🎶 Talking Heads - Remain in Light (1980)

• We’re FINALLY back after a long hiatus to talk about an album from the 1980’s for the first time. Talking Heads’ album ‘Remain in Light’ takes the groups brand of quirky post-punk, and merges it with new-wave, funk, electronics, and the polyrhythms of West African music. The band experimented with linear one-chord song structures, looping grooves, layered percussion, and the unhinged rants of vocalist David Byrne. It features the bands biggest hit ‘Once in a Lifetime’.

🎥 The Big Lebowski (1998)
- Directed by Joel & Ethan Coen

• Jeffrey “The Dude” Lebowski is a simple man. He likes bowling, drinking White Russians and getting high while laying on his rug listening to Creedence tapes. When he’s mistaken for a millionaire with the same name, he becomes wrapped up in a series of convoluted events involving a kidnapped pornstar, a feminist artist, a thug kingpin, a former German techno group, and a soiled rug that really tied the room together, man. He then enlists the help of his buddies, the Vietnam vet Walter and the totally clueless Donny, who make things considerably worse..

It stars Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Julianne Moore, John Turturro, Tara Reid, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

We’re drinking Miller Lite and White Russians for this episode, as we tackle the beloved crime-comedy that we’ve coined as “the anti-podcast movie”. If you like what we do, consider subcribing to the podcast and leaving us a rating/review. As always, thanks for listening guys.

- Directed by Martin McDonagh

• After a job goes horribly wrong, two hitmen, Ray (Colin Ferrel) and Ken (Brendan Gleeson) travel to the small Belgium town of Bruges to lay low until the heat dies down. While they await further instructions from their boss Harry (Ralph Fiennes), the duo explores the sights in town, conflict with locals and tourists, and Ray finds potential romance with a local drug dealer. When Harry finally calls, Ken finds that this next job will be the most difficult one yet..

This dark-comedy/crime-thriller was written and directed by Martin McDonagh, who also brought us The Banshees of Inisherin, Seven Psychopaths, and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. We recorded this the night before New Year’s Eve, so we briefly reflect on the holidays and exchange gifts. For this episode we’re drinking Goose Island Bourbon County Stout, and Makers Mark French Oak whisky 🥃

🎶 Stevie Wonder - Songs in the Key of Life 🎶

• Stevie Wonder released what many consider to be his magnum opus ‘Songs in the Key of Life’ in 1976. Backed by the singles ‘Sir Duke’, ‘I Wish’, and ‘Isn’t She Lovely’, this album saw him explore R&B, soul, pop, and jazz-fusion. It marks the end of his “classic period”, won him his third Grammy for album of the year in a row, and is widely considered one of the greatest albums of all time.

🎥 The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

• A national manhunt is enacted after a serial killer known as ‘Buffalo Bill’ kidnaps the daughter of a US senator. FBI agent Jack Crawford asks one of his top students at the academy, Clarice Sterling, to interview the infamous killer Hannibal Lector, as he may have insight into the case. Lector may be serving life behind bars for cannibalism, but he was also a brilliant psychologist, and Clarice is unknowningly about to become his newest patient..

This 1991 psychological-thriller is widely considered one of greatest films of all time. It swept up 7 Oscars at the Academy Awards that year, including Best Picture, Best Director for Jonathan Demme, and Best Performance for both of its stars, Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins. We dive into the films themes (woman working in a male-dominated field/s*xism in law enforcement), praise the technical aspects and subtle tone, and get to drink Lè Finn Du Monde (the greatest beer ever) while doing it. ❗️ NEW BONUS EPISODE ❗️

• Happy Halloween! We’re ringing in the holiday by taking a look at one of the more iconic figures in horror with Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th franchise. Known for its low budget, lack of continuity, and loose plot, the first four films in the series are relatively same-y (teens wander through woods, get undressed, then die) before the later entries veer off into bizarre directions with Jason going to hell, Manhattan, then space.

We’re hopping directly into the fourth film, The Final Chapter (1984) without seeing the previous entries, because why the hell not? Join us on what was supposed to be Jason’s last hurrah, before he returns an additional six times!

We’re back to ring in spooky season with our latest discussion on EVIL DEAD 2 (1987). This horror-comedy classic is weirdly considered both a remake and a sequel (or as director Sam Raimi calls it, a “re-quel”) of the original film. We get into the insanely creative direction, b-movie satire, Raimi’s work on the original Spider-Man trilogy, and just how weird the Evil Dead series is as a whole.

We’re kicking off the fall season with our discussion on My Chemical Romance’s 2007 emo-rock-opera ‘The Black Parade’. Its story loosely follows ‘The Patient’ as he reflects on his life after being diagnosed with cancer and given only two weeks to live. MCR went into a more theatrical direction here, embracing “classic rock” influences such as Queen and David Bowie while toning down the post-hardcore and pop-punk elements of their sound. The singles for the album were: Welcome to the Black Parade, Famous Last Words, I Don’t Love You, and Teenagers.

One year ago today we released our episode on Paul Thomas Anderson’s 1997 film ‘Boogie Nights’.

In 1977, Eddie Adams is working as a busboy at an LA club when he meets pornographic filmmaker Jack Horner. Eddie is welcomed into his eccentric family of misfits and quickly rises to the top of the industry under his pseudonym ”Dirk Diggler” - with the 1980’s looming, big changes are about to shake the adult film business, and the indulgence of s*x and drugs is about to catch up with everyone.

