(10:45am)This is our sky cam facing northwest in Odessa towards the thunderstorms that are approaching the area. Winds are picking up at about 20-25mph.
Thunderstorms are moving southeast through the Permian Basin. These storms can have small hail and bring gusty winds and heavy downpours. It should reach Midland and Odessa within 10-20mins
Another weekend where outdoor activities should be focused around water, like the pool! As southerly winds slowly calm down, our high temperatures should slowly decrease as well. Just make sure you are staying safe outside! newswest9.com/weather
Heat advisories have been slowly creeping further and further west throughout the week and temperatures and heat index value continue increasing. Will we see them in the Permian Basin? We'll have to wait and see as the highs Thursday are projected to reach 102. newswest9.com/weather
Make sure you have multiple ways to stay cool this week as widespread triple digit temperatures aren't expected to go away for a bit. Keep in mind, this is just the beginning of summer, so be sure to buckle up for the heat! newswest9.com/weather
Are we starting to enter the dog days of summer? Well, just expect hot and dry conditions throughout this week and heading into the weekend. While we avoided the heat advisories today, they will make a comeback as early as tomorrow. newswest9.com/weather
Southerly winds are taking back over our forecast moving any leftover cloud cover and humidity out of our region. With that in mind, the sun comes out and temperatures quickly jump back into the upper 90s and lower 100s for next week. newswest9.com/weather
The first day of summer, and we only hit 79 degrees. Rainfall amounts were disappointing, but more is expected throughout the night. I hope you enjoyed the "cold" while it lasted because the 90s are back as quickly as they left. newswest9.com/weather
It looks like the severe thunderstorm over Fort Stockton is gaining some strength. Newest warning is showing tennis ball sized hail and 70 mph wind gusts. This storm will move to the southeast along 285. Take cover if you are near this storm! newswest9.com/weather
It's the weekend to appreciate everything that our Dad's have done for us. Temperatures on Sunday for your grill-cast will be about as hot as the grill itself! Kidding aside, make sure you are staying safe this weekend. newswest9.com/weather
Friday is always a good golf day if you don't have to work! Personally, I suggest an early tee time given how quickly we'll warm up, but if you like the heat, then all power to you. Keep the hat and sunglasses handy given how the sun will be strong all throughout the day. newswest9.com/weather
Thursday is the day to bring the 3 S's with you. Sunglasses, sunhat and short-sleeves. Temperatures are going back into the upper 90s and lower 100s tomorrow and will likely stay like that under sunny skies through the weekend and into next week. newswest9.com/weather
The one day severe weather is not expected and we get a severe thunderstorm warning. Well, that's how crazy our weather can get! This one storm is producing 60mph wind gusts and ping pong sized hail. Just to the east, a dust storm warning has been issued from the wind outside of the storm. Stay safe out there! newswest9.com/weather

Another look at those precipitation stats for 2021. We really made great gains over the summer, but we lost it all during the fall months...
We got a lot of earthquake reports here at NewsWest 9 not too long ago! People all across the Permian Basin felt this one. And for good reason! At 4.5, this was the strongest earthquake to ever occur in the Permian Basin.
Merry Christmas Eve, everyone! Highs tomorrow for Christmas... potentially record-setting. The record in Midland-Odessa is 78°, the forecast is 79°.
Hmm... it's December 23rd and none of the next 5 days are suitable for ugly Christmas sweaters. Are ugly Christmas swim trunks an option this year?
We've seen a pattern here recently. Warm to start the week and then cold front comes in to cool us off for the weekend. That pattern continues this week. Potentially record-breaking heat Wednesday before highs in the 40s on Saturday. That's WTX for ya!
Are you planning on traveling somewhere for Thanksgiving? Wednesday is looking like a good travel day for much of the United States. I know a lot of our flights layover in either Dallas or Houston, and weather there looks good too.
If you liked the weather on this Saturday, then I've got some good news for you! Sunday's weather will be nearly-identical! I'm expecting lows in the 40s that will quickly warm into the 60s before topping out in the low to middle 70s in the afternoon.
Headed out to watch some football tonight? Grab a jacket, a sweater, a blanket, ANYTHING to cover up with! Temps will drop very quickly this evening!
Trick-or-treating tomorrow? I'm sorry to say that you might want to bring a light jacket with you because if you're going out after sunset, it's going to get chilly pretty quickly!
A great Halloween weekend is ahead, with highs in the low 80s tomorrow, and just a touch cooler on Halloween. But look ahead to the end of the coming workweek & there are big changes! It's going to be nice temps for breaking out the Christmas music. 😉
A cold front will be making its way through West Texas and Southeast New Mexico tomorrow, meaning uneven temperatures across the region. Southeast New Mexico will be the coolest as they'll get the front first, then the Upper Trans Pecos and the Basin.
Potentially record-setting heat tomorrow before two cold fronts next week. The first one doesn't look to cool us down all that much, but the second one next week is looking to keep us more fall-like. Still time for things to change though, so let's watch it!
High temps tomorrow will be similar to today, but we're working our way back to the lower 90s by the end of the week. I know we want fall weather, but I'm sorry to say that I don't have any for you this week. Pls don't be mad. 🥺
