On Monday, May 8th Medford Volunteer Firefighters Tony Garcia and Michael Smith were awarded the OSFA's Medal of Valor at the Medford City Council meeting. These men performed duties in a courageous and selfless manner in July of 2022 whenever an explosion occurred at the ONEOK Medford Natural Gas Liquids Fractionation Facility.

With flames visible from over a mile away and secondary explosions possible, these men advanced into the inner zone in Engine 1 to rescue six individuals who were still in the facility following the explosion. Upon arriving at the entrance to the facility, firefighters found locked gates and had to use irons to force them open. The firefighters then extracted the individuals and moved the to medical care with no additional injuries or loss of life.

The OSFA Medal of Valor has been in existence since September of 1995 and can be awarded to any firefighter who performs acts of courage, bravery and/or valor, who goes above and beyond the call of duty, who performs an extraordinary act of bravery or who shows exemplary action while on or off duty.

We will still change our clocks this weekend but that may soon change.

Oklahoma Senate approves bill to ‘lock the clock’ on Daylight Saving Time
February 28, 2023 | 03:35pm

"The full Senate approved Senate Bill 7 Tuesday. The measure, by Sen. Blake Cowboy Stephens, R-Tahlequah, would stop Oklahoma from changing the clock twice a year and lock in Daylight Saving Time (DST) year round.

“Oklahoma needs to be on the right side of this issue,” Stephens said. “Locking the clock in DST has countless benefits, and will result in our state being safer, healthier, more productive, and more profitable. Overall, this will improve the quality of life for all Oklahomans. I’d like to thank my colleagues for their support on this measure and look forward to the day we permanently lock Oklahoma’s clock.”

This legislation relies on the Sunshine Protection Act to be passed at the federal level before being enacted in the state. The Sunshine Protection Act gives states the rights to choose to permanently adopt Daylight Saving Time or practice standard time. Nearly half of the states have already passed legislation to stop their clock, with 19 choosing DST.

“In less than two weeks, we change time again, and I encourage all Oklahomans to pay attention to how they feel with the extra hour of daylight and to take note of everything they can accomplish during that extra evening hour after school or work,” Stephens said.

SB 7 now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration."
