One year ago, I knew next to nothing about cottage gear. I didn’t realize just how many incredible, small brands are out there, making creative and innovative stuff for backpackers. I hadn’t explored the world of homemade, professional quality gear, or truly understood the way in which these brands push the entire outdoor industry forward.
Now I look back on my pictures from this past year, and spot ✨so much✨cottage gear! From my fleece to my tent, or the jacket that I bring everywhere, my pack is full of gear from small brands - and I LOVE it.
I have to thank for this; they were the ones who challenged me to try things like an ultralight tent, test a frameless pack, and generally get comfortable with stuff I’d never considered using. Seriously; I cannot believe it took me this long to learn about brands like and SO many more!!

this year started with a huge change - i quit my job at REI and started my own YouTube channel - but what started as something massive and scary feels pretty normal now. I feel so grateful for this work, and for the community we have created, but I’m also super grateful for who I have become this year. Thank you to ALL of you for watching my channel, and to every single person who’s worked on MGO this year.

🍫 Fun fact: when I was a kid, my sister and I once had a s’mores eating contest - or at least, that’s what we called it once we realized that, after each eating nearly a dozen s’mores with no explanation, it was easier to tell our parents it was for competition’s sake than just the sheer love of roasty marshmallows and melty chocolate.
🌲As an adult, I still adore s’mores. They’re so messy and gooey and nostalgic! I finally got a Solo Stove fire pit, so naturally I’m in search of every opportunity to scorch some marshmallows over an open flame, and I’m in my ✨fancy s’mores✨ era. I’ve tried swapping the chocolate for a peanut butter cup 🥜 (the Reese’s thins work best), going for Ghiradelli chocolate squares and honey graham crackers 🍯 and even tried making gluten free and vegan s’mores 🌱 But my S’more de Jour? Swap the graham crackers for Oreos. It’s rich 😋How about you? Share your fancy s’more ideas below!

I had the absolute joy of filming with the amazing - and our video is out TODAY!! Andy let me take him on his first ever snowshoe adventure (spoiler alert: he is now snowshoeing more often than me and anyone I know) and it was a BLAST. Andy is an incredibly experienced hiker who educates and inspires so many outdoors people, so to get to share this with him was an honor. Go watch the video on my YouTube channel!!!
