since the festival is called “When We Were Young”, i wanted to ask everyone that sat down with me who were some of their musical influences from when they were young and first getting their start in music.
my first concert was New Found Glory in 2003 in new orleans for the honda civic tour. i printed out directions from map quest and drove my first car two hours to the show. i had a fake ID that said i was 21 (i was 16 and i looked 12) but they gave me a drink wrist band somehow and i ordered the only drink i knew existed — a screwdriver 🍊
i can even remember the first NFG song i discovered. “hit or miss” was playing on MTV 2 late one night , and i ran and got a VHS tape and recorded what i could of it
this past weekend i got to sit down MY musical influences and ask them who were some of THEIR musical influences

i remember listening to the demos to this album on a burned CD on the way to my first summer job, and i remember just being so floored and amped up by the tracks — even at 6 in the morning
i’ve always reflected the sentiments that The Used’s debut self-titled album, from the art aesthetic to sound design , to the vocal delivery and instrumentation, all played a huge role in bridging the gap between a lot of the emo tinged post hardcore and more of a mainstream sound— truly the “best of both worlds”— which other bands often imitated, but never duplicated. that album could very well be one of the most important albums in the scene.
and i just had to ask Bert McCracken of The Used what artists were inspiring him around the time this album was being written
