If your bathroom is compact, a built-in tub combined with a shower lets you use the square footage most economically. But stingier floor plans needn’t limit you to a standard 60-inch-by-28-inch rectangle. In his own California bungalow, Tom Perkins, principal at ParcLA architects in Los Angeles, combined a shower and slightly oversize tub that measures 5 feet by 3 feet, then tiled every possible surface but the ceiling in one-inch, blue-green mosaic tile (above), making it look more expansive.

Perkins points out one way built-ins save money. Most freestanding baths require freestanding fixtures, known as tub fillers. With a built-in, he said, “since all the plumbing is in the wall and not exposed, it’s just standard supplies.”

“The patio’s curves and plantings find their echo in the interior, confirming the link between indoors and out. Live-edge wood slabs, milled by Angel City Lumber () from 26 fallen trees culled from 14 neighborhoods around Los Angeles, form two spines that snake through the space, playing peekaboo with its various areas—the entry, the cocktail bar, the sushi bar, the main dining room—delicately carving intimate moments out of the sprawling 160 seat space. Their path is mirrored in the design of the hand-troweled acoustic plaster ceiling; the sinuous curves of its wooden fringe, which conceals cove lighting designed by Dot Dash () , conjures up Japan’s raked sand Karesansui gardens. Its curvaceousness is reiterated in the comfortable upholstered walnut banquettes, designed by ORA with details inspired by Japanese joinery.”

Join Aileen Fuchs, president and executive director, and the Vincent Scully Prize Jury, for an award presentation and cocktail reception at the National Building Museum on Oct 4 to celebrate the work of Walter Hood, pre-eminent American landscape designer, artist, and educator.

Best known for his work in the public realm and urban environments, Walter Hood has a storied career as a designer, artist, academic administrator, and educator. He creates ecologically sustainable spaces that connect with urban communities and help empower marginalized communities. Hood is the creative director and founder of Hood Design Studio, a social art and design practice based in Oakland, California which he founded in 1992. The studio’s practice includes art and fabrication, design and landscape, and research urbanism. Responding to each place’s unique scale and context with an approach adaptive to the specifics of a space, Hood’s work seeks to uncover and strengthen layers of meaning present in all landscapes – ecological, cultural, contemporary and historic. Notable projects include the large-scale garden designs of the International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston, South Carolina, the Oakland Museum of California, the M. H. de Young Museum in San Francisco, and the recently opened Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing Park in Jacksonville, Florida.

“In the fair’s main section, the Antwerp-based design store and gallery St Vincents () presents its first U.S. presentation. The international booth, curated by San Francisco-based designer Michael Hilal (), features pieces from the gallery’s international collaborators, including Cologne-based Studio Kuhlmann and Mexico City-based EWE studios. Hilal additionally features American designers, including Brian Thoreen, as well as items from his own Big Sur furniture collection—the latter features a modular sofa, integrated side tables, stools, and totems that reflect the sloping silhouette and undulating hills of California’s landscape.”

At the same time, he and Ms. Grawunder spent weekends hacking back the overgrown foliage around the house, and were surprised by what was revealed. “We found all these beautiful terraces along the river, with handmade concrete work and embedded abalone shells and tiles,” Mr. Jensen said. “It was like excavating in Pompeii.”
