Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that the Ghana Space Agency will be operationalised in 2023 as part of efforts to harness the power of earth observations to support planning and decision-making in weather forecasting as well as monitoring and response to natural disasters.
He disclosed that Cabinet had approved the Ghana Space Policy and Implementation Plan that will enable the full operationalisation of the national Space Agency.

Speaking at the Opening session of the Group on Earth Observations (GEO) week on Wednesday morning in Accra, Dr Bawumia said the country was working through bilateral and multilateral partnerships to "boost resource efficiency, establish a circular economy, mitigate, and adapt to climate change, mitigate disaster risks and halt biodiversity loss".

"We are also actively pursuing improved ways to harness the power of earth observations to support planning and decision-making in weather forecasting, measuring land-use change (such as deforestation), monitoring coastlines, and monitoring and responding to disasters, including fires, floods, and earthquakes," Dr Bawumia said.

"On this note, we are happy to inform you that Cabinet has approved the Ghana Space Policy and Implementation Plan that will enable the full operationalization of the Ghana Space Agency next year. We extend an invitation to you all to partner with us as we embark on this exciting journey".

The 500ml bottled water will also be retailed at ¢2.50 while the medium-sized bottled water will go for ¢3.50 and the 1.5 litres bottled water will sell at ¢5.

This was contained in a statement on Thursday, October 27, by the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers.

The new prices, the Association says are due to the continuous increases in the cost of production inputs as a result of the depreciation of the cedi against the major trading currencies.

GHANA’S ECONOMIC SITUATION TODAY
In the last few years, our economy has lurched from crisis to crisis,
ultimately resulting in the most debilitating living conditions in several
decades.
Within a space of ten months, our currency, the Ghana Cedi, has
depreciated by over 62% against the US dollar which is the highest in
recent memory.

Our public debt is projected to hover around GH¢ 522 billion by close of
this year, with a corresponding debt to GDP ratio of above 100%.
The debt service obligation arising from this, is monstrous and, is making
it impossible to finance almost all critical sectors of the economy.
The wage bill has gone up due to unbridled recruitment into all sectors of
the public service resulting from a poor capacity of the private sector to
mop-up the teeming youth graduating from all levels of our educational
system.
Worse still, Ghana has been classified as the country with the highest
likelihood of debt default, which reflects the multiple downgrades by the
international credit agencies.
As it stands, we remain firmly shut out of the international bond market.
Inflation is almost 40% and is set to rise higher.
Amidst contestations about the credibility of the method applied, some
finance and economic experts believe that the reported inflation
numbers, as with other economic indices, are worse than the published
narratives.
Ghana is on record as having the highest food inflation in the world at
122% notwithstanding the much touted but grossly mismanaged Planting
for Food and Jobs programme.

We are grappling with treasury bill rates of about 30% as local investors
in our financial instruments suffer huge risks associated with lending to government.
We are also experiencing massive reverse capital flows as investors lose what is left of their confidence in our economy and pull out in droves.
Intelligence has spoken ❤️

10/28/2022

Former President John Dramani Mahama has professed a number of solutions to the government which he says when implemented would help the country out of its current economic woes.
The solutions include the government cutting down on expenditure by reducing the number of appointees, abolishing or realigning state institutions with similar functions and the suspension of non essential projects.

Again, the former President has called on the government to do more to curb corruption.

Speaking at an event dubbed “Building the Nation We want”, on Thursday night, former President Mahama said the government had created many institutions to perform functions which established state institutions could efficiently carry out, a situation that was a drain on the country’s resources.

For instance, he said, there was no need for the government to establish a Free SHS Secretariat when the Ghana Education Service could effectively implement the Free SHS policy or for the establishment of developmental authorities when MMDCEs has the capacity to perform their functions.

The Former President further called on the government to cushion the public against high fuel prices with the windfall from the increased revenues it had made from high oil prices.

