Listen……a lot of heartbreaks might be avoided if folks were honest with themselves about any residual, unresolved emotions/attachments to an ex.

Sometimes we use new intimate partners as salve to sooth the wounds of old partners.

Sometimes we overlap relationships because we aren’t brave enough to release the old partner completely in order to discover what the new interest has in store.

Either way……a lot of heartbreaks could be avoided if we just handled people’s hearts with care & tenderness & empathy.

The Golden Rule is not that fu***ng hard.

This is such a powerful quote because it so accurately describes how partners change and evolve into new versions of themselves over time.

In a perfect world, every new version of our partner (and ourselves) is going to be better than the previous one.

But the reality is that we don’t always grow together and the new version may not be as palatable as the previous one.

If and when this happens, we have to allow ourselves time/space to mourn the previous version and then make a conscious choice about fully embracing (not just tolerating) who are partner is in THIS moment (not who they were 2 versions ago).

Maybe the new version is temporary, maybe it isn’t. Either way, it’s ok to miss the old version……as long as we understand that the old version has expired.

This week has been a turbulent storm. I wish I could say that, like all storms, it will pass. In an effort to pull myself out of my empath slump, I kept repeating “this is only temporary” but the truth is…..it’s not temporary. This is us. This is America. This chaos and division may appear new but it’s always been here. It may have been dormant but it was always here, bubbling beneath the surface.

• It was here when colonizers enslaved, stole from and dehumanized Indigenous people

• It was here during chattel slavery in the DisUnited States

• It was here during the Tulsa Massacre in the Greenwood District, the Rosewood Massacre, the Red Summer, and many other moments of Black Excellence.

• It was here during the Japanese Internment

• It was here during the Chicano Movement

It was here, just last year, when many peaceful protesters, at best, were tear-gassed and at worst had the s**t beaten out of them or lost their lives during the protests against the deaths of Breonna Taylor, George Floyd and many others.

The roots of these events are antiquated attitudes, beliefs, ideologies that have EXPIRED. They have NEVER served the greater good of humanity. They have NEVER unified. They have NEVER yielded love, acceptance, goodwill and decency.

So yes, we are the sky and although this turbulent weather has lasted way too long, it’s up to us to create our own sunshine….individually and collectively. We can’t undo Wednesday. We can’t undo any of the past injustices. All we can do is protect our energy and move forward, practicing respect, truth, and above all, critical thinking.
