At Manzanita Berry and Bark, we believe in the power of local relationships.

Welcome to Manzanita Berry and Bark, where we are dedicated to nurturing community engagement and fostering a deeper understanding of regenerative food systems. Our mission is anchored in four key pillars: Community Engagement, Regenerative Agriculture, Food Systems, and Food Policy and Advocacy, alongside a passion for Foraging and Wild Foods. We work closely with growers in our area to share the

ir unique stories and experiences, creating content that reflects the diverse voices in our community. By actively listening to community needs and concerns, we aim to build a supportive network that promotes local food culture. Regenerative Agriculture
Our commitment to regenerative practices drives us to explore how sustainably grown produce can positively impact our environment and health. We conduct research, interview regenerative growers, and develop educational content to empower our readers with knowledge about these practices. Our goal is to inspire the adoption of regenerative methods within home gardens and food forests. Food Systems
We examine the intricate web of the food supply chain across the U.S., with a particular focus on the West Coast. By exploring issues of food accessibility and equity, we create informative articles designed to engage our readership with the latest developments in local food systems, promoting awareness and understanding of how food reaches our tables. Food Policy and Advocacy
Understanding the impact of food policy on communities is crucial to our mission. We seek to cultivate a community of informed food advocates, facilitating discussions that can lead to meaningful policy changes. Through our platforms, we strive to highlight and address the policies influencing our food landscape, fostering a robust network of advocates for food justice. Foraging and Wild Foods
Our fascination with foraging and wild edibles highlights the importance of native plants in sustainable food systems. We conduct extensive research on wild foods, crafting guides, and recipes that celebrate the art of foraging. By sharing our discoveries, we aim to reconnect individuals with nature and promote the body of knowledge surrounding wild culinary practices. Join us on our journey as we explore these vital topics, empowering our community to take part in shaping a more sustainable and equitable food future. Together, we can cultivate a thriving ecosystem that honors the land, its people, and the rich bounty it provides.

🎥✨ NEW VIDEO: Camping & Connecting in Death Valley – The Long Way Begins 🌵

We took the long way on purpose.
Because sometimes the fastest route skips over the most beautiful parts.

In this first episode of The Long Way, we journey through Death Valley National Park—the ancestral homeland of the Timbisha Shoshone. What some call barren, we found to be full of meaning, laughter, and quiet magic.

Charlotte helped set up camp and looked after her brother with a strength I’ll never forget. Luke invented the story of “Dumpster Boy,” a desert wanderer who turns scraps into kindness. And together, we rediscovered what it means to simply be.

🌌 Starry nights and stories shared under the desert sky

🌿 This isn’t just a travel video—it’s a story about presence, motherhood, memory, and healing in wild places.

🌄 We didn’t rush. We wandered. We rested. We remembered.

Our first stop on The Long Way was Death Valley National Park—often called barren, but to us, it was a beginning.

For five days, we traded screens for stargazing, noise for desert stillness, and routines for connection. Charlotte became my steadfast right hand. Luke created the story of “Dumpster Boy”—an orphan making his way through the desert, collecting forgotten treasures and looking for a place to belong.

We climbed dunes, traced rock layers, sledded through golden sand, and stood in awe at Zabriskie Point and Ubehebe Crater. In the silence, something deep within us began to heal.

✨ This isn’t just a road trip. It’s a return to presence.
To listening.
To family.
To the land.

It’s been some time since my last blog post, and I appreciate your patience. I’ve been traveling around the beautiful west side of the US, immersing myself in the wonders of our National Parks and connecting with fellow booksellers at a conference in Denver. As I prepare to return to California, I’m feeling a strong pull to move back to the mountains, where I can write, travel, and nurture the nonprofit, 🫶🏽✨📚. For now, I’m focusing on completing Utah’s big 5 with my two kids, creating cherished memories along the way. I truly hope everyone is staying warm during this season, and I’m eagerly looking forward to reconnecting online in the spring. 🌿

🌍✨ Exciting News! ✨🌱

A few years ago, my daughter Charlotte had the chance of a lifetime—spending a day learning about sustainable building techniques in the stunning Southern Sierra Nevada! She got hands-on experience with cob building alongside the incredible Sarah Brown, an off-grid enthusiast and expert in natural building.

From mixing clay, sand, and straw to sculpting small walls, Charlotte dived deep into the world of eco-friendly construction. The tactile joy of working with natural materials inspired her like never before! 🛠️💚

One of the highlights? Charlotte interviewed Sarah for a video project, capturing both their passion for sustainability and the beauty of building with nature. 🌿🎥

I’m beyond proud to see Charlotte's excitement for eco-friendly living grow! Check out their amazing day together in the video below and join us in exploring the impactful world of sustainable building!
