I was fishing this marshy river mouth area when I came accross a small grassy island surrounded by submerged grass flats covered in bait, and with a deeper channel running between it and the main shore with lots of current flowing through - a textbook spot to fin dsome feeding fish.
After a few casts I wasn't getting hit so I made a switch over to the Rapala Xrap 8 Glass Ghost and immediately hooked up! I love when fish are right where they should be...just have yo figure out what they want to eat!

One of the bigger redfish that I've caught on light tackle. This one was from last fall, right around this time of year. He was smashing a school of mullet pushing them up against the rock jetties so I tossed a paddletail right infront of the blowups and he hit immediately.
I need to get back over to this spot and see if the fish are fired up in there again this year!

It was so cool doubling up on a slot red and an slot trout at the same time. First time I've ever done that!
The red was 21" and the trout was 18".

In this video I spent the day fishing a new area that I've never been to before.
Fish could be anywhere at any given time, but there are certain spots where it is much more likely that most of the fish will be. Areas like grass flats that are holding bait, points with current flowing past them, drop-offs/holes/rapid depth changes that form a shelf, sunken debris or artificial structure like docks, or chokepoints are all places that are much more likely to hold or attract fish.
When Im fishing a new area like this, I try to identify these types of areas so I can spend the day focusing my attention on spots that have the highest likelihood of being productive, and this day it payed off with me being able to put quality fish in the boat all day long!

In this video I break down this new area spot by spot and demonstrate to you how I go about doing this.

Watching pelicans hunt baitfish while im out fishing is always amusing to me. They fly over the water and when they spot bait, they divebomb them with their mouth open and slam into the water, "inhaling" as many as they can.
There were 2 of these guys on this school of bait and there were so many mullet that as the pelicans were buzzing the water's surface, the bait was exploding everywhere trying to escape being the birds lunch.
Pretty cool to watch!

Do you think fishing is better in the rain?

This is an old saying I've always heard but haven't put much thought into until yesterday. I got rained on most of the fishing trip and the fishing was excellent. I'm not convinced they are related but if they are, I'm thinking it may have more to do with the overcast skies, and maybe even lower temps/lower pressure if storms are around then it actually does with the rain itself.
Especially fishing near rivers like i was yesterday I've always noticed that when it rains the water gets muddy and the fishing tends to suck, so I was really surprised when the bite was on fire.

Thoughts?

I noticed this sharp point where two sections of river meet and decided to go check it out. The fishfinder showed a rapid drop-off in depth, and the point had a ton of current moving past it while one side was slack, forming a current seam. Additionally there was a huge grass flat on the slack side of the point with a ton of bait over it. This is a textbook spot to find feeding fish.

I decided to throw a live shrimp in there suspended under a slip-bobber just off of the bottom, and it only took a few seconds for the biggest trout of the day to inhale it.

THAT is why you fish points like this!

This is why I love fishing creeks, rivers, and marshes in the fall... yesterday was awesome!

This was a new spot I've never fished before and it may just be one of my new favorites! A lot of these fish were caught on live shrimp between a splitshot rig and a slip-bobber rig. I like using shrimp when I'm fishing a new area since pretty much everything eats it. It's a great way to figure out if anything is in the area. Several trout were also caught on a small Glass Ghost Xrap over grass as well. Even got a double up on a nice 21" slot red and an 18" speckled trout.
