A summary of updates from today regarding the UPS airplane crash at Muhammad Ali International Airport in Louisville, Kentucky that occurred on November 4, 2025:
Death toll stands at 12. Including one child.
Federal officials from the NTSB have taken over the crash investigation. They confirmed the left engine detached from the airplane during takeoff. The MD-11 plane gained enough lift to clear an airport boundary fence before striking terrain and structures just outside airport property. The black box for the plane has been recovered and was being transported to the NTSB laboratory in Washington D.C.
City and state officials have been monitoring water and air quality around the crash site and the city since last night. Unless specifically contacted by the Louisville Water Company everyone should expect water to be safe to consume. No issues with air quality have been observed. Quality testing of air and water for JCPS schools was also conducted today, finding no issues. Monitoring will continue in the days ahead.
Gov. Andy Beshear declared a state of emergency to make it easier to procure the resources needed to respond to the disaster. Additionally, he has opened an emergency relief fund to support those affected by the plane crash. Money donated to the Team Kentucky Emergency Relief Fund (https://secure.kentucky.gov/formservices/Finance/emergencyrelief) will help with response, recovery and rebuilding Beshear said.
Early this morning the shelter in place order was reduced to a quarter mile radius around the plane crash site. Some of the affected area was still inaccessible to emergency responders as of this afternoon, with the expectation that more victims would be found once searched.