Let us rise! Let us hold each other’s hands; Let us put our shoulders and
minds to the wheel; Let us protect and defend our democracy; And let us
build the Ghana we want!
As I conclude let me state that I agree with the President and wish to add
my voice to his call on our Armed Forces and security services to remain
loyal to the State and the Constitution.
The current economic circumstances though dire, do not give excuse for
any acts that are unconstitutional.
Working together as one people and using the levers of the constitution,
we can turn this situation around.
God bless our homeland Ghana!
I thank you for your kind attention.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has stated that the safety of journalists to go about their duties is sacrosanct.
Condemning attacks on media personnel when the leadership of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) called on him on Wednesday evening, President Akufo-Addo said: “I don't condone any attacks on any journalist even those who abuse me.”
He said he preferred a noisy and mischievous press to a sycophantic one.

He explained that journalists have to feel safe to go about their work because of what they do for the country and the community as their work was extremely important.

He said he preferred the current kind of press in Ghana which is very active and vibrant especially, the diversity and proliferation which had made the presence of the media felt in every corner of the country.

President Akufo-Addo reiterated that there could be no press freedom if systematically journalists were always afraid for their lives

The President of the GJA, Albert Dwumfour said this year’s GJA awards night scheduled for November 12, was on the theme “Walking the Path Towards Ghana’s Economic Recovery - The Role of the Media”.

He said the topic sought to highlight the essential role of the media in the present challenging socio-economic circumstances and how best the media could help in the economic recovery efforts.

He called on the President to revive his annual media Encounter’ series to enable him share thoughts on pertinent national issues with the media and to also enable the media express their concerns about the operations of the government.

He expressed worry about the welfare of journalists and said the association was engaging media owners as to how best to address the situation and urged government to also do its part in saving the Ghana Broadcasting from collapse

When the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah explained that the country’s downgrading was because the ratings was more about welfare of journalist.

The Minister of Finance, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta has expressed appreciation to President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for leading Tuesday's stakeholder engagements on the economy.
In a series of tweets by the Finance Minister's office, it was explained that the stakeholder engagements will continue on Wednesday with market women.
The Finance Minister has come under pressure this week with some members from the majority caucus asking President Akufo-Addo to remove him, together with Charles Adu Boahen, a Minister of State at the Finance sector from office.

The MPs believe that the removal of the two will help restore some confidence in the sector..
Already, the leader of government business in Parliament, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has disclosed that President Akufo-Addo has told members of the majority caucus clamouring for the removal of the Finance Minister to consider the timing of their call..

The timing here is in reference to the discussions with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta was leading and they are getting closer to a deal.

Again, President Akufo-Addo also wants the members to consider the timing for the preparation of the 2023 budget, the impact of Mr Ofori-Atta’s removal on the economy, the impact on the budget and the crafting of the 2023 budget.

President Akufo-Addo, according to Mr Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who is also the Minister of Parliamentary affairs made the “passionate plea” when he met with the caucus on Tuesday night after some members of the group had held a press conference to demand the sacking of Mr Ofori-Atta as Finance Minister, and Charles Adu Boahen, as a Minister of State at the Finance Ministry.

Father beats his two-months-old son for disturbing his sleep

A 28-year-old father has been arrested by the Nigerian Police Force for allegedly assaulting his 2-month-old baby named Miracle

The incident led to the amputation of the fractured arm at the Pediatrics ward of the Federal Medical Centre, FMC Owerri.

NAWOJ, NHRC and the aggrieved mother of baby Miracle, made the call for justice in Owerri the Imo State Capital.

Imo State Chairperson of NAWOJ, Dr Dorothy Nnaji who spoke to newsmen after visiting the amputated boy at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, confirmed that the injury inflicted by the 31-year-old father, a native of Amurie in Isu LGA of the state, led to the amputation of the little boy’s right hand.

Mrs Nnaji who frowned at the dastardly cruel act of Mr Amatobi expressed shock that a father could assault his innocent child simply because he was crying and disturbing his sleep.

She disclosed that Mr Amatobi was reported to have repeatedly hit the baby with a plastic hanger to stop him from crying until the right hand broke.

10/25/2022

The Minority in Parliament is to move a motion on the floor of Parliament today for impeachment of the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta.
The motion will be moved by the Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu, during today’s proceedings.

The Minority, therefore, has urged their counterparts in the Majority Caucus to throw their weight behind the motion to garner 183 MPs needed to push for the Finance Minister’s removal.

