapolis-based singer-songwriter, producer and engineer Nat Harvie ’s latest album “New Virginity” is a substantial departure in their music: the continual evolution of a vital voice, more than ever armed with the sonic accrual and lyrical assuredness to express the wonderment, and trepidation, of finding one’s way in the world – making mistakes, uncovering your character, grappling with ambition, desire, and neurosis.

FREE TICKETS—COMMENT TO ENTER THIS GIVEAWAY! We’re giving away a pair of passes to see Taylor McCall with Luke Callen on Tuesday 9/3 at 7th Street Entry next to First Avenue in Minneapolis. Comment on this post for a chance to win!

“My mystery is that most people see me as another southern guy or country musician and that’s not the whole being of my existence,” Taylor McCall says. “Spirituality and world music to me is connecting with a greater force and that’s what my music is; it’s connecting with something beyond me.” At his music’s core, there’s a relentless searching, too, which begins with the initial notes of each song, the guitar playing the silence. McCall’s music is admittedly “spiritually based music,” its roots in his father and grandfather’s sermons. The pews creaking, the dusty hymn books cracking open.

At the intersection of Harry Smith’s Old Weird America – the songs of heartworn highways – and the tumult of today you can find the music of Luke Callen. The songs – equal parts tragic comedy and hopeless reverie – paint a picture of the places and people that make up his earthly home. A poet – a player – a folk singer – Luke has traversed his country unraveling tall tales – short tunes and all that’s hidden underneath. Luke brings his humble sense of humor and humanity wherever he may go. His second studio effort, Also Going Nowhere, came out in February 2024.

On either side of the main stage at Great River Folk Festival were signs proclaiming it “Will’s Stage.” After the first act we found out why: The parents of a 31-year-old young man named Will came up to explain they sponsored the stage after their son took his own life this past spring. They wanted to honor his love of music and also raise awareness that there is help out there for others who are struggling. Their advice: they know it takes a lot of courage to battle these issues but please be brave and talk to someone, be it a loved one, a healthcare professional or one of two hotlines: 988 or 211.

Thank you to Will’s parents and Great River for amplifying this message.

FREE TICKETS—COMMENT TO ENTER THIS GIVEAWAY! We’re giving away a pair of passes to see Joseph with Becca Mancari on Friday 9/6 at the First Avenue mainroom in Minneapolis. Comment on this post for a chance to win!

For nearly a decade, Oregon-bred indie-pop trio Joseph have performed a certain emotional alchemy with their music, channeling their deepest inner tensions into songs that spark a life-changing shift in perspective. This is a tremendously special show celebrating the 10th anniversary of Joseph’s debut album Native, Dreamer, Kin which will be played in its entirety from start to finish, followed by favorites from the entire discography. This is a very important pivotal moment between what has been and what’s to come for the band and they’re excited to share it with their incredible audience.

Since moving to Nashville to start their music career in 2012, Becca Mancari has been lauded for their dextrous songwriting and prodigious guitar playing. Their sophomore album The Greatest Part, released in 2020, was an indie rock opus that garnered acclaim from The New York Times, NPR, and more. A transformative period of self-reckoning was the catalyst that ultimately steered Mancari to write and produce their triumphant new album, Left Hand. While it came out of a dark period in Mancari’s life, the album is anything but. Wide-open and welcoming, the music beckons all listeners, encouraging community among strangers.

LAST-MINUTE GIVEAWAY! Looking for something fun to do next week? We’re giving away a pair of passes to see The Pentagram String Band with Jaw Knee Vee and The Right Here on Monday 8/26 at 7th Street Entry next to First Avenue in Minneapolis. Comment on this post for a chance to win!

The Pentagram String Band are a satanic bluegrass band from KCMO. They are suspicious of traditional bluegrass and play a style of gothic folk, punk, and thrash metal. Often involving cannibalism and murder, their lyrics focus on themes of satan, misery, and the joys of death.

