Working on a reel about my visit to Montezuma National. This site was almost lost bc of heavy foot traffic in the early to mid 1900’s. The conservation story here is a really good one to learn from. Hats off to the for the work they do to protect AND provide access.

Dear Johnny Neel,
Thank you for the friendship you showed me whenever we got the time. I considered it such an honor when you'd compliment me on my work as an actor because I revered you as an artist the moment I heard your connection to your music. Our night in the studio playing JAMPROV with J Randall Boen and Curt Redding was truly one of the BEST creative sessions of my career, and I keep those tracks with me at all times. Whitney and I have never forgot your generosity in playing our rehearsal dinner. That marina didn't know what hit 'em, and the boats came in from all over just to catch the sound!
Sending so much love to all who knew you.

And love to you, Johnny. Play on, my friend. You will always be "my kind of people."

Art in our society is always undervalued. The first to disappear from school programming, regardless of the copious studies showing its developmental value, not to mention its place in influencing cultural change and history. Where most countries see this value and effectively subsidize their Arts programming, we do not.

Entertainment, on the other hand, is typically rewarded in our society with money being thrown even from threadbare pockets just for a chance to escape into that “other world,” be it a sport, a game, a show, a movie, podcast, radio, VR, etc.

It is always fascinating to me when the same arguments against the pursuit of Art are wielded at the very profitable show BUSINESS of Entertainment, a multi-billion dollar industry that employs tens of thousands conservatively, not to mention secondary markets of hundreds of thousands of workers. In moments like this, I wonder if the venom directed at Entertainment comes from still not wanting the Art student to “make it” or show that there was value in pursuing their Art. “That degree was supposed to be worthless, by the way - oh, could you make my company a cool new logo for free while I laugh and share your online content that I'd scoff at paying for."

This strike is the Art side of the Entertainment Industry fighting for its living and the livelihoods of those who bring that Art to life. In opposition, these are those who bought into the undervaluing of Art way back in school, settling an old score with Art itself. At the same time, making money hand over fist from the audience's eager consumption of everything they undervalue.

Solidarity to ALL those who bring Art to life, even for pure entertainment. It has value. From pure escapism to artful cultural changes, it has an audience. The profits don't lie, just the profiteers.

Thank you Portland Press Herald for our review of THE CAKE at Portland Stage! Congrats All!

"A thoroughly engrossing, entertaining and gently inspiring slice of theater from Portland Stage."

"Raymond McAnally plays likeable good-old-boy husband Tim in some of the funniest scenes in the show, while also adding a touch of poignance in his romancing of Della."

'The Cake' tells the story of a young Southern-born woman whose marriage to another woman gives her mother's best friend pause about baking for the wedding.

I am honored to teach the next Writing Workshop (Virtually) for the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site. Here's the info with a link to sign up -

"On Monday, March 20, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. ET, Raymond McAnally will lead a virtual writing workshop titled "Using Acting Techniques to Write Clear Characters."

Have you ever had trouble differentiating one character's voice or reactions from another on the page? Do characters with strong or surprising points of view seem to evade you? Then spend a workshop with writer/actor Raymond McAnally to learn how he uses his experience as an actor to write new characters and find the decisions and actions that draw us to them.

This workshop is open to writers of all skill levels and is a fun way to find inspiration from a new prompt or revise current work. It is hosted by the Friends of Carl Sandburg at Connemara and will use Microsoft Teams for the virtual connection. A link will be emailed to participants the day before the workshop."
