Dr. William A. Hammond, a prominent and wealthy doctor who had served as surgeon general of the army in the Civil War, came to Washington in the late 1880s after many years in New York. He commissioned architect Alfred B. Mullett to design his palatial mansion, called Belcourt, on the northwest corner of 13th and Girard Streets NW, in Columbia Heights, a sparsely populated suburb in those days . The lavishly decorated mansion, completed in 1890, became the scene for many parties for Washington's VIP set. Hammond died at Belcourt in 1900, suffering a sudden heart attack after running up the stairs too quickly. In 1906, his mansion was sold to be converted to a girls' finishing school, as pictured on this postcard.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are playing on tv as I write this. As some of you may know, I am married to Oscar Madison, we met when I sat next to him in the sports department of The Washington Post where he was an editor. I knew nothing and still don't want to know too much about sports (except horses). SOOO one afternoon ages ago before this team even him we got a phone call at home and I took a message from so and so at THE JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS- I was sooo excited thought he was going to buy me a new car....I'm still waiting.
