📍 La Ferneteria Miami, named for its signature Fernet, an Italian type of aromatic spirit made of herbs and spices, like a bitter or an amaro. They even serve a flight of Fernet made into caviar pearls for a fun and interesting textural tasting.

Walked the red carpet to their exclusive entrance and took a private elevator to the 9th floor, where we enjoyed a very intimate VIP preview dinner with epic views at this 7,000 sq.ft. rooftop and tasted through some of the guest faves, like...

Named Best Wine Bar in Miami New Times among other publications, it's a hidden gem for wine lovers and cocktail connoisseurs in the lobby of Sagamore Hotel South Beach.

We were so in the moment meeting new people and seeing old faces that I forgot to capture more of the evening's festivities. It's the kind of place where you can unwind, stay present, enjoy an interesting wine or cocktail with a great backstory AND they'll know your name.

Because on 11/11, they created an 11!

And by "they," I mean owners, Abbe Diaz and Filip Trajkovic, and somm, Joshua Gosline.

A couple weeks ago, I was privileged to sit on an expert panel providing wine insights at the Miami Culinary Institute hosted by the 1st Latin American winemaker to receive 100 points from Robert Parker, Marcelo Pelleriti of Pelleriti Priore and his dynamic partner and co-founder, Miguel Priore. It was moderated by Freya Pan and included esteemed panelists, Allegra Angelo, Lyn Farmer, Brian Atkinson and Jim Carroll.

I would be lying to say that it wasn't daunting to follow Lyn Farmer, one of the best wine educators in the US, an incredible storyteller and a public speaker extraordinaire that I admire very much. He elucidated and coined the Pelleriti Tannin, which is consistently soft, silky and plush, and is recognizable throughout their portfolio of flagship and cult wines.

"When I first started in wine, there was no wine scene."

Did you know I made wine? The initial vintage was 2007. I owned a boutique California winery and we focused on making great, limited production fine and interesting, award winning wines with a focus on innovation. To that end, we were the 1st to use social media on our label and were even named in the Top 50 Wineries in the World on Twitter back then. I invented the 1st single-serve format for the delivery of fine wine and was awarded 2 US Patents for it... also, Beverage Breakthrough of the Year!

Wine has always been a part of my success story whether I was a nonprofit CEO or a banking executive. Wine brings people together. Wine is the great connector and I'm happy to report that South Florida has a growing wine community and culture that didn't exist 15 years ago. This allows wine trade and media access to each other through masterclasses, walk-around tastings and other receptions, which really didn't happen much back then. With access to each other, we can connect, collaborate, reciprocate, pay it forward and just be a village for each other. We didn't have these luxuries when we made wine, so we pounded the pavement and got on many of the coveted lists in South Florida through blood, sweat and tears.

And in a time where NOLO is trending along with a subtle temperance movement, we must remember that wine has been around for 8000 years and has always been a part of the most important events since then. Wine is social and social is healthy, especially with the younger generation suffering more and more from depression, anxiety and feelings of isolation. Wine connects people to history, culture, tradition and most importantly, each other. When you drink a glass of wine together, you become immediate friends.

What is a Pago or Vinos De Pago to be more formal and precise?

The highest classification for wine in Spain is a Pago. A Vinos De Pago can be best compared to the highest caliber designation for wine in France, a Grand Cru.

Pagos are so elite that there are only 24 of them in the entirety of Spain. To be a Pago, there must be approval by both Spain and Europe.

To heighten an already prestigious evening of Spanish luxury wines paired with Basque-inspired cuisine, guests enjoyed an intimate family affair with the visionaries behind Pago De Cirsus - Bodegas Zifar, Alejandro Gómez Sigala, along with his wife, Letizia Mangione, and his son, Alejandro II at Undisclosed Miami, a secret speakeasy event space hidden in the back of Caná Wine Shop on Coral Way.

Suivre le soleil… follow the sun (or meee) to The Charming Taste of Europe and be transported to a sunset Apéro in Sweet Bordeaux!

Harvest in Bordeaux usually happen in September, but the grapes for Sweet Bordeaux or late harvest wines are typically harvested months later. This allows the grapes to dehydrate slowly over time, concentrating their sugar content and naturally creating a sweeter wine with no added sugar or fortification. Another critical factor for making a great sweet wine is Botrytis Cinerea or Noble Rot. Botrytis is a benevolent fungus, which occurs naturally when there are misty mornings covering the fruit with moisture and hot, sunny afternoons creating a fungus that penetrates the skin helping to evaporate the juice inside for more concentrated sweetness and complexity of flavors.

The Union Des Vins de Bordeaux hosted an evening to elevate our spritz with Sweet Bordeaux tastings and Sweet Bordeaux Cocktails paired with gourmet dishes by the newly opened Momento by Ikaro.

Give Miami Day is an annual giving event to make individuals and corporations aware of the indispensable work being done by nonprofits and to increase generosity through donations. It's a 24-hour period of online giving from 12:01am to 11:59pm on November 21st. However, early donations are being accepted online from NOW until 11:59pm on 11/21.

And every year, South Florida Business Journal thoughtfully recognizes nonprofits and the generous donors in their annual South Florida Giving Guide.

