Lake County Love

Dawn breaks over Lake County, revealing a breathtaking landscape that captivates the heart. As a lone hawk cries out, we are reminded of the profound connection we share with the land. In the words of Barry Lopez, the love of place sustains us, teaching and nurturing in countless ways. Writers like Wendell Berry echo this sentiment, celebrating the peace found in nature. From vibrant spring blooms to the serene beauty of winter rains, each season invites us to witness the magic of our surroundings. Join us in exploring the deep appreciation for the land that enriches our lives. https://thebloom.news/lake-county-love/

Seasons of Serenity: Discovering Year-Round Magic at Casini Ranch

The days light stretches out just a little longer than a few weeks before. Winter’s chill remains early in the morning and dusk despite the alluring mid-day high temperature. Every few days, a newly arrived bird’s song reminds us of nature's return in preparation for Spring and the birth of new life. It might also be that time of year when the four walls in your home feel a bit cramped and there’s an undeniable itch to see something new; anything will do when spring picnics and a dip in the lake seems dreadfully too far away. https://thebloom.news/seasons-of-serenity-discovering-year-round-magic-at-casini-ranch/

This week I almost thought it was spring. With a high in the 70s and soft green grass to walk on, it's easy to get the spring itch. But alas, the sun’s departure in the afternoon returned our cool winter chill and, yes, my friends, it is still very much late February. But on these warm sunny days, let's do ourselves a favor and take in the sights. Drive to a favorite fruitstand and grab some locally picked, fresh California oranges! But be forewarned, there might be more orange juice on your hands and clothes than orange in your belly. I would know. This has happened to me. But oh, what a treat!

Reading The Lake Shore's Hieroglyphics

One day in early November a red flag warning was issued with some parts of the county experiencing power outages. The wind whipped across Clear Lake, creating whitecaps and waves. Water was leaping like fish, giving it the feel of an ocean rather than a lakeshore. Currents of air delivered the rich, riparian scent of the live lake. It was intoxicating.

A Taste of Home: Ali's Kitchen

Does it really get better than this? The night sky holds stars like diamonds, dust in the firmament expanding calm, peace, and stillness over our beloved Clear Lake. It lingers before birthing new beginnings, fresh starts, and joys for a new day. Happily, as the darkness lifts, it transforms itself into shades of blue that energize the spirit on this clear January morning, bringing hope for a bright new year. And what could make this bright day even better? Food, of course!

This week, I had the opportunity to go for a drive, and I did! I let my car decide where it would take me, and it chose to start in the Kelseyville Riviera and follow the meandering lake all the way to Lakeside Park. There, I was blessed with more photo ops than I could have imagined. Rocks with resting moss and lichen bordered the clear water's edge. Bare tree branches dipped themselves into the bluest of skies as if chiseled on an artist's pallet. Wildlife glided in the water or flew high above for a better vantage point. And I felt the stillness as nature is at rest, if only for a moment before the days grow longer and life bursts from its sleepy roots again. But there is no need to rush these things because now is the moment to savor, and I did!

Happening this Sunday:

The Organ's Breath of Life: Experiencing the Power of 7,455 Pipes

It is an unmatched sound that most of us have heard many times before. Its reverberating music fills the ear and body with notes high so high they prick the ears and so low they shake the ground. Collectively, its delicious music brings a full-body encounter. Nothing quite compares to an organ’s music, but absolutely nothing compares to listening to it in a cathedral. Welcome to the monthly organ recital at Grace Cathedral in San Francisco.

New Year’s Eve is one of the best party nights of the year. It’s a great chance to get together with friends, enjoy some good food, and laugh the night away. If, like me, you enjoy having a good time on December 31st, you may have experienced a vicious New Year’s Day hangover. You go to bed happy, albeit a bit dizzy, and wake up the next morning in misery. Your head’s pounding, your stomach’s in knots, and you can’t quite remember the three hours leading up to midnight. But have hope! (Sorry for the exclamation point; it even reads too loud.) Here are three great ways to handle a hangover.

Mighty Night

Sky dims, then the nighttime presents another layer of wonder. Since our planet, spinning on its axis once every 24 hours, is set in darkness for half of that time, it presents another opportunity to explore the wonders of the sphere upon which we reside. After sunset, the crisp and cold night renders even the most vividly painted leaves into dark silhouettes. Shadows seem to be tucked in for the night.

We’ve got just a few more days of writing “2024” before crossing out the four and replacing it with a five. How long that new habit takes to form differs from one person to the next. But either way, a new normal is just around the corner. And no matter where we are in life, I suppose we can’t help but look forward to the New Year with hope, high expectations, lofty dreams, and goodwill. And it would be amazing if every year got progressively better than the year before. Now, obviously, there are elements that we can not control or predict. But my optimism remains the same year after year. And why not? To live without hope seems like a bleak reality to me. So, I am filled with optimism for 2025 to be everything I have dreamed it to be and more. And why should I not? And just an FYI - I wish you the same!

Tangled in Tinsel: Navigating the Quirks and Joys of the Holiday Season

It’s a strange time of year when people pull out boxes full of green, white, and red decorations and lights to adorn their homes. Stranger yet, people cut down trees, bring them into their homes, and decorate them with lights and even more colorful decorations. And if that’s not enough. We see the same decor everywhere we go, whether it’s the doctor’s office, grocery store, or a restaurant. It’s in the music we listen to and on our televisions. It’s absolutely everywhere. It’s holiday cheer and merriment for all, whether we like it or not. And if we don’t fall into line and accept it, live it, breathe it, and yes, even eat it (it’s called cookies), we are called a Scrooge and scorned for not obeying social protocol. And for all of us, it’s not a choice. Whether we like it or not, it’s an annual tradition intertwined in the essence of our culture, thanks to the many generations before us.

This holiday season, as any good parent would do, I bought tickets to all of my son's musical concerts at Sonoma State University. Last Saturday, I decided to make a full day of it, taking my kids out to lunch, visiting our favorite holiday spots, and ending the day with Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony, where my son sang in the choir. The conductor talked before the show about Gustav Mahler, the life he lived, the pain he bore, and his longing for heavenly perfection–not only from himself but also from the world around him. We are his witnesses, if you will, in his work.

As the music began to fill the room, we experienced Mahler’s life quest of hope, loss, and, eventually. . . his resurrection. Tears flowed freely from my face in the fifth movement when the choir joined the symphony, and the soloists led the way to the crescendo. I rose to my feet with the audience in a standing ovation so my whole body could express the moment and, in a sense, be one with the beauty. My friends, I have yet to experience anything more moving. And just think, I bought the tickets only to be a good mom.
