The Great Chips Moman !

When Chips Moman was only a teenager, he hitchhiked to Memphis and was heard playing guitar by Sun Records' artist Warren Smith. Soon, he was playing rockabilly guitar in the touring bands of Johnny Burnette and Gene Vincent. The budding musician relocated to Los Angeles where he worked as a session guitarist at the renowned Gold Star Studios and became interested in record producing.

In the late 1950s Jim Stewart hired Chips to play guitar on a session; Chips continued working for Stewart and became an indispensable part of the early Stax organization. He found the movie theater on McLemore Avenue that became famous as Stax headquarters, and produced the label’s first three hits: “Last Night” by the Mar-Keys, “Gee Whiz” by Carla Thomas, and “You Don’t Miss Your Water” by William Bell, whom he brought to the label.

Moman left Stax in 1962 and opened his own recording facility in Memphis. American Sound Studio became a music powerhouse, where the boss produced hits for Aretha Franklin, Neil Diamond, Joe Tex, the Box Tops, and many others. The sessions were played by the house band, the Memphis Boys. Moman also continued to write songs, including the soul classic, "The Dark End of the Street" and "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man."

"(Sittin' On) the Dock of the Bay" was released 54 years ago today, shortly after Otis Redding's tragic death. Now considered one of the most important songs in music history, the track was written by Otis and Steve Cropper and features fellow Stax musicians Booker T. & The M.G.s along with Isaac Hayes. The song went on to sell millions of copies and top the Billboard chart later that year. 🎶
