The Archives Room is an important part in MTTS history, partially because of the cleanout that occurred in September of 2023. We got access to the room when it was just called another storage area. Piles of yearbooks sat under and on top of the table. Other boxes and items were scattered around the room. Previously, the room had been used as an office, but those days had long passed.

After the room was cleaned out and we collected some of the yearbooks, we began spending more time in the room. From organizing and assessing yearbooks to looking through senior panorama photos, the early stages of the Archives Room were very pivotal in creating an official area for historical school documents.

As time went on, we slowly began decorating and making the room more functional. By the beginning of the 2024-25 school year, the Archives Room was getting closer to becoming the destination for any Melbourne High history needs.

Yes the room is small, and we’re working to get a large one in the future, but we love our Archives Room and can’t wait to expand and become a larger Alumni Center (way into the future 😉)

Fresh to the Collecton ✨

First, we have our 1985 Sears and Roebuck Co. CRT TV. This television has been with the same owner for 40 years before it recently stopped working (just needs a capacitor, we will get it fixed).

Next, we have a 1910s steamer trunk. This trunk was used by opera singer Ernestine Schumann-Heink. The trunk was donated to us by a local family connected by blood to her. This trunk has traveled across Europe, carrying costumes or music scores for Schumann-Heink. Inside where a lot of newspapers from 1972, which on their own are also very cool.

We are so thrilled to welcomee these items in our collection. Each object shows an interesting part of history, from when your empty luggage weighed almost 50 pounds, to when your TV had antennas on the top.