Hosted annually by Tony Argiz, Managing Principal of BDO USA and Melanie Dickinson, President & Publisher of South Florida Business Journal, the 2024 South Florida Giving Guide Reception was held in Coconut Grove this year at the stunning waterfront Regatta Grove. It was a private event celebrating corporate philanthropy in South Florida, "bringing businesses and nonprofits together." We have attended for 10+ years now!

📍 Agave Masterclass at Superblue Miami hosted by and Jose Cuervo Tequila

It was "A Night at the Museum," where the art came alive and we immersed ourselves in it... tacos and tequila too.

This private masterclass for trade highlighted the 4th, lesser known expression of tequila, CRISTALINO.

Many people are aware of the other 3: BLANCO, REPOSADO and AÑEJO.

The main difference between the 3 is the amount of time they are aged.

Blanco or silver is the purest expression of tequila and agave. It is bottled after distillation, so it is clear with no aging. Best in mixed drinks.

Resposado is aged in barrel for a minimum of 2 months and up to 1 year, so it is golden in color and best in premium drinks or shots.

Añejo is aged in barrel for a minimum of 1 year and up to 3 years, so it is deeper gold in color and has a more refined flavor profile. Best neat or on the rocks.

Cristalino is a clarified añejo (aged tequila). It is filtered to strip the color from the barrel aging and tone down the deeper woody flavors, resulting in a clear liquor with the brightness of Blanco and the complexity of Añejo. Crafted for consumers who appreciate premium, but believe brown liquors are too intense. Best in neat, rocks, premium cocktails and shots!

I adore her and her many expressions.

I'm talking about Sherry... Sherry of Jerez, a fortified wine made from white grapes produced in the Marco de Jerez area of Andalusia, Spain. Sherry is Jerez in Spanish, Jerez is Sherry in Spain.

And it's International Sherry Week, so I'm spilling the tea about this sometimes overlooked, other times underestimated and many times underappreciated Spanish wine treasure.

Besides sipping the different expressions of Sherry (dry, oxidative and sweet) after dinner as a digestif, I really enjoy it in cocktails.

My "go to" cocktail depends on my mood. If I'm looking for a refreshing, lower ABV drink, then it's a Sherry Spritz with 2 parts Sherry of your preference (see list) topped with 2 parts sparkling wine, 2 parts seltzer and 2 dashes of bitters. If I'm looking for something more potent, then I elevate a traditional Manhattan by subbing out the Vermouth for Sherry. That's 1 oz. Bourbon, 1/2 oz. Nectar Pedro Ximenez or other sweet Sherry, 3 dashes of chocolate bitters or bitters of your choice and garnish with Luxardo cherries or Amarena cherries in syrup.

This wine quad took a 2-hour wine flight to "The Land of the Castles" in Castilla y León.

Located in northern Spain, Castilla y León has more than 300 medieval castles. This is more than any other region in the country. It's also the largest Spanish wine-producing region, so simply put, lots of castles and lots of wine.

A fun and informal way to ask someone if they want a drink in the U.S.

My answer: A resounding yes, and I'll start with a refreshing, crisp, palate-enticing Velenosi Verdicchio, per favore!

Velenosi in Italian means venomous or poisonous, so this wine brand was my delicious poison of the day! It's also the surname of the family-owned winery since 1984 (40 years).

Velenosi is a portfolio of beautiful wines from the less-travelled, hidden gem region of Marche in central Italy.

📍 Velenosi Vini Media Lunch, showcasing their beautiful and interesting wines at the newly opened Piegari USA Wynwood

They served their entire portfolio of 7 wines paired with 7 courses:

🍾 Passerina Spumante Brut (100% Passerina): Named for sparrows, "passeri" in Italian, that are partial to this grape varietal for its taste and small size; made in the Charmat Method, where 2nd fermentation takes place in a tank rather than the bottle.
🍽️ Bruschetta and Pane Di Pizza Focacce
🍷 Verdicchio Castelli di Jesi Querciantica DOC 2023 (100% Verdicchio): Named for this grape's hints of green color, "verde" in Italian, and also known as Italian Chablis.
🍽️ Carpaccio Di Manzo and Vitello Tonnato
🍷 Pecorino Offida Villa Angela DOCG 2023 (100% Pecorino): Named for the sheep, "pecora" in Italian, that would graze on these grapes during transmigration into the hills.
🍽️ Fritto Misto
🍷 Lacrima di Morro D'Alba DOC 2021 (100% Lacrima di Morro D'Alba): Named for the the grape skin that is known to start dripping juice or tears, "lacrima" in Italian.
🍽️ Fusillone Al Tonno
🍷 Rosso Piceno Brecciarolo DOC 2022 (70% Montepulciano, 30% Sangiovese): 91 pts. Suckling
🍽️ Tortellini Verdi Alla Valdostana
🍷 Rosso Piceno Superiore Roggio del Filare DOC 2020 (70% Montepulciano, 30% Sangiovese): 93 pts. Suckling + Gambero Rosso Three Glasses
🍽️ Costata Di Manzo (Beef)
🍷 Vino e Visciole (70% Lacrima, 30% Wild Cherry Syrup or Visciole)
🍨 Egoista Al Cioccolato (Chocolate Volcano with Vanilla Ice Cream)

Highly rec pouring the Vino e Visciole into their signature chocolate dessert for an incredibly decadent perfect pairing and sauce!
