I get sucked into an other worldly plane, a pink phone to my ear and limitless possibilities outstretched in front of me. This is the fertile power of improv. I digress. Sure, I talk about the Mike&Chloe Show and I hope it’s compelling, but the real meat of it is when I tell her what I want her to do… How I want her to imagine everything that ever was and that could be. And that’s The Mike&Chloe Show. 😊 To fill you in on the back story… This is the second video in our fake telethon series. We created the series to generate buzz about the launch of our improvised web series. I mean who doesn’t love a telethon?! In this video, I think you get a window into what I love about improv. There’s no one on the other line. Nothing is scripted. I’m just riffing on a couple of characters that Mike mentioned in his opening host speech, imagining what they’d say during a telethon. I can’t tell you how liberating it is to just go from moment to moment following what feels right. You tap into something. You surprise yourself. Characters reveal themselves to you and you are no longer just you – you’re everyone who ever was or could be, if only you just listen. There’s nothing like it. The Mike&Chloe Show is now LIVE 🥳🎟️ Remember telethons? I do, with a hint of nostalgia for a time that was already in the past when I was a kid… We came up with this piece when we were thinking through how to get people to subscribe to our show. We kind of got stuck, fixated you might say, on the word “subscribe.” It’s kind of a hypnotic word. Say it with me: subscribe subscribe subscribe. It’s wild, isn’t it? Well we were having fun saying the word over and over like that and getting silly when it came to us: what if we host a fake telethon? So we wrote up a script for Mike to be the host – talking about who was calling in and why it felt so good to subscribe. The idea was that I’d be in the background on the phone, just like you used to see on a real telethon. Then Mike wanted to shoot some unplanned b-roll of me answering the phone. And that’s when the descent into madness started. Mike kept the camera rolling for like a half hour while I improvised. I pulled from the characters Mike outlined in his host speech, imagining what they might be like if they called in. As the camera kept rolling, I just dove in. I was really at the telethon, and it was easy to talk to “callers” about the show because I know why it’s special… The show is about finding understanding and common ground in the face of different beliefs and values. It’s about really seeing another person. Exploring what it means to exist. We play all kinds of characters but at the end of the day, what we’re really doing is being authentic. You deserve a bit of whimsy in your day. 🐶 I can’t claim credit for this because Pierre wrote this one…okay not really but it does feel that way. When Pierre first came into my life, I was inspired by how he interacted with the world. What little things he might be talking about. What he loves to sniff and why. His questions about how things worked. Standard word and phrases didn’t seem to cut it, so I started inventing language from Pierre’s perspective. Dried worms that Pierre tried to eat off the hot sidewalk were not merely dried worms, no, they were “ground candy.” Even what Pierre called me was unique. I was not just Mama or Mommy – somehow, I became “Moomy” (which you’ll hear in this poem). One of Pierre’s nicknames is Monkey, which became Moonkey, and so it made sense that I would be Moomy. I digress. This piece, if I might introduce it for Pierre (because for all his talent, he has not mastered the keyboard) is about what it feels like to dream. Not just any dream. A doggie dream. Don’t you ever wonder what your dog is dreaming about as they make little murmurs and move their paws in their sleep? In this piece, Pierre breaks it down for us. What it’s like to journey through a forest of smells and into the waking world. I hope it brings a little something to your day. Of course, I’ll be sure to tell Pierre about how his piece reviews. 👄🍷🎬 The idea for this ad came to me at my favorite French restaurant in Durham, NC. I was inspired by the idea of a beautiful meal as a metaphor for our show. To me, the comparison seemed slightly absurd but also kind of made sense. Which is exactly the kind of idea that really excites me as an artist. The crazy that somehow makes sense. The best parts of dining at a French restaurant - the rich meals, the decadent interior design, and of course the lavender Créme Brulée - all parallel in my mind the best parts of our show - the raw emotional depth, the span of creative themes, and the fresh perspectives on offer from each character, myself humbly(?) included. I hope y’all enjoy listening to this piece as much as I enjoyed creating it! And I hope you can hear the lushness of your favorite French restaurant dripping off the screen as much as I can.
