Library problems can be more dramatic than my problems...

Why did it rain in the library?
It is a blessing and a privilege to work in such a beautiful and historic building such as the Carpenter Memorial Library. Sometimes this blessing also comes with headaches and heartaches. Early Tuesday morning library staff discovered a slow but steady seepage of water from the library's ceiling due to a broken pipe. This leak sent water raining over and into the mezzanine and then down into the nonfiction stacks below it. Quick action from the city's Facilities division stopped the leak, but not before the water threatened those special collections on the library's mezzanine as well as the nonfiction collections behind the Circulation Desk.

As we all know, water and books do not mix. Library staff gathered together in the rotunda, created a plan of action and worked together to move the collections of materials from the mezzanine and the nonfiction books to safer areas in the library. It was a very large, heavy and intense job.

Now remediation is underway. While we will remain open, parts of the library and library collections will be temporarily unavailable. Repair and construction will be ongoing. We thank you for your concern, patience and understanding as we work through this trying, but temporary challenge.

“We did it in 18 months – which felt like Rocky Balboa in 18 rounds, and I just want to say ‘We did it, baby!’, Trinity President Nathan Stanton said. “This historic occasion marks not just the unveiling of a building but the beginning of a new chapter in our community’s Catholic education. As we open these doors we celebrate the 100th anniversary of St. Joseph school, which all began at Pine Street, down the road.”

Trinity High School chaplain Rev. Rory Traynor set a tone of unity during his opening prayer, offered during last week’s ceremony officially launching – and blessing – the expanded campus of the Catholic high school.

As the month of August comes to a close, the City of Manchester Planning and Community Development Department’s zoning ordinance rewrite listening tour is nearing its end, with last Wednesday’s event in Ward 2 at Smyth Road Elementary School marking the 10th out of 12 planned neighborhood meeting

The ribbon cutting was preceded by a speech from Manchester Mayor Jay Ruais, who told those assembled along Kelley Street that he has now been sober for 14 years and understands what it is like to be in recovery from alcohol abuse.

Kelley Street was the site of a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday afternoon as members of New Hampshire’s substance abuse recovery community gathered to re-christen a new licensed residential drug and alcohol treatment program facility.