Reasons for impeachment
Addressing a press conference in Parliament, the First Deputy Minority Whip, Ibrahim Ahmed, said when the Business Committee met last Monday, the Minority Leader indicated to the Majority Leader and the Chairman of the Business Committee that he was going to proceed with a motion to impeach of the Finance Minister.

He said the move was based on the poor economic mismanagement, inconsistencies, non-performance and the lack of performing statutory obligations.

He, therefore, expressed shock at the move by the Majority Caucus to hold a press conference to call on the President to dismiss Mr Ofori-Atta.

“The Minority Leader told the chairman of the Business Committee, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, that as the representatives of the people, we must move a motion to call for the head of the Finance Minister.
“So, if our brothers in the Majority believe in this, what they should do is to support the motion by the Minority Leader for the dismissal of the Finance Minister,” he said.
Why President’s not sacking minister?
Mr Ahmed described the press briefing by the Majority as long overdue since they failed in the past to act.
“If they meant well, the day they went to Cabinet meeting and President Akufo-Addo pointed to them that ‘you want me to sack my finance minister when he was sponsoring my campaign where were you’ they should have acted”

10/22/2022

The pollution of water bodies in the Eastern Region due to the activities of illegal miners has adversely affected water quality in the area.

The situation has compelled the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) to use more chemicals for the treatment of water to make it wholesome for human consumption.
One of the heavily polluted water bodies is the Birim River.

The region depends on water mainly from the Densu River, the Volta River and now heavily polluted Birim River.

The Eastern Regional Chief Manager of the GWCL, Asomani Kweku Nyarko, in an interview with the Daily Graphic at his Koforidua office last Tuesday said since the company had to use more chemicals such as chlorine and alum, among
others, which was making them incur huge losses.

He said before the illegal mining (galamsey) menace, the company was using 19 milligrammes of chemicals per litre of water but currently it was using 103 milligrammes of chemicals per litre of water.

PURC tariffs
In view of the situation, Mr Nyarko indicated that the company had not been able to charge the Public Utility Regulatory Commission agreed tariffs due to shutdowns of its treatment plants as a result of pollution of the water by ‘galamsayers’.

Apart from that, he stated that the frequent destruction of the pipelines by construction firms made it impossible for the company to regularly supply water to consumers.
Consumers, he indicated, were therefore, unwilling to pay bills because they were not getting the water as required and that had affected the company's finances.

That, he said, was because the company could only produce 50 cubic metres of water instead of the required 95 cubic metres of water for consumers out of the required 100 cubic metres.
He stated that the company's inability to produce more for human consumption was bringing dissatisfaction to consumers because GWCL could simply not meet their demand.

Nestle Ghana giving its employees free GH¢7,500 due to harsh economy

Nestle Ghana has announced mouthwatering money support for its employees to cushion them against the harsh economic situation

According to the company, it has decided to give each of its permanent staff a whopping GH7,500 plus their October salaries.

In a communique signed by the country’s Managing Director, Nestle Ghana said it decided because of “the unstable and unpredictable economic turbulence” in Ghana.

In the wake of price hikes which have been necessitated by the fast depreciating Ghana Cedi, Nestle Ghana said to its employees: “despite these difficulties and as a strong sign of appreciation for the efforts of every one of us.”

Cedi depreciates further as $1 is now equivalent to GH¢14
The value of the Ghana Cedi has suffered another massive depreciation against the dollar.

The recent depreciation moves a dollar close to GH¢14.

According to Joy Business, the Cedi is losing value more quickly than the euro and pound. It is now being sold for around 14.05 pounds and 12.10 euros.

Leading forex agencies in Ghana’s capital, Accra, report a severe lack of US dollars.

Once more, a handful of banks lack the funds necessary for currency exchanges and other relevant transactions.

Nigerian banks with operations in Ghana claimed that the free collapse of the cedi against the dollar has led to dollar hoarding, which has increased demand for the US “greenback.”

Yesterday, October 19, 2022, most forex offices sold the local currency for between 12.50 and 12.95 to the dollar.

Some traders have already protested the free collapse of the cedi because they believe that their costs of conducting business have been rising week after week.
