Statue of the Royal Acquaintances Memi and Sabu

This statue evokes the intimacy of Memi and his companion, Sabu, although she is set somewhat apart by her oblique gaze.

Until recently, the flowering of nonroyal statuary was believed to have occurred only in the 4th and 6th Dynasties. Recent studies indicate, however, that many of these nonroyal statues, including Memi and Sabu, are better dated to the 4th Dynasty, contemporary with the great royal statuary programs. The early date for Memi and Sabu is based both on her coiffure and on the reciprocated embrace.

Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty, ca. 2575-2465 BC. Painted limestone. From Western Cemetery, Giza. Painted limestone. Now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. 48.111

Japanese have been producing wood for 700 years, without cutting down trees :

In 14th Century CE, "Daisugi" technique was born in Japan. Daisugi provide that these trees will be planted for future generations and not be cut down but pruned as if they were giant bonsai trees.

By applying this technique to cedars, wood that can be obtained is uniform, straight and without knots, perfect for construction. A pruning as a rule of art that allows tree to grow and germinate while using its wood, without ever cutting it down.

In the 17th century, a metal mask was employed to restrain individuals deemed insane. I recently delved into the history of mental illnesses and came across the Rosenhan experiment. In this study, David Rosenhan, a Stanford professor and psychologist, and his colleagues feigned hallucinations to gain admission to psychiatric hospitals. Despite later acting normal and claiming to be fine, the hospitals refused to release them, diagnosing all but one with schizophrenia. They were only released under the condition of taking antipsychotic drugs.

Rosenhan himself described his experience in the hospital, saying,
