To mark 28 years since the dedication of Melbourne High School’s current campus, MTTS hosted a tiny time-travel party! We shared old maps, demolition photos, construction-era yearbooks, and a brick from one of the remaining Mid-Century Modern buildings. Students took their best guess at its origin, and the whole lunch period turned into a fun history adventure.

Happy Sunday, alumni!

Melbourne High is launching a new student magazine, and we’re putting together a feature on the history of past student newspapers and publications, including The Liberator, The Bulldog Bark, and any others that were part of campus life over the years.

We’d love to include voices from alumni who remember these publications. If you:

• wrote for one of them

• had a family member who did

• or simply remember reading them

we’d be grateful to hear your stories, memories, or anything you’d like to share as we begin this new era of student publishing.

Feel free to comment here or message me directly if you’d like to be part of the piece. Thank you so much!

Hi everyone! Melbourne’s Time Travelers Society (MTTS) is putting together a small outdoor improvement project at Melbourne High, an 8×10 ft patio that will be used as a quiet spot for students to study, read, eat lunch, and relax.

Previously, we restored three memorial gardens on campus with donated lava rocks, and now we’ve been asked to help create a more inviting space for another commemorative area outside the school media center.

Right now, the garden has a sunken brick border and a mix of dirt and weeds. We’d love to transform it into a welcoming area that honors Dee Clayton, a former school librarian/media specialist. Our design keeps the existing plants and reuses pavers from previous school projects.

We already have 28 red 16” pavers in good condition, and we’re designing the patio with decorative stone between each paver. What we still need are the materials to properly prepare and finish the space.

We’re hoping a local landscaping company might be willing to sponsor or donate some of the materials. We’re looking for:
• Base gravel
• Paver leveling sand
• Decorative river rock or white stone for the gaps between pavers
• Rock-locking binder/liquid to secure the stones

If your business would love to support a student-led project that creates a lasting, positive addition to our campus, MTTS would be incredibly grateful. We recognize all sponsors on our website and through social media, advertising, and member t-shirt acknowledgments. Companies who donate will also be recognized in the school’s newspaper and social media platforms.

If you’d like more details or want to partner with us, please feel free to message us, we’d love to work with you!

The City of Melbourne has been awarded $50,000 from the Florida Division of Historical Resources Abandoned African-American Cemeteries Grant Program to fund the installation of a fence to contain newly discovered graves, an interpretative sign, and a concrete viewing area.

The City of Melbourne’s Historic and Architectural Review Board (HARB) will hold a public workshop immediately after the next regular HARB meeting to gather ideas and input on the design and content of the interpretive sign.

The meeting will be held on November 19 in the City Council Chamber. It will start at 6 p.m., and the workshop should begin at or about 6:45 p.m.
