FFFoxy Podcast #253 is now available. On this episode, we welcome Glenn Donaldson of The Reds, Pinks & Purples back to the show. Glenn has been a guest on the podcast two times before this and during the COVID period, he was also contributing to the Free Form Freakout website with his Failure Of All Pop column, which he has recently revived in a newsletter format. For this episode, we look back at some of Glenn’s favorite releases and discoveries of the year, and we discuss different aspects of his music-making with The Reds, Pinks & Purples, along with other topics generated through some questions submitted by listeners and fans of his music. Throughout the show, you’ll also hear tracks that Glenn picked out to play, some of our recent favorites from The Reds, Pinks & Purples releases from 2024, and some other favorites of the year that hadn’t been played on the podcast show yet. Hope you enjoy this episode.

FFFoxy Podcast #251 is now available. On this episode, I dig into the work of Feel It Records. Started in 2010 by Sam Richardson as a mere hobby label focused on releasing music from artists in and around his then-home base in Central Virginia, the label has since grown into a full-time operation releasing a broad spectrum of punk and punk adjacent music from a growing roster of national and international artists. The past few years have brought a re-location to Cincinnati and the opening of a brick-and-mortar record shop for Feel It, a move that has allowed Richardson to engage with and document more of that city’s vibrant underground music community. I recently had a chance to speak with Richardson, and we discussed the history and evolution of Feel It Records, the move to Cincinnati, the bands he has been involved in, and much more. You’ll hear this interview in a few different segments throughout the show, and you’ll also hear tracks from several releases from the Feel It Records catalog. Hope you enjoy!

Chris Berry is a good friend and long-time listeners of the Free Form Freakout podcast know that he has been an annual guest on the show for 15 years. He is currently going through a serious medical crisis right now that has completely upended his and his family's lives. If you're able to, please consider donating to support Chris and his family through this challenging time.

Chris, Anna and August have had their lives flipped as of Wednesday October 23rd. After having had a cold run the household for the past few weeks, Anna was prescribed antibiotics on Monday and Chris was prescribed a steroid nasal inhaler. On Wednesday morning Chris was resting and when Anna went in...

FFFoxy Podcast #250 is now available. On this episode of the podcast show, I get back to highlighting some of the new music that I’ve been listening to over the past month. You’ll also hear what I hope will become a semi-regular new segment within these shows that allows me to go a little deeper into a specific standout album of the month by speaking with its creators. For this first one, I spoke with Jim Strong about the making of his terrific new album, My Enemies Are Mine To Keep. I hope you enjoy this segment and the rest of this episode.

FFFoxy Podcast #249 is now available. On this episode, we dig deeper into the work of the San Francisco-based label, Paisley Shirt Records. Started in 2013 by Kevin Linn and his friends as an outlet for the various recording projects that they were working on at the time, the label eventually became the sole operation of Linn’s who gradually expanded its focus to a wider range of artists making lo-fi pop, experimental outsider music, and post-punk sounds in the Bay Area (and beyond). Linn continues to release many of his projects such as Sad Eyed Beatniks, Present Electric, and Tam Lin on the label too.

We recently had a chance to speak with Kevin, and we discussed the beginnings of Paisley Shirt, the small community of artists and musicians he connected with through the Hit Gallery, the music he has been making as Sad Eyed Beatniks, and much more. You’ll hear that interview in a few segments throughout the show, and you’ll also hear track selections from numerous releases from the Paisley Shirt Records catalog. Hope you enjoy this episode.

FFFoxy Podcast #247 is now available. On this episode, Chris Berry of the Soft Abuse and Fruits & Flowers labels joined me once again as an in-studio guest, something we’ve been doing on an almost annual basis since the show started back in 2010. As with his past appearances, I just handed over control of the music to Chris for him to play whatever, and as usual, he put together a wide-ranging playlist on the fly from his crate of records, tapes, and CDs that he toted in with him. We also devoted a block of time to play and discuss some of the new and forthcoming releases on Soft Abuse and Fruits & Flowers. If you enjoy what Chris played on this episode, be sure to check out and follow his great weekly radio show called Upside Down on the Minneapolis station, KFAI. Hope you enjoy this episode.

FFFoxy Podcast #246 is now available and will air tonight at 11:00 on KMSU. On this episode, I dig deeper into the work of the Morgantown, West Virginia-based cassette label, Crash Symbols. Started in 2010, the label was an outgrowth of the music blogs Get Off the Coast and later Decoder Magazine which partners Dwight & Liz Pavlovic were actively involved in. Crash Symbols has since gone on to put out over 150 releases from a wide range of artists from around the world. Their catalog runs the stylistic gamut from ambient works and beat tapes to indie pop and post-rock music and all points between. Yet, there is an exploratory psychedelic quality that runs throughout much of their catalog, both sonically and visually, that creates a fairly unifying aesthetic as a whole.

This past week, I had a chance to speak with Dwight and Liz about the history of Crash Symbols, their days of being involved in music blogs, the skills they bring to running a label, and much more. It’s worth noting that I was a contributor to Decoder Magazine for a while and helped them produce a podcast, so I have worked with Dwight and Liz in the past, which made our interview for this show a bit more loose and informal than usual. But, you’ll get to hear that interview in a few different segments throughout the show, along with track selections from several releases from the Crash Symbols catalog. Hope you enjoy this episode!
