🌍Flight attendant complains about passengers switching seats on plane: ‘This isn’t Southwest’

A flight attendant has opened up about one grievance she has with her job: passengers who want to switch seats before the plane has finished boarding.

Destanie recently took to TikTok to share a story about a recent flight that she was on and what happened. It started off with the flight attendant explaining that the flight was “completely full” but because so many passengers had short connection times there was a window of time when only half the amount of people were on board.

“So, we are waiting on the tight connections before we shut the aircraft door,” Destanie said at the start of her video. She added that her flight had roughly “15 minutes left of boarding”.

She went on to explain that a mother-daughter duo had “grabbed her” to ask if the flight would be full and if they could sit in the currently empty row across from their assigned seats. Despite telling them not to move because the flight was supposed to be full, they ended up switching seats.

“I walk away, and then she tells her daughter to move [to the empty row],” Destanie said. She walked back over to them to explain that they had to sit in their assigned seats and could only move if any passengers missed their connection.

She added that these were not the only two people thinking it was acceptable to switch seats and many people on the flight were “getting comfortable in seats that weren’t theirs”.

This led to Destanie asking one of the other flight attendants to make an announcement on the intercom that people should be sitting in their assigned seats.

“I’m like, guys, please go sit in your own seats until boarding is finished,” Destanie said. “This isn’t Southwest. You can’t just sit wherever you want.”

She ended her video with a rhetorical question to viewers: “Why do people make this job so hard?”

After posting, her video went on to receive over 300,000 views with many people turning to the comments questioning why no one listens to flight attendants or even thinks to move seats.

“It’s wild to not sit in your seat when you board. Like, check the seating chart while you’re waiting to board if you want to know if the seats will be free,” one comment read.

Another agreed, writing, “They made that announcement on my flight the other day, and all I could think was, WHO IS JUST SITTING WHEREVER THEY WANT?!”

“That’s crazy I get nervous if I’m sitting in my own seat cuz I’m worried I’m doing something wrong anyway,” a third commenter pointed out.

Some fellow flight attendants also chimed in using the comments with their own methods and phrases they say when something similar is happening on a flight they’re working.

“‘Just let me know if this is you refusing crew instructions’ works like a charm,” one flight attendant wrote in the comments.

“Fellow FA. I always say ‘sit in the seat on your boarding pass, if you don’t like that seat we can always see what other airlines have available’ gets em right together,” another flight attendant suggested.

🌍Should you take supplements? A scientist who researches whether they work explains 3 people who might benefit

The supplement industry is huge and makes some big claims about what its products can do.

A supplement scientist said that some ingredients are helpful, while others might not be.

He shared three circumstances where taking supplements might be a good idea.

Is taking supplements a waste of time or vital for our health? With the plethora of mixed messages circulating in health and wellness circles, it's hard to know.

Longevity fanatics such as multi-millionaire tech exec Bryan Johnson religiously take dozens of supplements daily in the hopes of boosting their health. Meanwhile, most dietitians and physicians will tell you that eating a healthy diet is more than enough to get all the nutrients our bodies need.

Regardless of whether supplements work, they are hugely popular and the market only continues to grow. Surveys indicate that more than half of US adults take dietary supplements, according to the American Medical Association. And the market is projected to generate around $240 billion worldwide in 2024, up from $135 billion in 2016, according to Statista.

Richard Bloomer, a scientist who researches how safe and effective supplements are, told Business Insider that there are some products that do seem to have positive effects, while others are likely over-promising.

"There are many supplements that probably are not worth our time and money, but I think there are a lot of things that do have value. It's just a matter of finding out which ones have value and why," Bloomer said. "When the claims come up and they sound like, 'wow, this is probably too good to be true,' it probably is too good to be true."

He recommended people do a quick search on PubMed, a database of scientific research, before buying a product to see if evidence supports the ingredients it contains. But he also stressed that eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and getting good-quality sleep are the most important things you can do for your health, and no amount of supplements can substitute the benefits of these.

Bloomer shared three reasons you might consider adding supplements to your regime.

You have a deficiency
Some nutrients, such as vitamins, are essential for the body to function properly, so if you have a deficiency, taking a supplement under the supervision of a healthcare professional could be wise, Bloomer said.

For example, most Americans are deficient in vitamin D because we mainly get it from sunlight, he said. Vitamin D is essential for bone, teeth, and muscle health, so he takes a supplement every day to ensure he gets enough. Bloomer previously shared the four supplements he takes daily with BI.

Likewise, vegans, who are at risk of being deficient in vitamin B12, which is found in animal products, are advised to take a supplement. Vitamin B12 keeps the nervous system healthy, supports the production of DNA and red blood cells, and maintains healthy brain function.

Vitamin deficiencies can cause a number of symptoms, such as bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, and brittle nails, but it's best to get checked out by a medical professional before you decide to start supplementing.

You need support with a specific symptom
Bloomer said that supplements can be helpful if you're dealing with something specific. For example, if he's feeling rundown, he might take an elderberry supplement because there's some evidence it can help immune function, he said.

"During periods of time, let's say when people feel as though they're more susceptible to the common cold, using elderberry seems to reduce that to some degree." Vitamin C and zinc may also help with immunity, he said.

Someone might take lutein and zeaxanthin, both carotenoids, if they have an eye condition such as cataracts, because research suggests they can improve symptoms, he said. Likewise, studies have found that Coenzyme Q10 might be beneficial for people with heart failure and diabetes, among other conditions, he said.

You want to enhance your physical or mental performance
Supplements can also be helpful if someone wants to boost their mental or physical performance, Bloomer said. Many people already do this daily by starting their morning with caffeine to increase their alertness and focus.

If your health is already considered good, but you want it to be great, or you want to push the envelope a little bit, adding a supplement to your regime could be beneficial, he said.

🌍Another spring storm forecast to drop rain on Southern California this week

After a rainy Easter weekend, forecasters say Southern Californians can enjoy a warming trend through Wednesday, though more rainfall is expected as early as Thursday night.

As the weak to moderate cold storm makes its way into the Southland, temps are expected to keep rising, peaking at or near 80 degrees Wednesday in the warmest valleys, the National Weather Service reports.

Near advisory level winds could be a factor in some interior and coastal regions on Thursday, along with increasing cloud cover and noticeably cooler temps.

With the most recent storm dropping between one and three inches of rain across Southern California, weather officials are predicting the brunt of this next system to hit late Thursday evening into Friday, though only about a half inch of precipitation is expected in valleys and coasts.

West facing mountain and foothill communities could see up to an inch of rainfall.

There is also a small chance, about 10%, that thunderstorms could be seen on Friday during the peak of the storm.

Snow levels are likely to plummet to around 3,000 feet, with the cold storm bringing the possibility of one to three inches between 3,500-4,500 feet. At 5,000 feet and higher, snowfall of between three to eight inches is likely.

“Now is the time to start planning for possible winter driving at these elevations during this timeframe, which may include the I-5 corridor near Tejon Pass, Highway 14 through Acton, and the Antelope Valley foothills,” NWS said.

Breezy conditions on Friday are expected to make daytime temps in the 50’s feel even cooler.

“[The storm] is going to be in and out pretty quickly, which means we’re not going to see much on Saturday and Sunday,” KTLA Meteorologist Vera Jimenez said. “At least at this point, it looks like a dry weekend.”

Daytime temps Saturday through Monday should remain in the mid-to-high 60’s with periods of sunny skies and cloud cover.
