I see the summer season is about over at Idlewild Park, which reminds me of a TV spot we did for them 19 years ago! I wrote, sang and directed this shoot with a cast of about 40 and shot over three days. It won second place among all international amusement park commercials! Not bad for little 'ol Vinco. Enjoy. Dale
This is a spot we did almost 15 years ago. I love this commercial because of the lighting, the camerawork, the staged action in each scene and the script. Now this is how a TV spot ought to look!
Did you know that "oldies" are back in town with the new WCRO, 102.9 FM? I guess that being a DJ never leaves you (this photo from 1971 is of me doing the morning show at WWML in Portage) so I love to hear the music from that era. Great songs, great groups. Thanks CRO for bringing the music back!
It was 7 years ago that Jerry Lewis died. Rebecca and I met with him in Las Vegas in July of 1977 to discuss whether we ought to have the telethon in Johnstown, just a few weeks after the '77 flood. Together we decided to go ahead with the production at WJNL-TV. Here is a photo of Rebecca I shot during the show.

My family along with two guests saw this fantastic show on Saturday at the Benedum in Pittsburgh. WOW! 20-piece orchestra, 50-person cast (probably 20 of them were kids!), a marvelous men's quartet, super voices and a fun, fun show! What a great day. And all of it (music, lyrics, and script) written by one man - Meredith Wilson. Amazing! Thank you Civic Light Opera!
I saw that the Pocono 500 race was this past weekend. I've had many experiences in my career, including shooting at two NASCAR races. One was at the night race in Bristol TN and the other was at Pocono, where these pictures were taken by Mike Karcher.
We shot in the garage area for two days, then on race day we had :Hot Pits" passes that allowed me to be in the pits, feet away from the cars as the pitted. WOW!
This was 28 years ago and Jeff Gordon won the race. My claim to fame ... going up the steps to the trailer restrooms with Dale Earnhart right behind me!
I heard yesterday that Richard Simmons had died. What a fun guy, I worked with him 4 decades ago in the production of a 30-second PSA for the local Red Cross. We shot the spot in the center court at Richland Mall. Here I am working with Richard on his read of the script.
He was as zany in person as he was on national TV! There was a Cinebon store about 5 stores down the hall from us with a line of people waiting to make a purchase. While we were setting up, Richard ran at them screaming for them to stop ... Cinebon wasn't good for them!
It required very few takes for us to get what we need on film ... and then he was off in a flash! What an experience!
In 1977, just a day after the flood, Rebecca and I went to Las Vegas for a meeting with Jerry Lewis about the MDA telethon we were hosting. Then on to Phoenix (114 degrees) and the Grand Canyon.
I brought my 16mm camera, a tripod and 3 Sani-Dairy cartons, thinking this would make a great TV commercial. It was never produced, but here are some stills of the effort.
Since my 52-day hospital stay earlier this year, I haven't been able to go anywhere (except Cleveland Clinic), But I'm finally more mobile with my cane... so we went to see two shows in Pittsburgh. The first, about Billie Holiday, was really good... saw it in the Cabaret theater across from Heinz Hall... great place to see an intimate show.
The second, a few days later at the Benedum was West Side Story. Magnificent! 25-piece orchestra, ,exceptional singers and a timeless story. Wow!

Here are a few pix from my time in Vietnam, 1969-1970. I was a first lieutenant with Advisory Team 41 in the Central Highlands. We had 6 5-man teams scattered around Kontum province and one of my duties was 'pay officer.' Each month I'd climb aboard a Huey and fly to these very remote outposts. Here are some shots along the way.

The recent passing of Jerry Long reminded me that WIX PIX, working with Ed Kane, produced the TV ads that helped turn DA Long into Judge Long. From 38 years ago, here are pieces of a few of those commercials.

Conemaugh Connection #4 aired in December, 2000. This is a beautiful program, one in which I take great pride. The wonderfully talented team at WIX PIX produced videos that were network quality 30+ years ago ... videos that no one else could have produced in this region then ... or even now. Really enjoyed Guys and Dolls at the Benedum last night. An amazing cast plus a 21-piece orchestra plus one of the best musical-comedy shows ever written equals a wonderful, happy evening. Pittsburgh's CLO puts on some exceptional shows!

The concept Pat Kane had was a program that focused on the people who were helped by the exceptional folks in The Conemaugh Health System ... a show about real people, about our neighbors. This program is the very first of what turned out to be 25 award winning episodes. Please step back to March, 2000, and enjoy Conemaugh Connection One!

On this Independence Day weekend, it might be nice to remember those who have allowed us to be free. One of those is Sgt. Michael Strank, the man who led 5 other Marines in the raising of the US flag on Iwo Jima in 1945, only to be killed 8 days later. A small but touching memorial to Mike sits on a hillside in Franklin. Perhaps you could take a few minutes from your celebrating to celebrate him and the others who put their lives on the line for us.
A special thank you to the folks who maintain this beautiful memorial. Well done!
Thanks Bon Air Boys for taking care of a dangerous tree situation ... 20-inch cherry hung up 45 feet in the air! They did that and other major trimming & cleaned up when done. Super!

I walked around Idlewild Park on Sunday. It reminded me of the TV spot WIX PIX did some years ago when Paul Bunyan's Loggin' Toboggan first opened. This was the biggest TV spot we ever did - big crew, cast of about 40, lots of tree-props and a jingle I wrote & sang. What fun. Enjoy "I'm a Lumberjack."

I went to the Westmont Memorial Day parade ... was a bit disappointed. I had heard that many kids decorate their bikes for the trip down Luzerne Street but only about 2 dozen kids participated. So I shot a few pix anyway and recorded a piece of the Westmont HS band marching by. Thanks kids! Remember those who gave their all for the USA!