Jaw Knee Vee “is basically a musical hurricane who doesn’t so much play his instruments (some stringed instrument, kick drum, and cymbal) as assault them. I’ve heard a lot of one-man bands and this dude is as good as any of them.” [Incognito, January 2013]

The Right Here (TRH) is a twangy punk rock ‘n roll band from Minneapolis. Formed in 2010, TRH turns a new page with their latest release, Northern Town (2021). Their fourth record is an anthem dedicated to the late nights we’ve all experienced. The grit and wisdom gained since their previous release comes through in the melodies and lyrics from start to finish.

Ah, the end of an era! The events calendar on our site—where I gathered all the Americana shows in the twin cities to the best of my ability—was one of my favorite features, and many people have told me they found it helpful. But alas, I’ve found it harder and harder to make time to update it, and I realize it’s time to acknowledge my own time and energy limits. I was unable to find a volunteer to take over this admittedly tedious task, so I’m removing the calendar from our site.

To those who liked it and used it, I’m so sorry! It pains me to admit defeat on this one, but other parts of AiA have grown so much, and I need to focus on managing them.

We tried this last year and loved it, so we’re doing it all over again—this time with select dates in Chicago!

September is Choose Our Adventure month! That means we’re keeping the calendar as open as possible, and if you invite us to a show, we’ll do our best to come to it (and post about it).

If you have a September show you want us to see, DM and we’ll let you know if we can. If it’s a paid show, you have to put us on the guest list. (Please actually do it lol; had a couple awkward moments last year. 😂)

This year in addition to Minneapolis/St. Paul and surrounding areas, we have a team member who can do select dates in Chicago and surrounding areas!

Sooo…where are we going in September?! Our DMs are open until Aug 30.

FREE TICKETS—COMMENT TO ENTER THIS GIVEAWAY! We’re giving away a pair of passes to see Logan Ledger and Jeremy Pinnell on Thursday 8/22 at the Turf Club in St. Paul. (Guys, I’m RIDICULOUSLY excited about this show—been waiting for Logan Ledger to come to the Twin Cities for about 5 years!) Comment on this post for a chance to win!

Nashville-based singer/songwriter Logan Ledger ’s mesmerizing voice calls to mind Roy Orbison, Willie Nelson, George Jones. He’s worked with producers T-Bone Burnett and Shooter Jennings, co-written a song with Steve Earle, and gotten a record deal with Rounder Records for his self-titled 2020 debut album as well as 2023’s Golden State. A native of California, Ledger developed a fondness for bluegrass, old-time, and honkytonk music from a young age. He draws on classic country music but artfully threads in elements of acid rock and surf music and baroque ’60s pop to forge a decidedly Californian sound.

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jeremy Pinnell deftly chronicles the joy and sorrow of being human. Rooted in his steady acoustic guitar, Pinnell’s songs are shot through with honest and classic elements. Honest and careworn, his voice can touch on wry, jubilant, and debauched - all in a single line.

FREE TICKETS—COMMENT TO ENTER THIS GIVEAWAY! We’re giving away a pair of passes to Fresch Fest 2024 ft. Gully Boys, Mike Kota, XINA, IVERS and Honeybutter on Saturday 8/17 at Fine Line in Minneapolis. Comment on this post for a chance to win!

This year’s all-local Twin Cities music and art festival celebrating Fresch Magazine features five amazing acts.

Gully Boys ’s sound has grown quickly - taking inspiration from ‘90s icons like No Doubt, Garbage, and Hole. With a recent trip to Audiotree, a debut LP in pre-production, and an upcoming set at the Minnesota Yacht Club festival, Gully Boys have no plans to slow down.

Mike Kota is a twenty-six-year-old singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Minneapolis. Her thoughtful lyrics and soulful melodies bring about introspection and empowerment.

XINA is an independent, multi-disciplinary artist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. If you ask what she does, she’ll simply say “arts and crafts,” an umbrella term for her expansive roles as a singer/songwriter, dancer, choreographer, producer, director, designer, and entertainer.

IVERS is a Minneapolis-based indie band that began writing music in the summer of 2020. The group is best known for their intimate, nostalgic, and catchy lyrics and melodies, as well as energetic live performances.

Minneapolis-based Honeybutter ‘s sound is warm and familiar but laced with something darker and strange. Their songs take on the quality of dreams dreamt during the longest and coldest of Minnesota winter nights. Genre-bending is second nature to them.
