Here are 5 tips you can use. Make sure to post one of your photos in the comments, I'd love to see them.

1. Use a Tripod: Stability is key in low-light photography to prevent blurring. Using a tripod also allows you to set longer exposure times to capture the best of the light displays. This even applies to your cell phone. If you don't have a tripod find something sturdy you can use instead like a large rock.

2. Long Exposure Settings: Set your camera to a long exposure to capture the lights effectively. A typical setting might be anywhere from 5 to 30 seconds, depending on the intensity and movement of the aurora. Experiment with different exposure times to see what captures the best detail and color.

3. Manual Focus: Autofocus can be unreliable in dark settings, so manual focus is your friend. Set your lens to infinity or use the live view mode to focus on a distant light to ensure sharp images.

4. High ISO, but Not Too High: Increasing the ISO setting can help capture more light and detail, but going too high can introduce unwanted noise. Start around 800 to 1600 and adjust based on the brightness of the aurora and your camera’s capabilities.

5. Composition and Foreground Interest: While the lights themselves are stunning, a well-composed photograph often includes an interesting foreground to add depth and context. Look for opportunities to include land features, water reflections, or silhouettes of trees or buildings.