It stars Mark Wahlberg, Burt Reynolds, Julianne Moore, Don Cheadle, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Luis Guzmàn, Heather Graham, and Phillip Baker Hall

We’re discussing the 2002 album By The Way from the Red Hot Chili Peppers. On their 8th album, the band is coming to terms with sobriety, and sees guitarist John Frusciante dominating a majority of the songwriting for the first time. There’s less emphasis on the funk and metal elements the band has become known for, instead the band is taking influence from 60’s psychedelia and doo-wop. It’s lead singles were Can’t Stop, The Zephyr Song, By the Way, and Universally Speaking.

INCEPTION (2010)

Cobb, a thief who commits corporate espionage by infiltrating the subconscious of his targets (through a technique called “dream sharing”) is offered a chance to regain his old life as payment for a task considered impossible: “inception”, the implantation of another persons idea into a target’s subconscious. It stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eliot Page, Ken Watanabe, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Michael Caine.

We’re still in nostalgic summer blockbuster mode as we tackle Christopher Nolan’s 2010 mind-heist thriller ‘Inception’. Given our familiarity with the director, this one drifts away from being a normal review and slowly becomes a psychoanalysis of Nolan’s entire career. Thanks to everyone who listens!

After investors get nervous when an employee is killed in an “animal” related accident, John Hammond brings two paleontologists, a lawyer, and a chaostician to his privately owned Costa Rica island to make sure his upcoming prehistorically themed amusement park is safe to open. It stars Sam Neil, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, Samuel L. Jackson, and Wayne Knight

We’re back to talk about one of the most iconic summer blockbusters of all time - it’s Steven Spielberg’s 1993 film JURASSIC PARK. With the films 30th birthday coinciding with Alex’s, we thought it’d be fun to dip into nostalgia of this sci-fi/action-adventure/horror classic. We get into how well the special effects have held up, Spielberg’s career (before and after), and the Jurassic Park/World franchise as a whole. Thanks for listening!

Our latest discussion is on David Lynch’s 2001 mind-bending surrealist neo-noir mystery film Mulholland Drive. It follows Betty, an aspiring actress who arrives in Hollywood and immediately finds a woman with amnesia named Rita hiding in her apartment. While the two set off to investigate Rita’s identity, elsewhere in LA, movie director Adam Kesher is caught up in a Hollywood conspiracy.

This genre-blending film takes soap-opera styled drama and fuses it with elements of noir, surrealism, dark comedy, and horror. It stars Naomi Watts, Laura Harring, Justin Theroux, Ann Miller, Robert Forster, and Mark Pellegrino.

NEW EPISODE!

In our latest discussion, we’re talking about the historical action-epic THE LAST SAMURAI, a 2003 film directed by Edward Zwick which stars Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe. It follows disgraced US military Captain Nathan Algren (Cruise) who is hired by the emperor of Japan to help train their army against a Samurai rebellion. After Nathan is captured by the enemy, his time in captivity is spent befriending the rebellions leader Kotsumoto (Watanabe), learning the Samurai’s ways, and finding a way to regain his lost honor.

We get into the films mixed critical reception and poor box-office performance, Tom Cruise as one of the last true leading men in Hollywood, and the “white savior” narrative the film is critiqued for - all while drinking on Wild Ohio’s “Black Cherry Bourbon Barrel Tea”. If you like what you hear, consider subcribing to the show!

We’re talking about The Mars Volta’s 2003 album ‘Deloused in the Comatorium. This concept record follows the story of a man named Cerpin Taxt - who after overdosing on a mix of morphine and rat poison experiences nightmarish visions while in a multi-year coma.

Sonically it takes the expansive song structures of progressive rock and mixes it with the breakneck energy of post-hardcore, while also dabbling in psychedelia, jazz-fusion, and Latin rhythm.

NEW EPISODE AVAILABLE

Hey guys - our most recent discussion is on the 2010 Disney film Tron: Legacy. It follows Sam Flynn (Garret Hedlund) as he enters the digital world of ‘The Grid’ in search of his missing father Kevin (Jeff Bridges), where he finds that a computer program named Clue is threatening to escape into the real world and cause havoc there. It also stars Olivia Wilde, Nathan Fillion, Michael Sheen, and Bruce Boxleitner. It’s notably the directorial debut of Joseph Kosinski, who most recently is known for directing Top Gun: Maverick.

We get into what makes it such a uniquely frustrating movie - special effects that bounce between excellent and poorly aged, a generic protagonist, slick cinematography, underdeveloped themes, stale performances, and a brilliant soundtrack by Daft Punk. By the way, we’re drinking classic Guinness Draught on this one..

Hey everyone!

Back in December we recorded a year-end review, featuring both the best and worst movies, music, and television that 2022 had to offer. Unfortunately, some audio issues caused us to scrap this episode 🥲

We thought we’d try a bit of a redo and talk about both of our top 5 films from this previous year, as well as give some opinions about all of the categories of the 95th Academy Awards as well (we realize we’re extremely late, this was recorded the night before the ceremony). Regardless, we though it’d be fun, and we hope you think so too.
