Goodbye August - Hello September! 🍁

While these are both 2 large highlights, I also had a ton of smaller ones too such as purchasing some cute office decor 💁‍♀️

I've gotten a lot of questions about the name of my business, specifically on what it means or where it came from, so I thought I'd finally share the story 📚

As most of you may know, I recently graduated from the Design Biz Academy by The Brief Collective. During this time I overhauled practically every business and design component of my brand - except for the name.

Here's why I almost changed my business name 🚫:

1) A lot of businesses often name themselves based on their niche to help attract the right audience.

2) Much like our surnames, a business name may reflect our brand's history, personality, goals, and/or purpose by explaining upfront what our business offers without the audience needing to think too much about it.

Here's why I decided to keep the name HeyMae ✨:

1) After undergoing a complete industry change from founding in 2017 to the end of 2020, as well as 4 rebrands since then, I feared that I would lose or confuse too many of the loyal following that I had gained in the last 5 years.

2) Because my middle name "Mae" is very personal to me, it felt like a bit of a betrayal to myself and my grandma to retire it completely.

3) I decided that adding "Digital & Design" to my business name would help clarify the industry of my brand.

4) I knew that with strategic brand and web design visuals I could still attract my dream, niche audience by letting my work do most of the talking.

Lineage of Silk is a family-owned, vintage clothing store 👗

I wanted to venture outside of my comfort zone for this project, which I achieved by blending modern and vintage typography sets. I had a lot of fun exploring with this project, and I hope to do more like it in the future.

Things I wish I knew before becoming a designer ✏️ :

01| Success doesn't happen overnight. I may be the most impatient person on earth, so this has been a tough pill to swallow 💊 . Have patience - good things come with time.

02| Imposter syndrome is lying to you. No matter your experience or industry, I think almost all business owners suffer from imposter syndrome at some point. Keep in mind that even if there are similarities, all brands are different, and all brands are worthy of success 💯.

03| It's not all fun and games 🎮. No doubt, having your own brand/business is INSANELY FUN. Unfortunately there are a lot of not so fun aspects too, but that discussion is for another time.

04| Find your niche and stick to it. I always thought that finding my niche would be the easiest part of starting my own design business. Unfortunately, that was not the case. My best advice is to test things out, and take your time ⌛️. There's no point in rushing into a niche that you don't connect with a few months down the road.

05| The #1 rule of design is that there are no rules. Seriously, I cannot stress this enough. It took a long time for me to climb out of and stop comparing my work to others'. Unless you want to drive yourself crazy, JUST DO YOU ✅ .

Does anyone else have a great appreciation for houseplants, especially towards the end of the year? I suffer from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), so the little hints of green throughout my house during long autumns and winters really helps boost my mood and productivity 🌿.

It's time for introductions 👋

Hi, I'm Sophie, and I'm the face behind HeyMae Digital & Design. One year ago I had no idea what I wanted to do with my array of skills. I had always said that one day I hoped to own my own business, but at the time it felt too far-fetched.

Thankfully, the organization that I completed my Graphic Design internship with in the summer of 2020 had full faith in me when they asked me to not only design a new logo for their collegiate baseball team, but to also design their uniforms. I would be lying if I said that I wasn't totally intimidated when I first got asked, but in the end it turned out to be one of the best opportunities that I've ever been given. Had I not pushed through my unfounded insecurities, I never would have had the courage to start my own business.

Owning a small business comes with a lot of pressure. The Dos and Don'ts are seemingly endless, and I have often felt my business going in circles while trying to follow all of the "rules". The decision to rebrand wasn't an easy one, but I feel that this new branding not only represents myself and my business much more genuinely, but is also finally a step forward.
