Our interview with Mike Williams, former MPA President, from last Saturday's show.
Always thoughtful, sometimes provocative, Mike gives his thoughts on crime, race and local politics. A man of integrity, intellect and great compassion. You don't want to miss what he had to say!
Interview w/ Sen. Brent Taylor
In Segment 1 of today's show we talk crime legislation and the Nashville 3 with State Senator Brent Taylor
On last week's show we had on Josh Metcalf, owner of Midtown Krav Maga, advocating for the importance of self-defense training. I myself practiced and and taught Krav for over 15 years. One of the best things I ever did. Been a couple of years but I can still ramp it up if ever needed to protect my family or myself. 😀 not too bad for an old guy

"There are no atheists in foxholes." - Ernie Pyle, WWII Corespondent
Nor are there first responder de-funders in the middle of a crisis.
De-funding first responders translates into less officers and paramedics, less equipment, and less training.
It took officers only 3 minutes to respond to the active shooter situation in Louisville. The below harrowing 911 call is from a young woman inside the bank hiding in a closet. You can her the gunfire in the background. When minutes feel like an eternity all she wanted to know is "when will they get here."
Officers responded to the scene and took out the shooter, but not before a rookie with only 10 days on the job was shot in the head running towards the gunfire. (He is currently in intensive care fighting for his life.) The young woman survived.
𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲'𝐬 𝐒𝐡𝐨𝐰 - 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐁𝐞𝐬𝐭
𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬: Mike Williams, Sgt Darrell Mathis, Councilman Jeff Warren
* We recap a wild Tuesday night at the City Council
* Councilman Worth Morgan announces his goal to give Memphis Police Officers a 15% Raise
* Dr. Jeff Warren recaps the first reading of his Ordinance to rename the White Station Library to the Officer Geoffrey Redd Memorial Library
*Sgt Mathis and Mike Williams explain how successful community policing was back in the COACT (Community Action Units) Days. Memphis can't arrest its way out of crime alone, it takes building trust and true relationships with citizens.
*More police equals less crime. Pay more. Hire more. Retain more. More time and ability to be proactive on the enforcement side and just importantly the community policing side.
Recording of today's show. Link to podcast with all previous shows coming soon.
*State Rep John Gillespie has had enough and talks getting tough on crime from the state level.
*We are joined by Ellen Morrow representative of Back the Blue 901, who will talk about the importance of supporting first responders and how everyday citizens can join in the fight against crime.
*Is the City Council overreaching their authority with regard to restricting law enforcement's ability to conduct traffic stops? The rubber hits the road at the next city council meeting on March 7. Let's talk about it.
Put Yourself in the Boots of an Officer: Deep Dive Discussion of an 2020 LAPD Officer Involved Shooting w/pictures and video
* An example of a poised, highly trained officer dealing with a deadly, high-stress situation; making split-second decisions; protecting herself, her partner and citizens; and successfully neutralizing the threat.
* I've received more listener interest and feedback from this segment (which aired as part of our first episode in which Thomas and discuss an incident from 4/22/20) than any other to this point.
The MPD I know is a dedicated, caring place. No one represented that more than Officer Alphonso Jenkins. He was a truly inspirational man who positively impacted so many lives. A true hero and angel.
On last Saturday's show Thomas and I spoke with Officer Martin Williamson about the impact Jenkins had on his life and the Shop With a Cop Program that will be his greatest legacy.

Soooooo do you HAVE to read someone their Miranda rights at the moment you arrest them?
Most TV shows and movies seem to think so. Even Sgt Joe Friday.
Tune into the next episode of Rescue 901: The Memphis First Responders Show this Saturday at 11Am on 98.9 The Roar as we discuss this and other Hollywood myths.
The incident from another angle.
On today's show we welcome TN State Rep John M Gillespie (R-97).
Meet one of the prime legislators who helped get Residency Restrictions lifted. Rep Gillespie is a strong supporter of all First Responders and true friend and ally of the MPA and the MFFA. He is probably the hardest working member of the TN General Assembly when it comes to crime-fighting legislation. Here is just a small sample:
• violent offenders serving 100% of their time
• seizure of vehicles used to evade police
• increase of the penalty for drag racing from a Class B
misdemeanor to a Class A misdemeanor
Rep Gilllespie is also a strong believer in recognizing individual first responders. In the video below you'll see MPD K9 Anthony back in April post-bath before heading to Nashville to be honored along with his handler Officer Christopher VanArsdale
and hear the reading of a state proclamation, on the floor of the TN State House Representatives, recognizing and commending them for their lifesaving actions on a scene in which they located and saved the life of a lost citizen in imminent danger.
As Rep Gillespie was entering he MPA for a meeting several weeks prior, we saw in the parking lot next door a display of some of MPD's Special Ops gear and personnel. We walked over and Rep Gillespie got the opportunity to meet several officers and K9 Anthony. Upon hearing about his recent heroics, Rep Gillespie immediately began the process of setting up the honor.
